Needless to say, he slapped on the seal body and set out on his way. The Vikings used to use seals for sleeping bags, clothes and ropes, so we suppose it’s not too outrageous – although they did do a fair bit of pillaging as well, and we’re not so on board with that.

There are few things you need to be concerned with when selecting a camping tent. First, you’ll need to know how many people you plan on sleeping in it. Second, you’ll need to know how far you plan on packing it in so you can pick the correct weight. You’ll also need to find out whether the tent has a rain fly or not if you plan on camping during the rainy or snowy season.

Besides the great articles that Rourke puts out, he also has the best (I haven’t found one better yet) free survival resources page — everything from weapons and communications to medical and gardening. All free and all fantastic.

When assembling a kit for any trip, Forti takes something he calls the “rule of three’s” into account, which banks on the presumption that you can die in three hours when exposed to bad weather; that you can die in three days from thirst; and that you can die in three weeks from lack of food.

Well, it wasn’t long before I found out the hard way that I needed to pack & carry several extra sets of slingshot bands. Why? Because when one breaks you can’t repair’em by tying the two broken ends together, you have to replace the whole damn band. And if you don’t have a backup latex slingshot band, you’re screwed. That sucks!

This is an awesome trick that can be used in any situation for a little fun, though it’s still helpful in a survival sense if, say, your dog buries your car keys or something. It turns out that with just a handheld radio and a pocket calculator, you can make a crude metal detector. Here’s how it works:

Definitely don’t say: “Do you know who I am?!”/“My taxes pay your salary!”/ “Don’t you have anything better to do?!” Officers agree: Not being a jerk is the minimum requirement to getting out of a ticket.

I read once where a water tower was used to store water. Alas, this homeowner was thinking out of the box. The location was very remote. And being frail he dreaded trying to carry heavy deep cycle batteries.

This post is exactly what I would hope to find…solid info with simple action steps to point us in the right direction, undoubtedly followed up with specific, detailed info products you can sell us. 🙂

Another premade kit that knocked it out of the park. What a genius design! Who would have thought of outfitting a survival kit both inside and outside. Even better, there was a little room left over to add a couple of things on the inside. Although I enjoy putting Altoids survival tins myself, I couldn’t pass this one up. I’m glad I didn’t.

It may also happen that subjects with a lifetime less than some threshold may not be observed at all: this is called truncation. Note that truncation is different from left censoring, since for a left censored datum, we know the subject exists, but for a truncated datum, we may be completely unaware of the subject. Truncation is also common. In a so-called delayed entry study, subjects are not observed at all until they have reached a certain age. For example, people may not be observed until they have reached the age to enter school. Any deceased subjects in the pre-school age group would be unknown. Left-truncated data are common in actuarial work for life insurance and pensions.[4]

In this section of the website you will find an expanding library of information on wilderness survival tips and outdoor skills. Topics range from friction fires to shelter building, primitive cooking, flintknapping, and much more.

Use urine of females to attract prey: The urine of female animals can be used to attract males for hunting. Although finding female urine may be difficult, but if you hunt a female, you can store the urine.

Back again with a Cyber Monday post, and just as I’d hoped, Amazon’s deals are a lot better for knife aficionados – and hell even for outdoor gear junkies & survivalists – than Black Friday’s sales were. Concentrating on Amazon & Blad…

I notice you have one of the Gerber BG knives pictured. I own several Gerber’s including one of the BG folders I received as a gift, it’s buried in the bottom of my Bug Out Bag. If I ever need it, it’ll be there but I don’t want anyone to think I’d advertise for that idiot Bear. I always have a 3″ folding trapper in my pocket and a KBAR USMC fighter in the BOB along with an older well warn Barlow. You can’t have too many good tools and a good knife is a great tool.

What if you don’t happen to carry flint and steel set with you? Well, you can use the power of the sun to start a fire. All you need to do is put some water in a clear plastic bag and tie it like a balloon, as spherical as possible. When you hold this bag against the sun, you will see the familiar converging of the sun rays on the ground.

