Acorns and oak bark have excellent medicinal properties to heal gastrointestinal problems. If you can find some acorns and oak bark, just boil it in water for 5 minutes and drink the concoction. It will help you fight diarrhea and other gastro-intestinal issues.
The log-rank test compares the survival times of two or more groups. This example uses a log-rank test for a difference in survival in the maintained versus non-maintained treatment groups in the aml data. The graph shows KM plots for the aml data broken out by treatment group, which is indicated by the variable x in the data.

It’s time to get creative. Familiarize yourself with how to build a lean-to; there are various types of shelters you can build and each has different pros and cons. Obviously you want overhead covering for warmth at night and protection from the elements. If you are in rocky, mountainous terrain, look for overhangs. Otherwise, use limbs and leaves or anything that can provide insulation. Pine needles usually blanket the ground in thick batches, excellent for bedding.
The great outdoors is home to some pretty creepy creatures, and ticks are particularly nasty. Ticks are arachnids just like spiders…but instead of minding their own business they jump onto you, burrow into your skin, and feast on your blood. Ticks are a very real survival threat. Many of them carry Lyme disease, which is… Read More
Pros need to outweigh cons. Is there a water source? Can you find food? Is the area ideal for signaling help? If these elements are lacking, determine if you can safely move to another spot. That said, the USAF Manual notes that it’s usually better to stay put.

blvdone/ShutterstockWhen a huge crowd hits a tight choke point, a scary thing happens: The crowd starts moving like a fluid, each person forced forward by the people behind, regardless of whether there’s anywhere to move. This occurred last September when a group of more than a million pilgrims reached a narrow street intersection in Mecca. Trapped between the force of people behind them and the wall of people in front of them, some 2,200 died from compressive asphyxiation, the air literally crushed from their lungs. It’s a terrible fate but one you can avoid. Here’s how.
Set the radio to AM and tune it to a frequency that doesn’t pick up a station—the higher the frequency the better, but the only sound coming out should be static. Now turn up the radio’s volume, take the calculator in the other hand (it should be on), and angle the two so that they sort of face each other. At the right angle, the radio’s static will turn to a light buzz—you’ll hear the difference, but you might need to experiment with the angle and the distance between the calculator and radio. If you sweep this makeshift device over the ground, any metal buried relatively close to the surface will strengthen the sound of the buzz.

Several sections of the Survival Guide have been written specifically for prospective postdocs. Postdocing in the U.S. describes for the uninitiated what it is like to do a fellowship in this country, and how it may differ from similar experiences within other countries. Going in With Your Eyes Open offers advice on what people should ask before they accept a postdoctoral fellowship position in the United States. There is also advice for international postdocs for whom English is a foreign language.

If you find yourself stuck in the wilderness during the winter, do not eat snow unless you fully melt and warm it first! If you eat snow your body temperature will drop and you risk hypothermia or death. An on-the-go method of warming snow is to place it in your water bottle and place that between your jacket and clothing.
I’ve ordered several items from this company and have got exactly what I was promised. As some others have stated, the products were made in China but are what they promised. I feel I got a fair product for a fair price. I’ll watch for unexpected charges but have not had any so far. I’m happy with this company. And yes I would recommend them to friends. Also, I’ve order the HR30, the spy pen, the fire starter and a flash light and all came in good time and were decent products for what I paid.
Request a security blanket. According to Mark Burhenne, DDS, wearing a weighted blanket like the ones used during X-rays can make you feel safer in the chair. It pairs nicely with a therapy dog—a cuddly service that more and more practices are offering.
Things can get frustrating when it comes to finding adequate sources of food when you are in survival mode, especially since malnutrition will work you mentally and physically, making you feel weak, cranky and delirious. It’s a good idea to get familiar with edible wild berries and plants for future reference when out in the wild. Also, it’s time to grow up and banish the word “picky” from your vocabulary. When it comes to survival, embrace anything and everything (carefully) including bugs, eggs, fruit, leaves. Learn to build some simple traps to catch small animals and don’t rely on just one single food source. Protein is important for strength; know what various nutrients your body needs for prime sustainability.
I discovered Mr. Rawles’ site a couple years ago, and you are correct! It is fantastic, but I am glad to learn about more sites, though I do visit SHTF often. Not strictly survival sites, but fantastic for financial/economic information, I highly recommend http://www.zerohedge.com and http://www.dollarcollapse.com and also for all the news that is fit (or not) to print, http://www.rense.com. There are not enough hours in the day for me to read all the wonderful information on the internet.
Also, I like olive oil lamps, but they do have their drawbacks. You must maintain a close distance between the lit portion of the lamp and the surface of the oil, and, they are quite messy, especially when the daily (or every few hours) wick trimming time comes around. Candles are superior except for the fact that olive oil lamps self extinguish if they are knocked over, and they don’t produce as much soot and fumes. I don’t use a mason jar, I use a shorter sized wide mouth canning jar (about three inches tall) it’s more stable and you cannot use more oil than that at a time anyway. The wide mouth part is a must, imho. Reaching inside a narrow opening to raise the wick is not easy.

