Not my personal “go to” weapon of choice, but I’m also not a tactical pen-wielding master. I’ve seen videos on tactical pens being used for self-defense, and they are lethal in the right set of hands.

It sounds dumb, but many people can’t understand directions when lost. is important for any survivalist to be able to tell directions even when the sun is not available for reference. There are many little clues in nature that can help you find the North. Here are some great examples.

Don’t listen to Frankenstein’s monster: Fire is amazing, and it could determine how comfortable your stay at the Le Castaway Inn is. Starting a fire enables you to stay warm, cook, dry clothing, fend off wildlife, purify water and signal for help.
This signal is literally a lifesaver, so you need to know how to do it in both light and sound. The signal is represented by three dots followed by three dashes, followed by three more dots. In sound, this means having three quick taps followed by three slow taps, and then three more quick taps. The same can be applied to using light signals. Make sure you practice this before you go out there.
I’ve taken the time to organize the gear into different categories for your convenience: to make browsing much easier. Check out the list and tell us if there’s anything you think you should add to your own personal list of survival gear!
That website also talks about how Ryan is NOT a prepper. He isn’t. He openly talks about how he created SurvivalLife as he recognised it as a fanatical niche where there was lots of money to be made not because he was interested in the niche.
There are many different situations that could lead to a survival scenario, and any of them could happen to you. It’s not always the extreme skier that’s gone off course or the trail runner that’s been injured in the middle of the wilderness. Your vacation tour group may have accidentally left you behind. Or maybe your car has simply run out of gas on a desolate stretch of wintery road. The question isn’t whether you could find yourself alone or stranded in a potentially life-threatening situation. It’s whether you’d be equipped to deal with it.
I wanted to get into commercial photography, but I didn’t know where to start. This workshop gave me the tools and inspiration I needed. It taught me so much about the business-side of commercial photography and how to market myself; however, the most valuable thing I took away is that your photography has to say something about who you are as an artist.

The resins from pine trees are very useful if you reduce them into tiny shavings. They easily catch fire and can therefore be used as an easy to find ingredient to starting fires because the can be found practically everywhere. But what makes them special is that the smoke that’s produced from burning the shaved fat wood makes effective mosquito repellents. This is one of many perfect scenarios where carrying a survival knife makes complete sense. Here is our guide to best survival knife in the market based on various field tests and expert opinions.

(1930’s watering corn during great depression) This weekly post is an open-forum, though preferably focusing on what we all did this week for our prepping & preparedness. Comment and voice your thoughts, opinions, accomplishments, concerns, or questions for others on any general topic of preparedness. Lurkers? Let’s hear from …
Good info, app not so much I really like the info provided by the guide. The app however is (a little) outdated. Also the guide could be a bit more optimized for mobile screens by editing the HTML in the webview. But good job making it available (offline) for devices in the first place.
I read SurvivalBlog daily and SHTFPlan occasionally. along with a few others. Your list turned me on to yet others of which I had previously been unaware. Thank you for that. With all this good info available, one could spend their entire waking hours reading prepping sites and gathering information. So here’s my question: If you spend all your time reading about prepping, when do you find time to actually do anything?
“We are the party that adheres to the Constitution. We will not let the liberals tread on the Second Amendment! We will fight to defend the entire Bill of Rights. We will stand up against excessive government power wherever we see it. We cannot and will not allow any President to act as if he were a king. We will not let any President use executive orders to impinge on the Second Amendment.” – Senator Rand Paul. from the Tea Party Response to 2013 State of the Union Address February 12, 2013
I wrote Gardening in a Failed Economy after spending three summers working on gardens that can be made just about any were, using junk that you can scrounge by the side of the road, or at the local recycling place. the idea is that as the long term economy gets worse people, especially old people are going to have a hard time affording food (or any thing else for that matter). The book isn’t some cut and paste Internet BS, it is 3 years of my life, I proud of it, and I’m willing to put my money were my mouth is.
Whether it’s a time around the corner or it’s simply today, if you’re a recreational hiker or hunter, a signal flare gun (and extra flares) can help you be found when others are searching for you. When you shop for an Orion 12 Gauge HP Red Signal Kit purchase a few flares as back-up.
– Intel – I just started using my old $80 Kindel to put my documents on (PDF) kind of a great idea – it also lightens the load. A great book to have – The BSA’s Field Manual (not the promotion stuff, the camping, first aid, survival stuff). At the end of the day, I want something a kid can understand…
If you’re out of water and, crucially, still somewhat hydrated, drinking your own urine can keep you alive. This is because relatively clear urine will hydrate you, but if it’s brown and thick, it’s just waste and won’t help at all.
Global stocks plunge after Wall Street bloodbath. The Dow is now down around 8% from its all-time high. Just as I predicted, rising interest rates are what precipitated the plunge. To repeat my words of warning: Many stocks are still over-valued. Interest rates will probably continue to rise. So do some hedging and put stop-loss limits in place!
Previously here on NicheHacks.com I had a much nicer looking layout on the home page but bounce rate was high so I added double column posts and bounce rate dropped significantly. It doesn’t look as nice but that’s not what is important.
Army Ranger Handbook (2011) – I picked this manual up at a gun show a few years ago it’s loaded with info on demolitions, booby traps, communications, patrolling, movement, battle drills, combat intelligence and other info.
