An SOS signal is the universal call for help. You can cause the signal using the light as well as sound. The message consists of three dots followed by three dashes followed by three dots. If you’re using light, an SOS signal would be three short bursts of light followed by three long bursts followed by three more short bursts. The same logic applies if you are using sound. Make sure that you practice the signal before you need to use it.
“The [Second Amendment’s] prohibition is general. No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give to Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under some general pretense by a state legislature. But if in any blind pursuit of inordinate power, either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both.” – William Rawle
If you’re putting together a solid first aid kit, you have to decide if that kit is going to have to perform in long-term survival settings. You can put together a decent kit or even consider one of our specially-designed kits, but what if a disast…
However, there is no substitute for experience in any outdoor situation, and your reaction in a survival situation depends on your education and training. Always keep in mind that a wilderness survival situation can happen to you. Be prepared and plan to survive.
This means going for waterproof versions of equipment (i.e. watches and compasses) and getting equipment that will keep your other stuff protected from water. Always use containers that have waterproof seals and never mix anything damp with all your other drop stuff. This is especially important for food containers, because moisture can only hasten spoilage. Water may be essential for hydration, but for everything else, staying as dry as possible is a must for survival.
Being an international postdoc in the United States can be a daunting experience. There is the initial decision to move thousands of miles away from home; the possible language barrier, the culture shock, and the other challenges one may face on arrival; the acclimatizing to life as a scientist in the United States, and the periodic visa difficulties that have to be negotiated when traveling in and out of the country.
(time to sweep the solar panels) When doing any sort of design or even “back of the envelope” calculations for alternative energy systems (e.g. solar), among the important factors to consider are these: Solar Power and Energy requirements. – Power equals watts. – Energy equals power x time. I’m …
I read SurvivalBlog daily and SHTFPlan occasionally. along with a few others. Your list turned me on to yet others of which I had previously been unaware. Thank you for that. With all this good info available, one could spend their entire waking hours reading prepping sites and gathering information. So here’s my question: If you spend all your time reading about prepping, when do you find time to actually do anything?
Survival Power: Though a Marlin 336XLR comes at a higher price, this rifle is suggested for people who haven’t spent a lot of time on a gun range — and again that is due to it’s higher accuracy, requiring less marksmanship skills to get your aim correct. There are rifles that do come in at a lot less cost; but with these rifles a lot more time should be spent learning how to shoot with a scope so that you can correctly hit your target.
Survival Mastery’s main objective is to be the best survival blog offering information on survival skills, tactics and knowledge regarding the field of preparedness. This is a blog for anyone who wants to be prepared in front of any type of danger and destruction. Also, we want to show everyone that preparing yourself for a future dark event doesn’t mean that you’re paranoid or crazy, you’re just being cautious.
Take a piece of the ribbon and tie it with a knot at the bitter end. Now, twist the skin to create a powerful thread. Use the other piece and wrap it on top of the first string. Repeat a third string. Make a few these mini strings.
Not only does this kit assemble into a shovel – perhaps the most basic of all survival tools – the handle itself is a multi-tool, disassembling into components that include a knife, a fire starter, a saw, a screwdriver, and on and on it goes. The adjustable shovel blade itself includes a ruler and a can/bottle opener, and one side of it is designed to be used as a knife edge. This shovel is a goddamn badass.
Hold your watch horizontally and point it so that the hour hand is facing into the sun. At the center point between the 12 and the hour hand is your north/south line, with north facing away from the sun. So if the hour hand is pointing at 4, for example, the 2 would point towards the south and the 8 would point towards the north.
Once the system gets broken the entire functionality is lost. Humans are humans, no matter where you are. There is a lot of thugs that are tied only by very thin ropes of fear. Once the system gets those ties loose in some way…then you have a problem, as a citizen. A very big one.
