Emergency food bars, preferably products with 2,400 or 3,600 calories and contain no coconut or tropical oils to which many people may have an allergic reaction, in addition to non-perishable food which does not require cooking or refrigeration

Make sure you focus more on a bed than a shelter! It isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. The bed will protect you from the ground, which saps body heat and can cause hypothermia in a lot of cases. Plus, if you aren’t well rested, you won’t be at your best for other survival. It’s better to sleep under the stars in a bed, than to sleep in the total darkness and freeze to death. Ideally you have both, though. Piles of leaves are good bedding.

The knife really is sharp.. It is super convenient to be able to pull out a knife from your wallet whenever you need. We've used it while hiking, organizing the garage, opening packages, and a variety of other activities. The knife fits in your wallet as is the size of a credit card. It isn't bulky. My husband has owned his for two years and still finds it sharp and useful. I am sure we will give this gift again in the future. A geothermal system is a very efficient power source, steam is nearly free. The piping and Generators are typical of Hydro, Nuclear and other Electrical power plants. Yet, in this case the customers paid high rates. Because of the design of the Electrical infrastructure. No surge and No storage. They had to install expensive turbine (gas jet engine) powered generators. I have purchased several knives from survival life. The first knife I got, someone liked it better than I did and I was not a happy camper. I have given the knives to coworkers and each person likes them as much as I do! They are very sturdy, and well made. The smaller multi-tool is a great little get me out of trouble helper. The fire starters are going to be some stocking stuffers. The fire and fishing grenades are also neat. I will continue to purchase them when offered, even when the wife says that I have too many knives and toys. About Blog - Preparing For SHTF is a prepping, emergency preparedness and survival blog that touches on homesteading, bushcraft and other various skills needed to survive an impending disaster. Some of your suggestions seem to be more relevant to a bug out situation, whereas the jar of oil is not. Very useful tip for a bug in situation though! Personally, I have lamps and lamp oil in stock for home use, plus emergency candles in my BOB. The general rule of thumb for survival food is that unless you’re 100 percent certain that it’s edible, don’t eat it. Do your research before you go – for example, Bear notes that every jungle in the world has palm nuts, an excellent source of calories an carbohydrates containing 81 calories and 15 grams of carbs. That’s the kind of information that could save your life. On a side note, here’s a clip of Bear just chilling with, well, the president of the United States – Watch: Barack Obama Eat A Chewed-Up Fish Carcass Back in 2015, I reviewed the original Kershaw Shuffle. I don’t normally review newer models because usually the differences are so slight (Paramilitary 2 vs Paramilitary 3 for example), but in the case of the Shuffle II, it might as well be a… A signal mirror can serve two vital survival purposes. First, a mirror can signal help to a rescue plan or helicopter. Using the power of the sun to shine a glare towards a rescue team is an excellent way to gain attention. An elderly man is suing two federal government agencies for Constitutional rights violations. The rancher claims that both agencies trespassed on his property and installed cameras on his trees without his permission – but the icing on the cake was when they threatened to arrest him. In my last article on sizing your solar array, I said that if you have a solar array you should use batteries to store your power. This will enable you to run your home, tools and appliances when your solar panels are unable to provide enough power b… There are a lot of opinions on what works great for a flashlight. It might be wise to have two or three types of artificial light (like a headlamp, for a trail leader) split among your group, and a lantern, for giving a campsite light for a small group. Anyone serious about spending time outdoors should consider carrying at the least a headlamp, which can double as a lantern if hung from a tree branch. A headlamp offer hands-free use and shines a beam of light that can be positioned to point to the ground several feet in front of you, fully illuminating your path of travel. It can also be positioned to shine up and at an angle, if you are climbing a slope or even considering going up into a tree for any reason. Even in the darkest forest or cave, a headlamp will seem like there is light in every direction that you look. It is an essential item for every person's backpack and even an automobile (changing a tire on the side of the road at night is made easy with a headlamp, allowing you to see with ease). I don’t think it’s possible to carry all these items on one’s back! Maybe you could manage carrying them all in a vehicle, but even then it might be pushing it. Definitely the list is meant to be picked and chosen from, and a lot of the items are redundant; as you said “this or that” rather than “have one of each.” I just tried to make the list as all-inclusive as possible, just as a reminder that some things are available, even if they’re not particularly ideal/portable, or what most people would choose to have. In hostile territory, a good set of binoculars offers stealth and can help you identify an ambush up ahead as well as dangerous dogs, armed criminals, or other dangers before they find you or before you stumble into them. When it comes to multi-tools, Leatherman is the undisputed champ. And this survival tool, in particular, with nineteen different tools, will keep you in the game. It has everything from a saw to an electrical crimper on there, and to show you that they’re serious, Leatherman gives you a 25-year (!) guarantee. The survival function must be non-increasing: S(u) ≤ S(t) if u ≥ t. This property follows directly because T>u implies T>t. This reflects the notion that survival to a later age is only possible if all younger ages are attained. Given this property, the lifetime distribution function and event density (F and f below) are well-defined.