There is the initial decision to move thousands of miles away from home; the possible barrier, the culture shock, and the other challenges one may face on arrival; the acclimatizing to life as a scientist in the United States, and the periodic visa difficulties that have to be negotiated when traveling in and out of the country. The age at which a specified proportion of survivors remain can be found by solving the equation S(t) = q for t, where q is the quantile in question. Typically one is interested in the median lifetime, for which q = 1/2, or other quantiles such as q = 0.90 or q = 0.99. Coal fungus and horse hoof fungus have both very flammable properties. Break the fungus in half and you’ll reveal their flammable parts right in the core. They easily catch sparks. Most of these fungi are usually found in dead trees, which means you’ve got a good source of dry material there as well. What makes fungi particularly unique as tinder is that they smoulder – all you have to do is to blow into the ember to make the fire grow. Because of this, they make portable firelighters as well. But “roughing it” doesn’t have to mean “suffering”. In this chapter, we’ll help you identify the essential tools, gadgets and clothing items that come in handy when living in the outdoors. Similarly, you can survive about three weeks without food. Again, that does not mean that you will be up and about throughout the three weeks. It just means that you can ‘survive’ and not die if you don’t eat food for three weeks. You’re much less likely to need the heat generation survival gear if you live in a desert state or a place that typically does not get cooler weather. That being said, this type of gear can still be helpful in case of climate change or especially cold nights. If you do fall, make an air pocket ASAP. Try to fall in a rigid fetal position (arms over your face and chest) to attempt to make room for your lungs to breathe. One man survived the 2003 Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island by doing this and securing a small supply of fresh air through the blaze. S(t) is theoretically a smooth curve, but it is usually estimated using the Kaplan-Meier (KM) curve. The graph shows the KM plot for the aml data and can be interpreted as follows: I don’t know if this has been shared or not, but Penicillin and Amoxicillin should be included in the list of medicines, along with cephalosporin (Keflex). All of these I believe can still be found over the counter as farming supplies. Be careful, however, as the dosage for humans will be majorly different than that on the label. I would suggest getting a dosage chart for each antibiotic. Don’t be afraid to eat insects and other bugs. While it may be disgusting to eat a few grasshoppers, they do provide useful nutrition. All insects should be cooked as they can harbor parasites that can kill you. Do not eat any caterpillars, brightly colored insects, or any insect that can bite or sting you. Remove the legs, head and wings of any insect before eating. Rawles is an outspoken proponent of family preparedness, especially regarding food storage[64] and advocates relocating to lightly populated rural retreat areas. His preparedness philosophy emphasizes the fragility of modern society, the value of silver and other tangibles for barter, recognition of moral absolutes, being well-armed, maintaining a deep larder, relocation to rural retreats, and Christian charity.[65] In an interview in The New York Times, Rawles identified himself as a guns and groceries survivalist.[66]

After a rainfall, you can bet that moss, leaves, and all sorts of plants around you are wet. Collecting bundles of them and wringing them over a container can net you as much as a litre of water. Make sure you check out the tall grass as well. This is good for collecting fresh water because rainwater is guaranteed to be clean. This is also one of the easiest ways to collect water without having to purify it. Alternatively, you can also rub your clothes against the grass and wring out the moisture that gets stuck unto them.

If you’re out of water and, crucially, still somewhat hydrated, drinking your own urine can keep you alive. This is because relatively clear urine will hydrate you, but if it’s brown and thick, it’s just waste and won’t help at all.

Why? Well, ounce for ounce, an animal’s eyeball will give you more protein that a steak. Admittedly, Bear grimly declared the thing was “awful” after eating that eyeball in Siberia, but you’ve got to be strong-stomached if you’re willing to survive. A choice between death and eating an eyeball? We’d definitely go with the latter.

