A truly unique travel knife, this is one piece of survival gear you can’t live without. About the size of your standard credit card, it unfolds to reveal a sharp blade and comfortable, non-slip gripping handle that lets you slice, cut or chop your way through even the toughest materials.
Be aware that a rain storm in a dry canyon system can bring flash flooding — so better to make your shelter on higher ground. At the same time, camping along a river bank, especially in the spring time, can also be dangerous — if rains fall in the nearby mountains, and as snow melts from the previous winter’s accumulation, flash flooding can take place. Better to camp up on higher ground in this case as well.
These are some excellent tips for sure! I will definitely be making separate B.O.B., home, car, etc. articles, but I wanted to have one that was just a huge list of kit people may have missed out on using with regards to just everything all at once. I know it’s a bit of a mess, but still hope it’s helpful to some to have the suggestions like this (a.k.a. all in one place). But yes! Definitely a good idea to have separation, which I will definitely do (eventually) with some new articles.
For your convenience, the Voile Strap is available in 9-, 15-, and 25-inch lengths. You can never buy just one tactical voile strap, so, we’re now offering it in a package of two.  If anything is better than duct tape, it’s the Voile Strap. Made of tough-stretch polyurethane and a tough nylon buckle, Voile Straps have endless uses. You should a…
There are, but using them responsibly is an option, too. Crack open a window and do not leave it on for prolonged periods of time and *never* without monitoring it. Have a carbon monoxide alarm that will go off to be more cautious. Best if used in a garage with great ventilation. They’re still helpful, but yes, please use responsibly if you do use them. (We and many other people used them indoors without issue).
High power LED light (able to have batteries replaced, and carry an extra battery), white lens, with signaling capabilities. Strobe versions are available for some lights. Use lithium cells only, due to superior shelf life.
Wes Baumann is a National Forest Service Trail Team member, a forest fire first responder, a search and rescue volunteer. Wes is also a native Oregonian and this past summer fought the Eagle Creek fire, near Hood River. He lives on his farm in Parkdale, OR with his fiancee and goats. You list a saw as an item/tool for the Leatherman Wingman Multi Tool under the Top 10 Multi Purpose Survival Tools. As far as I can tell, the Wingman does not come equipped with a saw. The next comparable model with a saw would be the Sidekick.
Watch this video documentary filmed during the siege of Sarajevo #Bosnia in 1993 on March 8th cease fire on the streets of Sarajevo people gifted fake flowers. Pay attention to the kid from 3m 5s to 3m 30s to see what war can do to you. #shtf #IWD2018https://vimeo.com/73843486
They just did the same thing to me. Charged me $39.95 for a membership I did not agree to. It is bull when she says they give you a notice about this. Never got one never agreed to one and do not want one. Have bought several items from them but will no longer purchase anything from them ever again
A “Dry Top Super Heavy Duty Tarp” on the other hand is a lot more tear resistant than any backpacking tent that I’ve seen. If you carry a couple of these of varying sizes you can assemble a survival shelter rather quickly. You’ll have to learn how to build a simple shelter first of course, which you can do using a nearby tree, rope, and a stick or two you find on the ground. A tarp shelter is easily camouflaged with brush — should you need to stay hidden for any period of time.
I agree with you. 90% of the people who think they will survive from any list will be sorely mistaken. They will die. This list or any other list is a reference for people to think about. Without a doubt there are other items people will regret not having. Duplication of item is not wasteful, but resourceful. If something or is lost then you have a backup. A list is just a list. Using the items on a list, repeatedly, will give ‘brain’ muscle memory. You can not go out and buy a gun, and expect to know how to use it if you have never practiced. I have been an avid backpacker for decades; often traveling alone in the back country. I know how to use my equipment very well. I don’t have to ‘think’ about how to use my equipment.
I like what it has for the price, this kit has the essentials for a family facing an emergency situation ~ including a few things I might not have though of. I like the fact that there is room in the bags to add personal items like shoes or clothes. When the kit arrived, one of the pieces was damaged, and the company was incredibly responsive in sending a replacement, I was most happy with the service.
I was curious to know how anybody can store radio waves in a bracelet (or anything else), but Walchle was unable to be much help. Very hush hush, he implied. The Department of Defense is testing this technology and the bracelets for military applications. Who in the DOD specifically? And where? He could not tell me because of security issues. “Maybe I can get a letter from them just acknowledging they’re looking into it,” he said.

FireLaces are one of those pieces of gear you can wear every day. These are shoelaces with mini Ferro rods at the ends. Just loop the striker into the laces, and you’re shoes become a survival tool in their own right.
It’s a massive list for those who’d like to check their own self-made kits off in comparison to something comprehensive – to see if there’s anything they’ve missed that they may have wanted to take if only they’d remembered it.
Good point! I definitely need to add the pool shock to the list, and entertainment in general needs a separate category methinks! There are lots of little things you can have at home that would help with that (Bananagrams comes to mind too, for instance, especially for just at home and not taking it in a pack or anything).

Water: Though boiling and distilling are methods for safe drinking water, you can’t always rely on these methods, especially if you’re in a hurry and have to get out of a dangerous area or through hostile territory. You are going to want a way to quickly filter water and make it safe to drink.
The Z Spike accessory the Crovel Extreme III and Crovel Tactical can be used for a number of survival applications. Instructions for Z Spike: To attach the Z Spike accessory for the Crovel Extreme III or Crovel Tactical use a screwdriver or coin (quarter) to unscrew plug out of hammerhead end of Crovel. A cautionary note about that pool shock: it is extremely hazardous (once opened)…it’ll eat through metals and (some) plastics and should be kept from moisture because that is what ‘activates’ it…wear gloves (the right kind), get an MSDS (manufacturer’s safety data sheet) from the internet and store it AWAY from your food supplies. If there are curious little ones in the vicinity, make sure you keep it locked up.

Can’t believe I missed this comment! Just took a look at the stove and it looks great! Want to get my hands on one to test it out. Looks like it would do absolutely perfectly as a backup/emergency stove. Thanks so much for recommending it, Darlene!

A miniature flashlight can be carried on you for use in any emergency or other required need. This Streamlight 73001 can be carried on a keychain, backpack or even a belt loop on your pants or a zipper on your jacket and there when you need it. It’s an extremely small flashlight with an LED light — meaning lots of run time — using small button cell batteries (and during a long term emergency, carrying an excess of these tiny batteries will not take up much space and only weigh a few ounces, if that.)

  1. It began more than seven years ago with a broken watchband, which Walchle fixed using paracord. The woven band got him some attention in his hometown of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., so he started making watchbands, then bracelets, and selling them on eBay.
