We are starting this weekend off with a private catered dinner and time to mingle. Enjoy a delicious meal, while getting to know fellow artists, and hear John talk about his journey as a commercial photographer. Throughout the weekend, John will also meet individually with every participant for a one-on-one portfolio review. These will begin the first night!

After a while, they can all start to look and sound the same. By providing practical information relevant to everyday living, we hope to rise above the rest and be a regular source that you can trust.

However, there is no substitute for experience in any outdoor situation, and your reaction in a survival situation depends on your education and training. Always keep in mind that a wilderness survival situation can happen to you. Be prepared and plan to survive.

You never know what’s inside a stream or river. It all sorts of stuff that you probably don’t want in your system. Grab a sock and fill them with charcoal. Follow it up with a layer of sand and then finally a layer of grass. The grass will catch the large particles in the water while the sand will filter out the fine granules. The charcoal will purify the water of any harmful chemicals.

Get a small fire going, then grab a bandage, smear it in Vaseline, and chuck it into the fire along with mosquito repellent, which yes, is flammable. This gets a big fire going fast. Next, quickly pile leaves on to cue the smoke which will get you noticed.

Request a security blanket. According to
Mark Burhenne, DDS, wearing a weighted blanket like the ones used during X-rays can make you
feel safer in the chair. It pairs nicely with a therapy dog—a cuddly service that more and more practices are offering.

The world is watching the conflict in the Kashmir region of the India/Pakistan border with bated breath.  Not receiving much attention in the mainstream media, is the war breaking out right now on the other side of the globe.

Right size: If you are planning to walk a lot, remember that your feet are going to get a bit swollen. In that case, your shoes need to fit correctly. Anticipate the situation and choose your shoe size accordingly.

If you’re suffering from hypothermia, bubble wrap can save your life. Who would have guessed? Apparently, the air bubbles in the packing material create an insulating shield that bounces back body heat to keep a person warm. In one study, it was found that a sheet of bubble wrap was about seventy percent as effective as three cotton blankets for insulating a person—and since it’s made out of plastic, it was even more effective in the wind and rain.

Your list is pretty good and pretty comprehensive. However, it seems a bit all over the the map. Maybe some further breakdown of home/car/BOB would be in order. Right now, my home and car kits are good, but I’m browsing the web for ideas on more or better gear for my BOB. And as I’m browsing through your list I see…

3. Hydration bag: MSR Dromedary Bag 10-L ($44.95) — Though the MSR Dromedary hydration bag comes in several sizes, going with the 10-L allows you to the flexibility to vary your volume, depending on your current need. What sets this bag apart from others is its tough outer shell, which protects against abrasions and leakage.

A synthetic bag can keep a person warm in cold temperatures as well, but there’s a drawback — they weigh more, sometimes a few pounds more. If you don’t mind a couple extra pounds, then go with a synthetic bag like this Goretex modular system.

Launch a project (or a rocket): Like the jilted New Zealand woman who launched her wedding ring into space on a homemade rocket or the blogger who got a book deal from devising “101 uses for my ex-wife’s wedding dress,” you, too, can channel hard feelings into hard work.

Thank you for this, it’s great. We’re going to be putting together a first aid/medical kit list sometime in the future, and I’ll definitely take that first list into account when we get around to posting that. It’ll be really helpful.

If you’re in a cold climate and are doing your best to prepare for power outages that may happen in the winter, take a read through our guide to staying warm indoors during a power outage when it’s freezing cold outside.

In addition, the kits may contain typical individual survival kit items, such as nylon tarps, extra clothes and coats, blankets, sleeping bags, matches or other fire starting equipment, a compass and maps, flashlights, toilet paper, soap, a pocket knife and bowie knife, a fishing kit, a portable camping stove, a power inverter, backpack, paper and pencil, a signaling mirror, whistle, cable saw, bleach, insect repellent, magnifying glass, rope and nylon cord, pulleys, and a pistol and ammunition.

And one last tip for shelter placement: Survey the ground around you for 20 yards or more in every direction — you are looking for ant colonies and bee hives and other insect nests. When you’re sure there are none close by, now you can place your shelter.

The good news is you have a lot of choices in survival lighters. You can go cheap with a standard BIC lighter, or you can go high-tech with a Tesla lighter. Or go with anything in-between like a zippo.

Reading the news headlines this morning I was affected by a report that indicates there is an undeniable nuclear arms race going on. And in my opinion that just begs Armageddon. It may increases the temptation to actually use these weapons. During his state of the nation address in Moscow, …

They need to figure out a better plan to get things out and to their customers. This is going to cost them their business if they don’t do something different than their current shipping. Or maybe it’s in their warehouse and the workers just don’t work but are packaging one shipment a day. Goodluck if you make a purchase from them, I hope you get your item in a reasonable amount of time.

A first aid kit is kind of a no-brainer, but you have to make sure you get yourself a good one. And this… this is a good one. In addition to all the usuals (bandages, scissors, etc.), this 100-piece kit also contains a compass, a poncho, a whistle, a CPR mask and a Mylar blanket. This isn’t just about first-aid. This is a full-on survival kit.

A Dry Top Super Heavy Duty Tarp on the other hand is a lot more tear resistant than any backpacking tent that I’ve seen. If you carry a couple of these of varying sizes you can assemble a survival shelter rather quickly. You’ll have to learn how to build a simple shelter first of course, which you can do using a nearby tree, rope, and a stick or two you find on the ground. A tarp shelter is easily camouflaged with brush — should you need to stay hidden for any period of time.

Different people have different opinions but, mine is mirrored in the words of a renowned evolutionary biologist- Richard Dawkins,  life has no higher purpose than to perpetuate the survival of  DNA…life has no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but  blind pitiless indifference.

If nobody knows where you went, when you went there or when you were meant to be back, your chances of getting help in a survival situation become a whole lot worse. Be clever, plan well and you’ll be absolutely fine.

Survival is your first priority, but don’t forget- you need to get rescued as well. Come up with an action plan in case a plane flies overhead or there are are search parties nearby. You’ve seen it in the movies – prepare a giant, easily visible fire pit out in the open or lay out stones in the pattern of HELP or S.O.S. You can also use any shiny, metallic object for reflection purposes.

The suggestions for the kit looks great, however I think you need to get your basics together first, fire making, shelter, first aid, food, and water, for at least 3 days, then weigh your kit. Now see how many pounds are left before you hit your maximum load which is going to vary for each person. Remember if your buggin out this isn’t a Saturday afternoon hike in the park where after three hours or so you thrown your pack in the car and go home. It’s going to be with you day in and day out.

As the probability of an individual surviving until age t or later is S(t), by definition, the expected number of survivors at age t out of an initial population of n newborns is n × S(t), assuming the same survival function for all individuals. Thus the expected proportion of survivors is S(t). If the survival of different individuals is independent, the number of survivors at age t has a binomial distribution with parameters n and S(t), and the variance of the proportion of survivors is S(t) × (1-S(t))/n.

A long while back, close to when we originally started penning this blog, I published an article about the most popular/best selling survival books in existence. While I know there will be plenty of overlap (what kind of a survival book list w…
