Needless to say, he slapped on the seal body and set out on his way. The Vikings used to use seals for sleeping bags, clothes and ropes, so we suppose it’s not too outrageous – although they did do a fair bit of pillaging as well, and we’re not so on board with that.
There are few things you need to be concerned with when selecting a camping tent. First, you’ll need to know how many people you plan on sleeping in it. Second, you’ll need to know how far you plan on packing it in so you can pick the correct weight. You’ll also need to find out whether the tent has a rain fly or not if you plan on camping during the rainy or snowy season.
Besides the great articles that Rourke puts out, he also has the best (I haven’t found one better yet) free survival resources page — everything from weapons and communications to medical and gardening. All free and all fantastic.
When assembling a kit for any trip, Forti takes something he calls the “rule of three’s” into account, which banks on the presumption that you can die in three hours when exposed to bad weather; that you can die in three days from thirst; and that you can die in three weeks from lack of food.
Well, it wasn’t long before I found out the hard way that I needed to pack & carry several extra sets of slingshot bands. Why? Because when one breaks you can’t repair’em by tying the two broken ends together, you have to replace the whole damn band. And if you don’t have a backup latex slingshot band, you’re screwed. That sucks!
This is an awesome trick that can be used in any situation for a little fun, though it’s still helpful in a survival sense if, say, your dog buries your car keys or something. It turns out that with just a handheld radio and a pocket calculator, you can make a crude metal detector. Here’s how it works:
Definitely don’t say: “Do you know who I am?!”/“My taxes pay your salary!”/ “Don’t you have anything better to do?!” Officers agree: Not being a jerk is the minimum requirement to getting out of a ticket.
I read once where a water tower was used to store water. Alas, this homeowner was thinking out of the box. The location was very remote. And being frail he dreaded trying to carry heavy deep cycle batteries.
This post is exactly what I would hope to find…solid info with simple action steps to point us in the right direction, undoubtedly followed up with specific, detailed info products you can sell us. 🙂
Another premade kit that knocked it out of the park. What a genius design! Who would have thought of outfitting a survival kit both inside and outside. Even better, there was a little room left over to add a couple of things on the inside. Although I enjoy putting Altoids survival tins myself, I couldn’t pass this one up. I’m glad I didn’t.
It may also happen that subjects with a lifetime less than some threshold may not be observed at all: this is called truncation. Note that truncation is different from left censoring, since for a left censored datum, we know the subject exists, but for a truncated datum, we may be completely unaware of the subject. Truncation is also common. In a so-called delayed entry study, subjects are not observed at all until they have reached a certain age. For example, people may not be observed until they have reached the age to enter school. Any deceased subjects in the pre-school age group would be unknown. Left-truncated data are common in actuarial work for life insurance and pensions.
In this section of the website you will find an expanding library of information on wilderness survival tips and outdoor skills. Topics range from friction fires to shelter building, primitive cooking, flintknapping, and much more.
Use urine of females to attract prey: The urine of female animals can be used to attract males for hunting. Although finding female urine may be difficult, but if you hunt a female, you can store the urine.
Back again with a Cyber Monday post, and just as I’d hoped, Amazon’s deals are a lot better for knife aficionados – and hell even for outdoor gear junkies & survivalists – than Black Friday’s sales were. Concentrating on Amazon & Blad…
I notice you have one of the Gerber BG knives pictured. I own several Gerber’s including one of the BG folders I received as a gift, it’s buried in the bottom of my Bug Out Bag. If I ever need it, it’ll be there but I don’t want anyone to think I’d advertise for that idiot Bear. I always have a 3″ folding trapper in my pocket and a KBAR USMC fighter in the BOB along with an older well warn Barlow. You can’t have too many good tools and a good knife is a great tool.
What if you don’t happen to carry flint and steel set with you? Well, you can use the power of the sun to start a fire. All you need to do is put some water in a clear plastic bag and tie it like a balloon, as spherical as possible. When you hold this bag against the sun, you will see the familiar converging of the sun rays on the ground.

Being an international postdoc in the United States can be a daunting experience. There is the initial decision to move thousands of miles away from home; the possible barrier, the culture shock, and the other challenges one may face on arrival; the acclimatizing to life as a scientist in the United States, and the periodic visa difficulties that have to be negotiated when traveling in and out of the country.
The age at which a specified proportion of survivors remain can be found by solving the equation S(t) = q for t, where q is the quantile in question. Typically one is interested in the median lifetime, for which q = 1/2, or other quantiles such as q = 0.90 or q = 0.99.
Coal fungus and horse hoof fungus have both very flammable properties. Break the fungus in half and you’ll reveal their flammable parts right in the core. They easily catch sparks. Most of these fungi are usually found in dead trees, which means you’ve got a good source of dry material there as well. What makes fungi particularly unique as tinder is that they smoulder – all you have to do is to blow into the ember to make the fire grow. Because of this, they make portable firelighters as well.
Not my personal “go to” weapon of choice, but I’m also not a tactical pen-wielding master. I’ve seen videos on tactical pens being used for self-defense, and they are lethal in the right set of hands.
(time to sweep the solar panels) When doing any sort of design or even “back of the envelope” calculations for alternative energy systems (e.g. solar), among the important factors to consider are these: Solar Power and Energy requirements. – Power equals watts. – Energy equals power x time. I’m …
As some of you may know, Cape Town is running out of water. The local government has quite literally stated that in less than 100 days, they may have to turn off the taps entirely and water will be rationed out at designated outposts. Here’s the thing folks, South Africa …

What creates the thick smoke? – Dry grass, leaves, pine needles, paper, wood shaving, small sticks are great for starting fires. To sustain the fire, you will need to find dry wood , full branches and anything similar that will provide a slow but long lasting fuel. To create more smoke; simply add living branches, wet leaves and even rubber materials.