Global stocks plunge after Wall Street bloodbath. The Dow is now down around 8% from its all-time high. Just as I predicted, rising interest rates are what precipitated the plunge. Very comprehensive list, the first one I’ve seen a Personal Location Beacon on. I will comment on one aspect, communication, my family is scattered all over the country and I’m sure (hopefully) they will all want to know I’m OK. We have one member of the family as a contact for all of us to call on our cell phones. Local communication lines will be jammed, internet will be down. The next goal will be to remain safe for the first 3 days, but communication is #1. Good article! A lot of knowledge here.

Brave an animal ambush: We’ve all read about bear and shark attacks. But what about an aggressive wolf or deer? Regardless of species, stand your ground. Running will trigger the animal’s chase mentality, and unless you’re trying to avoid a snake, you won’t be able to run fast enough.

Option two: Replace it. Play a different song all the way through, at full volume, in an attempt to chase away your earworm with something more forgettable.
In one U.K. study, the most popular “cure” song was the national anthem, “God Save the Queen.” On this side of the pond, try humming “The Star-Spangled
Banner” to clear your head before twilight’s last gleaming.

The book was described as The preppers’ Bible, by a Reuters journalist.[20] His blog addresses preparing for the multitude of possible threats toward society. Rawles describes how to prepare against a post-disaster society that suffers looting, armed violence and food shortages. He recommends establishing rural safe havens at least 300 miles from the nearest major city, financial planning for a future barter-based economy, water retrieval and purification, food production and storage, security and self-defense techniques and strategies.[43][44]

A space blanket can be used to block wind and water, wrapped around the body prevent/counteract hypothermia, or even placed behind you to reflect a fire’s heat onto your back, but none of this is useful if the blanket is too small or tears the moment you unwrap it.

Caves can be great, but be sure the cave is not already occupied by bears, large cats, snakes or other unfriendly animals; they know caves are good too, and they’ve been looking for good shelter for longer than you have.

If you do fall, make an air pocket ASAP. Try to fall in a rigid fetal position (arms over your face and chest) to attempt to make room for your lungs to breathe. One man survived the 2003 Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island by doing this and securing a small supply of fresh air through the blaze.

by Brian Ford The debate over the place of firearms in modern American society continues to rage, much as it has for decades. While many arguments focus on specific types of arms, some question … Continue Reading about The Positive Impacts of Law-Abiding Citizens Owning Firearms

One of the most important tip to making a shelter is making a bed. Never sleep on the bare floor of the woods. You can make a bed of dry leaves by arranging them inside your shelter. The bed will prevent the heat from your body seeping into the cold forest ground.

This U.S. Air Force pilot and astronaut was aboard Mercury 9 and Gemini 5. Cooper had his exploits well documented in Tom Wolfe’s book The Right S… One of the top survival priorities in an emergency is to find and disinfect enough drinking water. Two of my favorite water disinfection tablets are Katadyn’s Micropur tablets, and Potable Aqua’s Iodine tablets. While these two products use different chemicals, they are both more than 99 percent effective against waterborne pathogens. So while they both are highly effective, you should still weigh the pros and cons of each. We live in the modern age though — in many ways we have an advantage. Most people need those advantages because going from a wired world to the wilderness comes with a learning curve — one that can kill you if you’re not prepared. Not my personal “go to” weapon of choice, but I’m also not a tactical pen-wielding master. I’ve seen videos on tactical pens being used for self-defense, and they are lethal in the right set of hands. The null hypothesis for a log-rank test is that the groups have the same survival. The expected number of subjects surviving at each time point in each is adjusted for the number of subjects at risk in the groups at each event time. The log-rank test determines if the observed number of events in each group is significantly different from the expected number. The formal test is based on a chi-squared statistic. When the log-rank statistic is large, it is evidence for a difference in the survival times between the groups. The log-rank statistic approximately has a chi-squared distribution with one degree of freedom, and the p-value is calculated using the chi-squared distribution. Round 75 ends on March 31st, so get busy writing and e-mail us your entry. Remember that there is a 1,500-word minimum, and that articles on practical “how to” skills for survival have an advantage in the judging. Compact saw such as Japanese style backsaw with coarse teeth (folding models available). Bow saws can quickly cut larger diameter limbs and small to medium thick trees, and Folding saws can be small enough to fit into a kit, but big enough to cut small to medium diameter limbs, and possibly smaller trees. Setting up a snare is simple. Just make a loop out of a thin metal wire by folding the wire back onto itself. It is like tying an overhand knot. Once the animal is trapped, the weight of the animal will be enough to synch the knot. Courtney is a full time writer covering soccer, travel and the outdoors. Our number 6 goes out to Rourke’s Modern Survival Online, which aims to teach and inform the average person about how to prepare for difficult times ahead. With the understanding that not everyone has the funds to build and stock a “survival retreat”, Modern Survival Online’s hope is to help the every-day person become better prepared.

