If you wade through a cold river (rivers are common in many wilderness areas), or find yourself suddenly in the rain and need to get a fire going quickly — get this fire going using a micro torch. You can even cook, right from the torch.
Needless to say, he slapped on the seal body and set out on his way. The Vikings used to use seals for sleeping bags, clothes and ropes, so we suppose it’s not too outrageous – although they did do a fair bit of pillaging as well, and we’re not so on board with that.
Too much of either one can be harmful, if not fatal to your body. If you’re dehydrated, do not eat anything until you’ve had water because the food will only absorb the remaining water in your body and cause you to be dehydrated even more. Drinking too much water can also mess up your metabolism and cause lots of complications long term. Always make sure you have enough of both food and water.

More popularly known as paracord bracelets (because they’re made from the same material as military issued parachutes and equipment), these bands are more than just accessories. They’re actually cords that are woven together, which you can unravel and use partly whenever you need the cords to tie stuff up. Almost every single piece of the paracord bracelet is usable string – right to the small threads that are used to keep the end of the cords together. Use them to tie stuff, hang food, set up traps, and even as tinder to start fires.
Glow sticks can be life savers in survival situations. These are small sticks that are filled with a chemical substance that emits light when mechanical shock triggers a chemical reaction. I am sure you must have seen them at parties and such, but they are of great value to a survivalist.
Your list is pretty good and pretty comprehensive. However, it seems a bit all over the the map. Maybe some further breakdown of home/car/BOB would be in order. Right now, my home and car kits are good, but I’m browsing the web for ideas on more or better gear for my BOB. And as I’m browsing through your list I see…
Previously here on NicheHacks.com I had a much nicer looking layout on the home page but bounce rate was high so I added double column posts and bounce rate dropped significantly. It doesn’t look as nice but that’s not what is important.

I am doing a research project for school, and one of the things I’m doing is finding some of the survival items that might have been used by the ancient Greeks. Though a lot of the items listed here are modern, I found this website to be a huge help!

• Let the air flow: The purpose of this shelter is to create shade. Use available material such as bark, leaves, a poncho, an emergency sleeping bag or blanket or any available fabric to cover one side.
Okay, we know, this is getting a bit ridiculous now. Bear Grylls is a pretty odd guy sometimes. You have to admit though, using a dead seal as a wetsuit isn’t quite as ridiculous as dying because you refused to use a dead seal as a wetsuit.
Most can see that YouTube is scrubbing videos and deleting accounts that don’t tow the line and parrot the mainstream media and government’s official timeline of events for things. And it’s getting worse by the day, it seems.
• Dew: Dew collects on plants and grasses. Using a cloth or piece of clothing soak up the dew and then squeeze it into a container. This can be a very effective method of collecting a considerable amount of water.
I’m going to attempt to express how grateful I am to this amazing group of people. I’ve just gotten back from a 10-day tour with Lungs and Limbs, who contacted me at the end of July and asked if I’d be interested in traveling with them up to Oregon and Washington for some shows. All I had to do was hop in the bus (pictured) with a bunch of strangers and hope that they weren’t too creepy/inconsiderate/angry/mean/sketchy for me to handle for 10 days. Fortunately, they’re so much more awesome than I would have ever hoped for! Lungs and Limbs are a group of laid-back, friendly, funny, intelligent, talented people who are excellent conversationalists (bonus on those long drives). They took a chance on me as well, inviting me into their home on the road, and I’m so thankful that they did. This tour made me feel like I was back in my natural habitat: traveling the open road in a big ol’ vehicle with a group of friends who become like family. We stayed at truck stops in the bus, slept on floors, made a Crossfit gym our home for a few days (thanks, Travis!), played an outdoor show in the rain, drank lots of coffee and met lots of great and/or wacky people. I would do it again in a second, so hopefully we’ll figure out getting Survival Guide and Lungs and Limbs back on the road together sometime next year. Love you, L&L!! You’re the best! And all of your songs are stuck in my head on repeat. ❤️
Survival models can be usefully viewed as ordinary regression models in which the response variable is time. However, computing the likelihood function (needed for fitting parameters or making other kinds of inferences) is complicated by the censoring. The likelihood function for a survival model, in the presence of censored data, is formulated as follows. By definition the likelihood function is the conditional probability of the data given the parameters of the model. It is customary to assume that the data are independent given the parameters. Then the likelihood function is the product of the likelihood of each datum. It is convenient to partition the data into categories: uncensored, left censored, right censored, and interval censored. These are denoted unc., l.c., r.c., and i.c. in the equation below.
Self-defense is a fundamental human right. I’m not willing to relinquish that right, no matter how many tragedies occur in this crazy world. No many how many wicked or insane persons use guns to do evil, I will assert my … Continue reading →

Throughout our lives we use acronyms to learn and remember a variety of things. From NASA to AWOL to SEALs, we certainly do love our acronyms. When it comes to survival there’s a wealth of acronyms to help you be as prepared as possible. Take, for example, PACE. Typically pace is a word that’s more at home in the realm of car racing or running, but in the survival world, PACE is a way of making sure you’re ready for whatever the world has to throw at you. This can be a bug-out plan, a get-home plan, or a home-defense plan. Whatever type of prepping or survival plan you’re thinking o… Continue Reading →
Survival kits, in a variety of sizes, contain supplies and tools to provide a survivor with basic shelter against the elements, help him or her to keep warm, meet basic health and first aid needs, provide food and water, signal to rescuers, and assist in finding the way back to help. Supplies in a survival kit normally contain a knife (often a Swiss army knife or a multi-tool), matches, tinder, first aid kit, bandana, fish hooks, sewing kit, and a flashlight.
A man in Seattle has had his gun confiscated by police after breaking no laws. The police took his gun without a warrant and without pressing any charges. Tyranny has officially taken hold on American soil.
In a situation where there is a moderate to severe societal collapse, such as extensive civil unrest or major natural disaster (Katrina situation maybe?), and you have to scavenge for supplies, possibly with lesser regard to law; look at the billboards! Many of them are topped with solar panels about 3’X3′. And you’ll KNOW they also have the wiring and battery packs on board.
Don’t fight the tide. Shock waves from the back of the crowd will push you forward—do not fight them. Stopping is the quickest way to fall, and falling is the quickest way to die. Instead, “wait for the surge to come, go with it, and move sideways. Keep moving with it and sideways, with it and sideways,” says Edwin Galea, a crowd behavior specialist at the University of Greenwich.
