A cautionary note about that pool shock: it is extremely hazardous (once opened)…it’ll eat through metals and (some) plastics and should be kept from moisture because that is what ‘activates’ it…wear gloves (the right kind), get an MSDS (manufacturer’s safety data sheet) from the internet and store it AWAY from your food supplies. If there are curious little ones in the vicinity, make sure you keep it locked up.

This is a really great post. Survivalife.com is very impressive and a market I think can still be penetrated if someone chose to. The site is designed to perfection, and as the first one to the punch, its become very successful.
• My next tip maybe common sense to some, but figured it’s still worth noting: for better maintenance of keeping balance, it’s best to keep heavier things on top and the lighter items at the bottom. What this will do is help you with stability while you are on the move.
• Digging for water: Certain plants indicate water sources are nearby. Identify plants, such as cattails, cottonwood or willows, and dig a seep hole until you reach moisture. Wait for water to collect in the hole.
I know nothing about survival, which is likely why I think this kit is great. I haven’t actually used it (and hopefully never will!!) but living in a potential earthquake zone, I thought I should get something for the car. Seems to be pretty comprehensive for short term survival. What I really love is the guide that comes with it. It’s really well written, easy to understand and assumes nothing about your prior experience or knowledge. Does not take up much space in the glove compartment.
Merely getting a survival bag and filling it with some equipment is not going to help you in your survival mission. Make sure that your bug out bag is properly organized so that you can rely on the gear to get you out of the tricky situation. Here are some tips to organize your bug out bag.

A Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device is only an effective tool for someone experienced in the basics of climbing. Climbing and descending by rope is not that difficult to learn and many cities have recreation centers and outfitters with indoor walls where you can be taught how to climb by an instructor. (To be more prepared for the wilderness, follow up with instruction on an actual rock face or cliff.)
The suggestions for the kit looks great, however I think you need to get your basics together first, fire making, shelter, first aid, food, and water,for at least 3 days, then weigh your kit. Now see how many pounds are left before you hit your maximum load which is going to vary for each person. Remember if your buggin out this isn’t a Saturday afternoon hike in the park where after three hours or so you thrown your pack in the car and go home. It’s going to be with you day in and day out.