Gear needs to be customized for each trip, Smith added. “I tell people to make a basic survival kit, but then add gear appropriate for where you’re going, be it the ocean, the desert, the tropics, the arctic, the mountains, or any other environment.”

Rawles believes that survivalists see a high risk of a coming societal meltdown and the need to prepare for the repercussions. He has said that the popular media has developed an incorrect far-right lunatic fringe image in part because of the actions of a radical few. He called this a distortion of the true message of survivalism. Unlike the handful of fringe proponents, Rawles focuses instead on family preparedness and personal freedom. He explais that the typical survivalist does not actually live in a rural area, but is rather a city dweller worried about the collapse of society who views the rural lifestyle as idyllic. He cautions that rural self-sufficiency actually involves a lot of hard work.[17] In 2009, he said: There’s so many people who are concerned about the economy that there’s a huge interest in preparedness, and it pretty much crosses all lines, social, economic, political and religious. There’s a steep learning curve going on right now.[1] In a December 2014 interview with The Economist magazine, Rawles described the survivalist movement as decentralized and full of people who value their privacy. He said: “You don’t want to be known as the guy who has 3-4 years’ supply of food in the basement. Because one day you could see it confiscated by the government or stolen by neighbours like hungry locusts.[18]

If you encounter snakes, leave them alone. Snakes bite because they are hungry or because they are threatened. We are too big to be seen as prey to most snakes; they do not regard humans as food. Stand still and the snake will go away. Attack it and it will retaliate. If one curls up in your kit, move it out with a long stick and gently prod it away. If it comes in your direction, stand still. It doesn’t know that you are causing its discomfort and if you do not jump around, it will probably not even notice you. However, if you kill the snake you enjoy eating it. Since you probably don’t know if it’s venomous or not, a good rule is to cut off the head, and then cut the same distance back from that point down the body. This will remove the poison glands, if there are any.

Just finished building my off grid home and now need to expand my preparation with food storage and production as well as survival gear and preparation. Thanks for all the great information. I have signed up for your daily info. Thanks again,

It could be a good idea if you have an interest in starting a preppers website but do you have any interest in this niche as you’ll probably struggle otherwise. Plus it will be difficult to create content with authority if you know nothing about it and the people in this niche will see that right away.

At night, there is a greater risk of freezing to death. Stay dry. Bundle up. Get yourself off the ground. Make a bed of layers of branches, leaves, twigs, whatever is there, and cover yourself with the same stuff. To stay warm at night, you can heat rocks in the fire, bury them, and sleep on top of them, but this is a painstaking process; it’s easier to place yourself between the fire and a large reflective object such as a fallen log, a boulder, or your space blanket.

One final thought to consider are the side effects. The toxicity and flavor of iodine can be a little problematic. The iodine tablets are generally not a good choice for pregnant women, anyone with thyroid issues, or shellfish allergies. Picky children are also notorious for failing to drink iodine-infused water, which could lead to dehydration and other serious repercussions in an already dicey emergency. The Katadyn product is chlorine-based, the flavor of which dissipates over the allotted 4-hour waiting period. That product is widely tolerated and tastes much better.

