I prefer the Eton FR 350 radio over the Ambient Weather Emergency Radio. The problem is that neither radio can really take the beating of a survival situation, and the price of the FR 350 has become ridiculous since they were discontinued. We have a money-making market available for anyone who can produce an emergency radio that uses alternative power sources and is built to withstand a real crisis.
Survival Power: Portable water filters do not remove chemicals and so none are a complete solution to water. Outside of a city following a collapse local water sources may be contaminated with any number of chemicals as industrial run-off leeches into ground water, making this water unsafe to drink, even with a water filter. In a wilderness setting though, a Lifestraw should do just fine for you, and be a real life saver.
Please, please please contact your State and Federal legislators, frequently. Don’t give up on this legislative fight, or our rights will get trampled. Tell your representatives that they MUST oppose any new gun laws. And remember: the phrase “universal background checks” is just statist code for a “ban on private party sales.” This sort of unconstitutional law would destroy the privacy of our gun purchases, paving the way for nationwide registration. Don’t fall for it!
Stephanie Frey/ShutterstockIt takes only one passing toddler to get “It’s a Small World (After All)” stuck in your head and a whole teeth-gnashing day to get it out. (But hey, listening to music is actually pretty healthy for you!) There is a better way to cure what scientists call involuntary musical imagery (aka, the common earworm). In fact, there are two ways:
Needless to say, he slapped on the seal body and set out on his way. The Vikings used to use seals for sleeping bags, clothes and ropes, so we suppose it’s not too outrageous – although they did do a fair bit of pillaging as well, and we’re not so on board with that.
Survival skills are techniques a person may use in a dangerous situation (e.g. natural disasters) to save themselves or others (see also bushcraft). Generally speaking, these techniques are meant to provide the basic necessities for human life: water, food, shelter, habitat, and the need to think straight, to signal for help, to navigate safely, to avoid unpleasant interactions with animals and plants, and for first aid. In addition, survival skills are often basic ideas and abilities that ancient humans had to use for thousands of years, so these skills are partially a reenactment of history. Many of these skills are the ways to enjoy extended periods of time in remote places, or a way to thrive in nature. Some people use these skills to better appreciate nature and for recreation, not just survival.
I bought this knife just because I was placing an order for some other items with BUDK and figured another $3, can’t go wrong. Well, it turned out to be one of my favorite knives. It came razor sharp out of the box. The sheath is worth more than $3 alone. The blade fits very nicely in the sheath. I have seen similar products to this one for many times the cost. But, there is no need to spend more than $3. This knife is perfect for hiking, backpacking etc. I have had this knife for 3 years, and have been very rough on it just because I know I can replace it for $3 if I need to. But, I haven’t done any damage to the knife or the sheath during all of the heavy usage. With this knife you have only $3 to loose and solid utility/survival knife to gain. buy one.
The water from swamps, even after they’ve been purified, can still smell really dodgy. To remedy this, add some charcoal to the water while it’s being boiled. Not only does this add to the purification process, but it also makes the water taste much more drinkable and jettison the bad smell.
Let’s hope you won’t be dealing with any “127 Hours” situations, but severe bleeding can be a real problem when trudging around in the unknown. Arterial bleeding is the most severe, characterized by bright-red, pulsating blood flow.
Signal your location. Make noise by whistling, shouting, singing, or banging rocks together. If you can, mark your location in such a way that it’s visible from the air. If you’re in a mountain meadow, make three piles of dark leaves or branches in a triangle. In sandy areas, make a large triangle in the sand. Three of anything in the wilderness is a standard distress signal.
Survival, is one of the most universal and basic human objectives. It’s the struggle to remain living: Self-preservation, an almost universal hallmark of life. And yet, never before in history has society been so unprepared for a major disaster or extended unrest. More frequent and devastating natural disasters, a very fragile financial system, violence on the rise, recurrent social unrest and clashes between authorities and civilians, the odds are that it won’t be long before one of these calamities test average person’s ability to stay safe and protect his or her family.
In case you don’t have a car or vehicle, or don’t plan on using one in a survival or emergency situation, you can completely ignore this section of the list. If a vehicle is in your emergency preparedness plan, however, you’ll want to make sure you’ll have these items at the very least.
