Africa Studio/ShutterstockGrab an ice cube. If you rub an ice cube on the spot between your thumb and index finger, it sends cold signals to your brain, which in turn can tamp down the pain signals coming from your tooth. In one study, people who did this reduced their pain levels by 50 percent compared to people who rubbed the spot with no ice. You can also try one of these toothache remedies.
If you don’t have a lighter or any matches, you will have to start the fire by hand. If you find enough tinder (small material, such as dry grass, feathers or bark shavings, that burns easily) you can usually use the energy from the sun to start a fire with a magnifying glass, a lens from your glasses, a piece of broken glass, a cover to a watch or compass, or other clear, light-intensifying objects. It is very difficult to start a fire by friction; your best bet is to carry a variety of fire-starting implements.

While yes, chapped lips are far from a prepper’s first priority, these little sticks of balm are worth far more than their ability to heal lips. That tube of lip balm can do everything from protecting your knife from rusting to helping you start a fire. Let’s look at some of the ways lip balm can help you in … Continue Reading →
I am sure that you must have seen those ugly looking rain ponchos. However, if you are heading out to camp or hunt, these seemingly simple things can add significant value to your kit. These ponchos can be used in several ways if a survival situation presents itself.
We’ve thought about doing a bug out bag guide so many times before it’d be impossible to count, but somehow in 4 years, still haven’t actually published one. The why comes down to the fact that, unlike comprehensive lists – like of all…
I enjoyed your article, made me consider a few things I hadn’t thought of. I know we live in different countries but #12 should be #1. The human race is ugly…period. I’ve seen it in Hurricane Katrina, Mt. Penetubo eruption and 27 months in combat in the middle east…You need weapons and a solid team of like minded people, otherwise your whole list of goodies gets taken away and you get killed or worse. In England…my first priority would be “borrowing” some real weapons from your military/police people, whether they like it or not…..here is the U.S. I already have that base well covered. In SHTF remember the “Golden Rule”…….”Do unto others BEFORE they do unto you”. Because they are going to try….thanks for the food for thought. Cary Kieffer

Reaching for a multi-tool is as easy as simply finding one with pliers, and a Phillips screw driver, right? Actually that’s wrong. A Phillips screw driver might come in handy on several occasions but there are a lot more screw head types that call for special fittings. These special fittings can quickly take parts off vehicles, remove hardware around locking mechanisms, and remove ventilation coverings. A good multi-tool is essential to urban survival, is made of stainless steel, and can withstand years’ of use. If you’re going to be anywhere near an urban environment, look, at the Swiss Tool Spirit Plus. Here’s a multi-tool with 38 functions, including a bit wrench with 6 bits (important for screw heads that a Phillips or standard screwdriver will not fit).
For the example data, the log-rank test for difference in survival gives a p-value of p=0.0653, indicating that the treatment groups do not differ significantly in survival, assuming an alpha level of 0.05. The sample size of 23 subjects is modest, so there is little power to detect differences between the treatment groups. The chi-squared test is based on asymptotic approximation, so the p-value should be regarded with caution for small sample sizes.

Some survival knives have a hollow handle which is filled with a waterproof survival kit with such necessities as waterproof matches and a compass.
A signal mirror can serve two vital survival purposes. First, a mirror can signal help to a rescue plan or helicopter. Using the power of the sun to shine a glare towards a rescue team is an excellent way to gain attention.

Another alternative is use an axe but since the objective is to build fires anyway, it doesn’t need to be perfectly chopped. However, if the wood material will be used for shelter building or creating other necessary pillars, using tools are a good idea. In fact, we put together a resource on how to make a survival shelter, given the popularity of this topic.
If you sleep downwind to the campfire, your whole shelter will soon start smelling like smoke and fire, and you don’t want that. Also, there is a chance that if the gusts are strong, a burning piece firewood can fly right into your shelter while you are asleep.