A record number of firearms enthusiasts made their way to the Florida State Fairgrounds this weekend to attend the Florida Gun Show, amid a fierce national debate over gun rights following the Valentine’s Day massacre at Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida.

Of course, every survivalist is different and has different needs. Thus, no two survival gear stockpiles or survival kits will look the same. Some will undoubtedly want to stay away from purchasing battery or electricity dependent gear, for instance, while others will want to go the hyper-minimalist route, only buying what they think they will really need (and perhaps be able to carry in a single backpack). Don’t feel pressured into extending your list of survival gear by buying something you don’t really think you’ll use. Instead, scan this list for items that you might have forgotten or think would really compliment your needs as a survivalist.

A torch is an excellent way to illuminate your path in the dark. You can also use it as a weapon to ward off attacks from wild animals. To make a torch, find a branch of a tree and split it in half. Stick a piece of bark in the fork and light the split end, that’s all! Birch tree branches make great torches.

This lovely tale comes from our very own island of Britain. Bear needed to swim to the mainland after finding himself stranded on an island. He had to swim, but in those freezing waters, quite possibly wouldn’t have made it the short distance.

Get a small fishing tackle box with a few essentials to catch some trout, bluegill, or bass. A few crankbaits, some plastic worms, toss in some catfish stink bait, some lead, some hooks, a bobber or 2 and you’re all set.

The rest of your ideas are awesome! The olive oil in a jar though. Some of your suggestions seem to be more relevant to a bug out situation, whereas the jar of oil is not. Very useful tip for a bug in situation though! Personally, I have lamps and lamp oil in stock for home use, plus emergency candles in my BOB.

When you get to a water source, you’ll want to filter it, purify it and put some in a bottle. Because you rarely know how far the next water source is and a water bottle keeps you hydrated between sources.

This device is fully operable with only one hand. There are spring action needlenose and standard pliers as well as wire cutters, two knife blades one straight the other serrated, 4 screwdrivers including one Phillips head, 1 saw blade, 1 strap cutter, oxygen tank wrench, can opener, bottle opener and a cleaning rod attachment. All the blades and tools lock in place and are composed of stainless steel. The whole crazy intricate multi bladed multi-tool is only four and a half inches in length, making it a bargain for survivalists. This nifty device which might one day save your precious life, can be found in retail stores or online for around 80 big bad bucks.

One of the techniques for misleading a drone’s camera is putting reflective material on the rooftops of houses or cars (glass, mirror) to try to reflect sunlight into the drone’s camera, making this poster a useful tool to interfere with the drone’s sensors. On a more associative level the mirrored material reminds us that drone surveillance is ultimately people watching people. In a way we are looking at ourselves through sophisticated mirrors.

Forti’s kit of choice is a bit larger and bulkier, but not overbearingly so. It can be worn on a belt in a pouch and includes enough gear to make a longer “unplanned wilderness excursion” survivable with some modicum of basic comfort.
Are you kidding me? The only two things that’s better about that one are vehicle physics and the fact that there are no visual sound markers. All the 3D rendering, e.g. buildings, the general design of the island, are all really clunky and unrealistic. And jumping physics are completely retarded.

His next single, Stand by Me, written with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, ultimately would be voted as one of the Songs of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America. King cited singers Brook Benton, Roy Hamilton and Sam Cooke as influences for his vocals of the song.[8] Stand by Me, There Goes My Baby, Spanish Harlem, and Save the Last Dance for Me were all named in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll;[9] and each of those records has earned a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.[10] King’s other well-known songs include Don’t Play That Song (You Lied), Amor, Seven Letters, How Can I Forget, On the Horizon, Young Boy Blues, First Taste of Love, Here Comes the Night, Ecstasy, and That’s When It Hurts. In the summer of 1963, King had a Top 30 hit with I (Who Have Nothing), which reached the Top 10 on New York’s radio station, WMCA.[11]