Right size: If you are planning to walk a lot, remember that your feet are going to get a bit swollen. In that case, your shoes need to fit correctly. Anticipate the situation and choose your shoe size accordingly.

Survival models can be usefully viewed as ordinary regression models in which the response variable is time. However, computing the likelihood function (needed for fitting parameters or making other kinds of inferences) is complicated by the censoring. The likelihood function for a survival model, in the presence of censored data, is formulated as follows. By definition the likelihood function is the conditional probability of the data given the parameters of the model. It is customary to assume that the data are independent given the parameters. Then the likelihood function is the product of the likelihood of each datum. It is convenient to partition the data into four categories: uncensored, left censored, right censored, and interval censored. These are denoted unc., l.c., r.c., and i.c. in the equation below.

A lot of people expect me carry a huge, Rambo-reminiscent survival knife, but in all truth, I’d rather be carrying a wood carving knife. Mora knives are my favorite wood carvers, since their laminated steel blades are strong, long wearing and razor sharp right out of the package. If you take the legendary Mora blade and add a quality spark rod handle insert from Light My Fire, you have the Swedish FireKnife.

Can’t believe I missed this comment! Just took a look at the stove and it looks great! Want to get my hands on one to test it out. Looks like it would do absolutely perfectly as a backup/emergency stove. Thanks so much for recommending it, Darlene!

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that being in a survival situation would be fun. Wilderness Survival is not a game, there is no reward challenges, and there is no immunity. How do you think you would fare in a survival situation? Could you build a shelter? Could you light a fire without matches? Could you forage for food and purify water? In real life you don’t have luxury items, you don’t get tarps and matches and camping supplies. In real life you may not have any tools except your own two hands. If you were stranded in the wilderness would you end up a survivor?

A record number of firearms enthusiasts made their way to the Florida State Fairgrounds this weekend to attend the Florida Gun Show, amid a fierce national debate over gun rights following the Valentine’s Day massacre at Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida.

Willie, thanks for that sweet link to The Daily Sheeple…. Working on getting that over to a new server.. seems there are probs from certain parts of the country and Europe… Also, I am working on getting some more regular editing over there.

Moving my home to the “country” was less about lower property taxes, empty nest syndrome, and proximity to wineries than about avoiding more populated areas and enabling greater security in the event of a major event. Adding a fence and planting lots of blackberry, raspberry, and rose bushes around the perimeter of my property was less about “curb appeal” than about slowing down potential intruders.

As the world quietly goes about their business, Pakistan has vowed to get revenge on India after an attack.  The tensions between the two nations are quickly spiraling out of control leading many to wonder if World War 3 will break out in the area soon.

At the same time, buying survival gear shouldn’t cost you a lot of money. Early Native Americans and other primitive cultures in the world survived without expensive sporting goods and outfitters, the REI’s and Cabelas.

If you’re putting together a solid first aid kit, you have to decide if that kit is going to have to perform in long-term survival settings. You can put together a decent kit or even consider one of our specially-designed kits, but what if a disast…
