I basically gave up carrying a flashlight due to a lack of pocket space. I recently found this thing on Amazon and since then have been carrying it. It’s freaking amazing (relative to its size). Side note – picked up the Matriarch Wave just…
Launch a project (or a rocket): Like the jilted New Zealand woman who launched her wedding ring into space on a homemade rocket or the blogger who got a book deal from devising “101 uses for my ex-wife’s wedding dress,” you, too, can channel hard feelings into hard work.
Empty beer or aluminum cans have so many practical uses in the field that they should be one of the first things that we look for in a survival situation. Let’s take a look at a few examples of how you can turn someone’s trash into treasure when resources are scarce. Related video: …
Several sections of the Survival Guide have been written specifically for prospective postdocs. Postdocing in the U.S. describes for the uninitiated what it is like to do a fellowship in this country, and how it may differ from similar experiences within other countries. Going in With Your Eyes Open offers advice on what people should ask before they accept a postdoctoral fellowship position in the United States. There is also advice for international postdocs for whom English is a foreign language.
Tip: Also purchase roadside flares and keep on hand for an emergency calling for a fast fire. Flame-producing hand held roadside flares like Orion Safety Flares are different than the ones above and not fired from a gun. Carry these in your vehicle and take a couple on your next hiking trip packed safely in a waterproof container — these can be used to start a fire in wet conditions also, with very little work.
The costs of the various items for sale at Survival Life will vary depending on what you are receiving, but the current offer regarding the Free Credit Card Knife is that all you need to pay is $2.95 Shipping and Handling. There is no information regarding a free trial or potential future payments.
Glow sticks can be life savers in survival situations. These are small sticks that are filled with a chemical substance that emits light when mechanical shock triggers a chemical reaction. I am sure you must have seen them at parties and such, but they are of great value to a survivalist.
I am compiling this wilderness survival guide from my direct experiences in nature, as well as my 15 years as a wilderness survival guide. This page is both a general overview of survival in the wilderness, as well as a gateway to a wide variety of wilderness survival skills. So be sure to check the links throughout this page for more information.
When you’re in a dark, troubled place acknowledge it. Face your fears, worries and enemies and see what happens. When you look right into the face of despair and start to deal with it you’re on your way to freedom.
The US Army uses several basic survival kits, mainly for aviators, some of which are stored in carrying bags. Aviators in planes with ejection seats have survival kits in a vest and the seat pan, the survival vest worn by US helicopter crews also contains some basic survival items.
Over at Backdoor Survival, Gaye wrote a nice introductory post on cryptocurrency and prepping: Cryptocurrencies and Preppers – a Match Made in Heaven? She seems pretty positive on crypto. But I’d like to add my two cents. (I mean, my … Continue reading →

Take any small piece of cloth and place it inside a metal container. Make sure that the container has a cover. Burn the container (with the cloth inside it) for a couple of minutes. You know you’re doing it right if the cloth remains intact but is dark from all the burning. Char cloth is really great for starting fires because it catches fire with just a small spark. Tip: Try cutting or ripping a large cloth into really small pieces and neatly roll them inside a tuna can. You’ll have yourself an entire pack of char cloth!
This list has nothing to do with Survival, come on, that pack is heavy. A Samikniv, a metal water bottle, warm and waterproof clothing. The list is for a canoe trip or a if you are living a permanent place for decades.
Have an escape plan. The phrases “I won’t keep you” and “Give my regards to [mutual acquaintance]” are your allies. When the conversation reaches a dead end, employ them. Try these tips to make small talk from expert minglers.
Scout your area. Though you shouldn’t move around too much, you should explore your immediate surrounds to find anything useful. You could find things someone left there before, be it a tin can or small lighter, it can be helpful significantly. Be sure you can always find your way back to your point zero as you search for water, shelter, or your way home.
If you keep focusing the bright light onto some dry kindle, you will soon start a fire. The focal length of your improvised device is smaller than a magnifying glass so, you will have to hold this improvised device about 1-2 inches from the kindling.
The first line item. More than one source. Energy is energy. It does not go away. Gas in your car is burned making you go. Solar rays, can be used to generator electricity and/or to generate heat. So, a system that captures heat. Can turn the heat into steam, the steam into a motor- which spins a generator. Vice a solar panel into electricity. Sources can be City generator electrical power (or steam etc). Diesel motors can be modified or purchased to run on more than one type of fuel. (Diesel, NPG, LPG, Propane)… Or if you have a water source a water wheel…. Multiple sources. How to spin the generator.
Coal fungus and horse hoof fungus have both very flammable properties. Break the fungus in half and you’ll reveal their flammable parts right in the core. They easily catch sparks. Most of these fungi are usually found in dead trees, which means you’ve got a good source of dry material there as well. What makes fungi particularly unique as tinder is that they smoulder – all you have to do is to blow into the ember to make the fire grow. Because of this, they make portable firelighters as well.
A record number of firearms enthusiasts made their way to the Florida State Fairgrounds this weekend to attend the Florida Gun Show, amid a fierce national debate over gun rights following the Valentine’s Day massacre at Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida.
The bottom line? The Katadyn Micropur tablets cost more and take longer to work, but are widely tolerated in water. Potable Aqua’s iodine tablets are cheaper, last longer, and work faster, but they do taste funny. Take your pick.
So an album that I wrote and sang on back in 2002 just got a little acclaim from Rolling Stone! And they quote me from my interview from Beneath the Grid Music. Now… how to get a mention for Survival Guide… *starts frantically jotting down new lyrics and random music notes*

