Hello! I would just like to add that I think that radiation pills, or Potassium Iodide pills, should be included on the list for prepping, and planning, just in case we go into a nuclear war. It may not help in the denser areas of radiation, but as its spreading throughout the country, it will prevent the heaviest symptoms.

I notice you have one of the Gerber BG knives pictured. I own several Gerber’s including one of the BG folders I received as a gift, it’s buried in the bottom of my Bug Out Bag. If I ever need it, it’ll be there but I don’t want anyone to think I’d advertise for that idiot Bear. I always have a 3″ folding trapper in my pocket and a KBAR USMC fighter in the BOB along with an older well warn Barlow. You can’t have too many good tools and a good knife is a great tool.

Hey, Todd! Yeah it’s a crazy list for sure. Took forever to compile! Definitely don’t expect anyone to look up every single item recommendation, I’d expect people to just check the items they have off the list and then maybe look at some recommendations for items they don’t have or don’t have much experience with.

An alternative to building a single survival tree is to build many survival trees, where each tree is constructed using a sample of the data, and average the trees to predict survival. This is the method underlying the survival random forest models. Survival random forest analysis is available in the R package randomForestSRC.

Censoring / Censored observation: If a subject does not have an event during the observation time, they are described as censored. subject is censored in the sense that nothing is observed or known about that subject after the time of censoring. If you have two mirrors, you can use the reflection from one mirror as a light source and reflect it from the second mirror. This enables you to signal north even if there is no sun present there to reflect light.

How exactly do you get a fire going big enough to get people running though? This ingenious Bear Grylls survival tip tells you exactly that… using only the materials from your survival first aid kit and survival gear.

The aluminium blankets or sheets added to your shelter will significantly increase your shelter’s heat retention capacity. Aluminium facing outward of the shelter can also reflect sunlight, allowing you to stay cooler under the shelter. Among the survivalist community, these are referred to as super shelters, and rightfully so.

Most everyone loves fire. Fire is essential in a wilderness survival situation for a few reasons. One, it provides warmth which keeps body temperature up. Two, it provides heat used to purify water. It also provides light, heat to cook food, and serves as a center to draw people in. Earth based wisdom teaches us that fire is a spirit unto itself, and encourages us to have a good relationship with fire. I know that despite my passion for it, I didn’t truly appreciate fire until it took me four days to get it with a fully primitive bow and drill fire making kit on my first wilderness survival solo.

The first line item. More than one source. Energy is energy. It does not go away. Gas in your car is burned making you go. Solar rays, can be used to generator electricity and/or to generate heat. So, a system that captures heat. Can turn the heat into steam, the steam into a motor- which spins a generator. Vice a solar panel into electricity. Sources can be the City generator electrical power (or steam etc). Diesel motors can be modified or purchased to run on more than one type of fuel. (Diesel, NPG, LPG, Propane)… Or if you have a water source a water wheel…. Multiple sources. How to spin the generator.

Be aware that a rain storm in a dry canyon system can bring flash flooding — so better to make your shelter on higher ground. At the same time, camping along a river bank, especially in the spring time, can also be dangerous — if rains fall in the nearby mountains, and as snow melts from the previous winter’s accumulation, flash flooding can take place. Better to camp up on higher ground in this case as well.

Fess up. Tell your doctor how needles make you feel; she might have you lie down to avert wooziness. (Seriously, make sure you tell the truth—here are some common lies patients tell their doctors all the time.)

The constant fear mongering after every shooting has people pushed to two extremes.  The first group cowers in manufactured fear at the feet of the government demanding more ink on paper to protect them. The second group gear up to protect themselves.

From survivalism to self defense, in case of an emergency or imminent threat, having the tools and skills needed to protect and keep yourself and your family safe, can be the difference between perishing and surviving.

Survival kits, in a variety of sizes, contain supplies and tools to provide a survivor with basic shelter against the elements, help him or her to keep warm, meet basic health and first aid needs, provide food and water, signal to rescuers, and assist in finding the way back to help. Supplies in a survival kit normally contain a knife (often a Swiss army knife or a multi-tool), matches, tinder, first aid kit, bandana, fish hooks, sewing kit, and a flashlight.

I wrote Gardening in a Failed Economy after spending three summers working on gardens that can be made just about any were, using junk that you can scrounge by the side of the road, or at the local recycling place. the idea is that as the long term economy gets worse people, especially old people are going to have a hard time affording food (or any thing else for that matter). The book isn’t some cut and paste Internet BS, it is 3 years of my life, I proud of it, and I’m willing to put my money were my mouth is.

In subsequent chapters, the book describes weapons and combat techniques, places of safety, and how to survive a zombie-infested world. In the section describing weapons, Brooks writes about the human body: If cared for and trained properly, is the greatest weapon on earth.[4] The guide concludes with a fictional list of documented zombie encounters throughout history. The oldest entry is 60,000 BC, in Katanda, Central Africa, although the author expresses doubt about its validity. Instead, he presents evidence from 3,000 B.C. in Ancient Egypt as the first verifiable instance of a zombie outbreak. The most recent entry is 2002, in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Some of these encounters make reference to historical events, such as Roanoke Island.

The uses for a portable solar generator system are many. A few solar panels and a corresponding ‘solar generator’ (built-in battery storage, power inverter, controls & connectors) might be used for any number of purposes. Note that most ‘solar generator’ systems can also be charged up by simply plugging into …

I discovered Mr. Rawles’ site a couple years ago, and you are correct! It is fantastic, but I am glad to learn about more sites, though I do visit SHTF often. Not strictly survival sites, but fantastic for financial/economic information, I highly recommend http://www.zerohedge.com and http://www.dollarcollapse.com and also for all the news that is fit (or not) to print, http://www.rense.com. There are not enough hours in the day for me to read all the wonderful information on the internet.

Here for the first time and am glad I came. I have designed and built my own off grid home and existence in southern Colorado (solar powered) but have yet to create my own food supply (aquaponic) in the future or survival preparation to the extent I hope to in the near future. Thanks so much for all the site info and looking forward to your eBook and newsletter.

It’s a good idea to have a compass with you at all times, but if not then what? Get old school and use the stars– it’s a lot easier than you think. Also, keep note of rivers, paths or mountains- following these can lead to roads and civilization.
Moving my home to the “country” was less about lower property taxes, empty nest syndrome, and proximity to wineries than about avoiding more populated areas and enabling greater security in the event of a major event. Adding a fence and planting lots of blackberry, raspberry, and rose bushes around the perimeter of my property was less about “curb appeal” than about slowing down potential intruders.