Survival analysis is a branch of statistics for analyzing the expected duration of time until one or more events happen, such as death in biological organisms and failure in mechanical systems. This is called reliability theory or reliability analysis in engineering, duration analysis or duration modelling in economics, and event history analysis in sociology. Survival analysis attempts to answer questions such as: what is the proportion of a population which will survive past a certain time? Of those that survive, at what rate will they die or fail? Can multiple causes of death or failure be taken into account? How do particular circumstances or characteristics increase or decrease the probability of survival?
In this list I share the top 10 most influential survival and preparedness blogs. Although this may be my list, I did not pick these randomly. I used a number of factors in determining their “influence”: Google PageRank, number of incoming links, traffic, blog comments/discussions, and Alexa Rank as well as “that special something” (very scientific, I know).
The kits provided for Soviet and Russian Cosmonauts are optimised for survival in the temperate and sub-arctic mountains, forests and grasslands in the east of the country. Soyuz spacecraft kits include food rations, water bottles, warm clothing, rope for making a shelter using the capsule’s parachute, fish hooks and miscellaneous other survival gear. A specially designed pistol, the TP-82, was provided to defend against predators such as wolves or bears. It was able to fire conventional bullets, shotgun cartridges and flares; the folding stock could be used as a shovel and it also had a fold-out machete.
As per the perspective of a human being, we are born, we grow old and older and die. Only a lucky few will live to be a hundred years old. When we are born, instead of viewing it as WE come into existence, let us switch our perspectives and think that the world comes into existence for us. And when we die, the world is no more for us. So, for us its only that 100 years of world with everything in it. After I am gone, there is no world because there is no ‘me’ to behold it. So, my purpose of life should be to enjoy and stay happy in those 100 years instead of worrying to make the world a better place.

A recreational day hike could easily turn into a survival situation causing you to camp overnight in the wilderness. Take the wrong turn on the trail or forget to orient your map to the terrain and you might be walking the opposite direction in which you thought. It is important to always carry a shelter, fire striker or matches and something to carry water in, no matter how short a trip you have planned. BUDK has a large selection of everything you need for camping and survival needs!
The North Star always points to true north, which is great for when you don’t have a compass at night or when you want to check the accuracy of the compass you have. Try looking for the big dipper first, which is easy to find if you know your constellations. Then draw an imaginary straight line through the edges of the big dipper and this will lead you to the tail of the little dipper. This is the North Star.
But here’s what you can do: find a piece of plastic (saran wrap is perfect) with which you can seal the hole, so that the chest cavity around the lung doesn’t get more air pressure than the lung itself. If this happens, the lung will collapse. When you seal the hole, leave a flap at the bottom that will allow air to leave through the wound without entering it. This may seem useless now, but you never know—you might have to save someone’s life someday.