Like our earth based hunter-gatherer ancestors, a good survivalist has a relationship with a wide variety of diverse species that can all serve as foods, depending on the season and location. Take a look at this wilderness survival food list to learn more.
Why do I rate binoculars in the Top 10 Survival Gear? Not only do binoculars help hunters spot game animals — they help people lost in the wilderness identify distant features in the terrain, sometimes saving several miles of needless travel. Misreading the terrain can bring a person to the edge of a cliff or canyon or to a river that is simply to dangerous to cross. Now you have to turn back.
The carbon sheets that you can get from saws have been proven to be able to withstand 22 calibre pistol bullets. With just a bit of duct tape and some proper attachment, you can create armour around your backpack and clothes that will protect you from shrapnel, arrows, and certain types of bullets. They’re bendable, snap proof, and pretty darn useful. There is a caveat though, Carbon steel will rust and is not stainless steel.
Blisters can be a literal pain, and they happen a lot when you’re out in the wilderness. If you have a blister, take a needle and a string and poke a hole between two opposite ends of the blister. This will drain the water out and allow the blister to heal faster. If you think you’re about to get a blister, use duct tape to cover the area. This will prevent the blister from forming in the first place because it minimizes friction.
I have to admit it, I LOVE wilderness survival. I first began learning wilderness survival out of a deep, primal need to feel in my bones that I could provide for my most basic human needs directly from nature. It seemed crazy to me that my life was totally dependent on a complex system of grocery stores, polluted highways, telecommunication systems, electric grids, modern structures, water treatment plants, and more. I mean, shouldn’t we all be able to be in direct relationship with our most primary needs? Perhaps idealistic, but that is what inspired me to begin my journey to become a wilderness survival guide over a decade ago.
Don’t worry about those questions. Instead take action and educate yourself on survival techniques. Nature is unforgiving and you must be prepared to fight to stay alive. The contents of this website are taken from actual US Army training manuals, this is the same material used to train the best army in the world. You will not find a more complete resource on Wilderness Survival. So prepare yourself because one day you may need it.
One of the top survival priorities in an emergency is to find and disinfect enough drinking water. Two of my favorite water disinfection tablets are Katadyn’s Micropur tablets, and Potable Aqua’s Iodine tablets. While these two products use different chemicals, they are both more than 99 percent effective against waterborne pathogens. So while they both are highly effective, you should still weigh the pros and cons of each.
The medical supplies may include a blood pressure gauge, stethoscope, scissors, tweezers, forceps, disposable scalpels, two thermometers (oral and rectal), inflatable splints, bandages, sutures, adhesive tape, gauze, burn ointment, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, rubbing alcohol, ipecac syrup, sterile water, cotton rags, soap, and cotton swabs.

It was very intriguing to see that business people came out, by in large, the best from the whole debacle. Also, that bad as it was problems still presented opportunities, The sun continued to rise and set. People invested in cars, the country didn’t go back to horse and buggy.
