Survival, is one of the most universal and basic human objectives. It’s the struggle to remain living: Self-preservation, an almost universal hallmark of life. And yet, never before in history has society been so unprepared for a major disaster or extended unrest. More frequent and devastating natural disasters, a very fragile financial system, violence on the rise, recurrent social unrest and clashes between authorities and civilians, the odds are that it won’t be long before one of these calamities test average person’s ability to stay safe and protect his or her family.
Get a small fire going, then grab a bandage, smear it in Vaseline, and chuck it into the fire along with mosquito repellent, which yes, is flammable. This gets a big fire going fast. Next, quickly pile leaves on to cue the smoke which will get you noticed.
One of the keys to surviving the wilderness is to keep yourself fed. All your survival efforts will be useless if you don’t have to energy to execute your plans. Although you can hunt or fish for food, both of them require patience and a degree of skill.
If you find yourself in a survival type situation, you most certainly won’t have the utensils to cook your food. In that case, you may have to improvise to make your own. One of the best ways to cook in the wild is to grill. You can design a make-shift grill using metal rods or picks that you can find in your tent or backpacks.
Photo by F. TronchinDepending on the geographic location of the wilderness area you are visiting and the time of year, temperatures can vary dramatically over the course of 24 hours. Layer your clothing to stay warm and keep your pack light. Pack silk long johns, t-shirts, trekking pants that convert to shorts, underwear, socks, and nightclothes. A fleece jacket, windbreaker, and waterproof outer jacket should be enough to handle most conditions. Wear a good pair of hiking boots, but pack a pair of sandals and water shoes. Round out your wardrobe with gloves, hat, and a scarf.
Losing your direction without a compass can be a deadly mistake, and nature is not a forgiving beast. If you’re willing to wait a whole day, you can figure out west and east by the direction of the setting sun; but without food and water, time is a luxury you might not have. That’s why getting an accurate compass bearing is crucial, and you can do it easily with a simple analog watch.
In my last article on sizing your solar array, I said that if you have a solar array you should use batteries to store your power. This will enable you to run your home, tools and appliances when your solar panels are unable to provide enough power b…
stockphoto mania/ShutterstockSerious weather events are rare, but tree damage to homes does occasionally happen. To prevent it, maintain the trees on your property. The best time of year to have a tree pruned to make it safe is late autumn when the leaves have fallen; prune broad-leaved evergreens in May.
I don’t think you should give up the Quick Clots and swap them for maxi=pads or tampons. Quick Clot is shown to stop bleeding maybe 5 times faster which is life saving if you need that. A tampon/maxi-pad could be used for wounds, but not life threatening wounds. Just my 2 cents as a nurse.
The term survival kit may also refer to the larger, portable survival kits prepared by survivalists, called bug-out bags (BOBs), Personal Emergency Relocation Kits (PERKs) or get out of Dodge (GOOD) kits, which are packed into backpacks, or even duffel bags. These kits are designed specifically to be more easily carried by the individual in case alternate forms of transportation are unavailable or impossible to use.

most sites recommend starting with getting food resources for 1 week, then work to a month, then to a year. No one can do it all at once. You need to set priorities and make lists of items you need. The main thing is to START NOW !!

Why buy a muffled whistle to signal for help when you can buy an eardrum-bursting whistle to alert distant people to your distress? The Fox 40 is commonly used as a referee whistle at sporting events, and if it can be heard over the roar of a crown, it can be heard for a long way in the wild. Select bright-colored models for good visibility. This allows for easy retrieval from your pack or if you drop it. The pea-less design works great when wet, dry, and even in subfreezing conditions. If you’ve got any breath left in your body, blow this whistle until the rescue team arrives.
Lansky’s sharpener is awesome – we have one and you’re right it’s great. The fact that it’s so compact is a huge bonus. I really can’t believe I forgot to put knife sharpeners on the list – thanks so much for spotting that! When I revise the list, they’ll have to be on it!
One of the most important tip to making a shelter is making a bed. Never sleep on the bare floor of the woods. You can make a bed of dry leaves by arranging them inside your shelter. The bed will prevent the heat from your body seeping into the cold forest ground.
That is a big statement. That is also what I see so many people searching for, especially in contrast with the superficial values of our degenerative, consumeristic, capitalistic, western society. Perhaps more than anything else, wilderness survival served as the doorway to a deep and profound experience of connection, belonging, and meaning to my life. I’ve discovered along the way that my passion and purpose is to mentor others into that same profound sense of connection, belonging, and meaning that comes through wilderness survival and deep nature connection, ultimately guiding them to their deepest calling.
For personnel who are flying over large bodies of water, in additional to wearing a survival suit over cold water, a survival kit may have additional items such as flotation vests, sea anchor, fishing nets, fishing equipment, fluorescent sea marking dye, pyrotechnical signals, a survival radio and/or radio-beacon, formerly a distress marker light replaced by a flashing strobe, formerly a seawater still or chemical desalinator kit now replaced by a hand pumped reverse osmosis desalinator (MROD) for desalinating seawater, a raft repair kit, a paddle, a bailer and sponge, sunscreen, medical equipment, a whistle, a compass, and a sun shade hat.
A signal mirror can serve two vital survival purposes. First, a mirror can signal help to a rescue plan or helicopter. Using the power of the sun to shine a glare towards a rescue team is an excellent way to gain attention.
With a bit of ingenuity you’ve built yourself a shelter that costs much less than a popular brand name tent and should be able to withstand more wear and tear and protect from rain and wind, even snow. In a time of collapse and evacuation, it also catches less attention than something bright blue or orange or yellow like a popular brand name tent.
Water: Though boiling and distilling are methods for safe drinking water, you can’t always rely on these methods, especially if you’re in a hurry and have to out of a dangerous area or through hostile territory. You are going to want a way to quickly filter water and make it safe to drink.
