A long while back, close to when we originally started penning this blog, I published an article about the most popular/best selling survival books in existence. While I know there will be plenty of overlap (what kind of a survival book list w…

This means going for waterproof versions of equipment (i.e. watches and compasses) and getting equipment that will keep your other stuff protected from water. Always use containers that have waterproof seals and never mix anything damp with all your other drop stuff. This is especially important for food containers, because moisture can only hasten spoilage. Water may be essential for hydration, but for everything else, staying as dry as possible is a must for survival.

Imagine the ground under you is moving and you’re in the middle of an earthquake. It’s pretty scary, isn’t it? Unfortunately, it’s not exactly possible to predict earthquakes, though they can be anticipated. The natural disasters mainly occur near edges of tectonic plates (hello, California); however, they can occur anywhere. Learning what to do in the event of a major earthquake is an essential survival skill to have, and one that allows you to walk away wi… Continue Reading →
I ordered 8 items on 7/16 & 7/17/15 & waited 21 business days without result (they charged my credit cards & I paid for the goods the day they were ordered). I called on 8/18/15 asking where my orders were. I was advised that they had a tracking number (never provided) but that the items were sold out. I asked when they’d be available without result. I demanded a refund which they agreed to provide. To my dismay, however, I discovered I had been charged $19.95 twice .unknowingly. I await the credit to my credit card. I was offended by the practice this firm engages in of unknowingly charging its customers $19.95 per order received without ever disclosing the fact that it will be doing so and without the customer’s knowledge or permission. This is a deceptive, offensive & unethical practice which honest merchants do not engage in. Accordingly, BE WARNED THAT YOULL BE CHARGED IMPROPERLY & YOU WILL NOT BE ADVISED OF SUCH CHARGES. OTHER REVIEWS MANIFEST THE FACT THAT THIS IS THIS MERCHANTS REGULAR CONDUCT. BEWARE!!!!!

This example uses the Acute Myelogenous Leukemia survival data set aml from the survival package in R. The data set is from Miller (1997) and the question is whether the standard course of chemotherapy should be extended (‘maintained’) for additional cycles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the United States is planning to deploy five cruisers and 30 destroyers near the Russian border. Should the US make the mistake of attacking Russia, however small the attack may be, Putin will launch nuclear weapons.

Speaking of hairbands. I sometimes found myself in need of rubber bands while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s amazing how and when the need for such a trivial little thing can arise. And I discovered hairbands are tougher. Paperclips are also in my BOB. Never know when you may need a short bit of light duty wire to use as an improvised needle or fish hook, light duty clamp, or twist ties. Small, compact, and lightweight. I have two cellophane wrappers from cigarette packs, one holds a small assortment of different sized hairbands, the other has an assortment of different sized paperclips. Both of them together weigh about 3 ounces and take up less space than just one of the cigarette packs that yielded the wrappers.
Keep a pocket knife, or multi-tool with you at all times, because you never know when you will need it- and when you do need it, you will rejoice that you have something to cut, protect and prepare food- even if all you have is a crappy, little knife. Now just learn how to sharpen it like MacGuyver.

I will be curious of your opinion about this… Do you believe that there is an increasingly two tiered economy / society? The “Haves” and the “Have Nots”? If yes, are you increasingly concerned as it relates to your security and preparedness? To what extent might this two tiered society …
There’s a wide variety of clothing that would be helpful in emergency and survival situations. On top of your day-to-day clothing, you may want to be sure to include at least a few of the items below in your clothing/apparel prepper gear stockpile. Especially, of course, if you’re worried about long term survival.
This weekend is non-refundable. Due to the small class size, and inherent variability in this industry, we are unable to meet the requests that arise as there are fixed costs associated with this workshop. Thank you for your understanding.
It should be bright: Of course, a tactical flashlight should be bright. However, too much brightness can be dangerous in the wild. It may spook wildlife or can catch the attention of the predators. Make sure that your flashlight has adjustable light output.
Survivors: A Novel of the Coming Collapse is a contemporaneous sequel novel that parallels the events that occur in Patriots, following a hyperinflationary socioeconomic collapse and the subsequent events known as The Crunch. The novel follows several new characters (and some characters from Patriots) as they attempt to survive in the United States following The Crunch as they deal with criminal gangs, a provisional American government, and the general breakdown of society. The book was released on 4 October 2011. It rose to #2 in Amazon’s overall book sales ranks, the same day. On 23 October 2011, it was listed at #3 in the New York Times Best Sellers list in the fiction hardback category. Less than a month after publication, the novel had gone through four printings and had 52,500 copies in print. A Spanish edition (titled Superviventes), was released in 2014.
John’s workshop answered a lot of my questions -and questions I didn’t know I had, about the business side of commercial photography. He runs you through a job from start to finish. He starts with how to market yourself to the work you want, bidding for the job, running all the way to how to thank your client at the end of a great shoot. He shows you how to be the best photographer and business manager you can be. This isn’t to mention all of the real world insights he slips in. The information is worth it all by itself, but the relationships you’ll build and the fun you have will simply put the whole experience over the top!
I received mine a couple of days ago and was surprised at the quality of this kit. I have bought a ton of other survival kits in the past and was almost always satisfied with them even after doing research on them. I don’t know if the battery on top of the knife died that powers the flashlight but the LED light was super dim. Dim as in, I tried using in in total darkness and couldn’t see anything, not even the knife. The compass had a lot of air bubbles in it and it doesn’t even give a correct reading. I tried holding it in my hand, putting it on level surfaces and still it wouldn’t give a correct reading. I would move the compass about 5 inches to the left or right and the directional arrows would turn randomly 180degrees even though I didn’t rotate it or anything. The clasp that closes the kit together snapped off the first day. Also, the run channels that make the kit waterproof aren’t fully aligned because there are gaps when I would close the kit before the main clasp broke off. I am not happy with this profuct. Maybe I got a defective one (a lemon) but I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone and will not buy it in the future.
Need to stitch something up in the field? This heavy duty sewing needle (called an awl) makes stitching things together like tarp, leather, torn clothing, and even shoes that have split possible. Along with heavy duty thread that means that you can extend the life of essential survival gear that breaks or tears on you with repeat use.
Make sure that you have a thorough understanding of an area you are going to camp or hunt. If possible, memorize the maps and talk to people who have already been to the area. That way, you can anticipate the potential situations that may come forth.
You’re much less likely to need the heat generation survival gear if you live in a desert state or a place that typically does not get cooler weather. That being said, this type of gear can still be helpful in case of climate change or especially cold nights.
As a wilderness survival guide, I often am called upon to differentiate wilderness survival from primitive living. Often times these two are lumped together as one, but in fact they are distinct. Wilderness survival refers to the actual experience of survival in the wilderness, which may or may not be a primitive experience depending on the gear you have access to. Wilderness survival is usually a short term experience. Primitive Living is usually a long term experience, and refers to the experience of living in a primitive setting, practicing primitive skills for an extended period of time.

Before you leave, learn how to use a compass. If you have a map and can spot a few prominent landscapes, you can actually use the compass to triangulate your position and, from there, figure out where you need to go.