This multi functional survival tool is a must have for any individual to have in their survival kit. It is light weight and compact but has the ability to start a fire in any weather condition. The magnesium stick will put off sparks at 3000 degrees Celcius and with ability to handle ove..
Most of the predatory animals are nocturnal and trust me; they are built for hunting at night. They can see you better than you know even if it is pitch black. Also, the floor of the woods is covered with insects and snakes that also come out during the night. Remember, you are traveling in a land that you have never tread. You can fall off a cliff if you can’t see where you are going.
Each day I practiced what Rumi suggested. I learned how to ‘welcome and entertain’ my managers’ rudeness. I treated her ‘honorably’ with respect in our meetings; all the ‘sorrows’… the insults, rules and meanness she aimed at me I was able to endure because I knew in my heart I was a success and not a failure. The picture of some ‘new delight’ waiting for me in my next job kept me focused and strong.
Being burned is a modern world reality. Not all of us have had a dislocated shoulder or severe lacerations, but I can almost guarantee that everyone reading this has been burned at least once. I find it interesting that there’s typically so m…
One of the easiest plants you can eat are dandelions: You can eat the flower part (it’s yellow). Just pick it off the stem with your fingers. Don’t eat the sap, it’s a white liquid (it’s very bitter). To find more edible plants, check out: https://www.wikihow.com/Find-Wild-Edible-Plants.
Regardless of what it looks like, a wilderness survival shelter should embrace these essential principles. It should provide insulation and protection from all elements. It should include a heart source, whether that is a fire, the sun, or trapping body heat. It should be placed in a good location – think high and dry. And lastly, it should offer comfort and sanctuary. After all, this will be your new home.
After a rainfall, you can bet that moss, leaves, and all sorts of plants around you are wet. Collecting bundles of them and wringing them over a container can net you as much as a litre of water. Make sure you check out the tall grass as well. This is good for collecting fresh water because rainwater is guaranteed to be clean. This is also one of the easiest ways to collect water without having to purify it. Alternatively, you can also rub your clothes against the grass and wring out the moisture that gets stuck unto them.
Planning out what to eat after an emergency situation arises is one of the first things survivalists and preppers typically do. Although stockpiling food is an excellent idea, it’s also great to have a plan for what happens if the emergency situation extends longer than a stockpile will last. Fishing and hunting outdoor gear, in this situation, will prove very valuable.
Prev pinner: This guy is an instructor of self sustainability. Lots to see at his site. Love his explanations of the ‘hows and whys of his home design. -interested in building my own home eventually.
For personnel who are flying over large bodies of water, in additional to wearing a survival suit over cold water, a survival kit may have additional items such as flotation vests, sea anchor, fishing nets, fishing equipment, fluorescent sea marking dye, pyrotechnical signals, a survival radio and/or radio-beacon, formerly a distress marker light replaced by a flashing strobe, formerly a seawater still or chemical desalinator kit now replaced by a hand pumped reverse osmosis desalinator (MROD) for desalinating seawater, a raft repair kit, a paddle, a bailer and sponge, sunscreen, medical equipment, a whistle, a compass, and a sun shade hat.
• Advanced: A battery can be used to create a spark to light tinder. Use your vehicle battery (removed from vehicle or boat) by attaching wires or steel wool to connect the positive and negative posts. This will induce a spark or ignite the wool. With smaller batteries, align two batteries together, positive to negative. Use strands of steel wool to connect the posts to create a spark and ignite wool. A 9-volt battery works great.

Of course, every survivalist is different and has different needs. Thus, no two survival gear stockpiles or survival kits will look the same. Some will undoubtedly want to stay away from purchasing battery or electricity dependent gear, for instance, while others will want to go the hyper-minimalist route, only buying what they think they will really need (and perhaps be able to carry in a single backpack). Don’t feel pressured into extending your list of survival gear by buying something you don’t really think you’ll use. Instead, scan this list for items that you might have forgotten or think would really compliment your needs as a survivalist.
