If you don’t have a lighter or any matches, you will have to start the fire by hand. If you find enough tinder (small material, such as dry grass, feathers or bark shavings, that burns easily) you can usually use the energy from the sun to start a fire with a magnifying glass, a lens from your glasses, a piece of broken glass, a cover to a watch or compass, or other clear, light-intensifying objects. It is very difficult to start a fire by friction; your best bet is to carry a variety of fire-starting implements.

By James Ballou Preppers, as a general rule, tend to be people with initiative. We take it upon ourselves to prepare for the uncertain future. This is a pro-active attitude that aims to leave as … Continue Reading about Training and Education for The Self-Reliant Prepper

This multi functional survival tool is a must have for any individual to have in their survival kit.  It is light weight and compact but has the ability to start a fire in any weather condition.  The magnesium stick will put off sparks at 3000 degrees Celcius and with ability to handle ove..

• Double half hitch: Used to attach one end of a rope around an object. This is a useful knot for building a shelter. Tie a half hitch around your object, like a tree or pole, and follow it by a second in the same direction to make it a double. Pull tight to make secure.

Housing prices in the United States continue to rise at unprecedented rates forcing many into poverty.  This worsening epidemic is explained well in a video by The Money GPS and it’s been engineered this way.

In the real world, economic collapse won’t necessarily present itself overnight, and for those who don’t want to live in the woods, being able to transfer large sums of wealth from one country to another is a perfectly viable option. Obviously, for bartering, silver, alcohol, cigarettes, toilet paper, etc. are better options. Gold should just be viewed as a sort of insurance policy for monetary collapse, not for teotwawki.

This knife is by far one of the best products on this site! It is unbelievably sturdy, and holds an edge once you put it on. The blade is wicked, and the saw blade does its job. ( I built a shelter in 15 minutes with all the saplings I sawed with it). The sheath is heavy duty plastic, and will surpass your expectations. There is not a time when I do not have this thing on me when I’m outdoors. A trusty companion, at truly a remarkable price. If you are reading this review, I urge you to take out your credit card, and add this fine piece of steel to your bugout bag, camping pack, or collection!!

I purchased 3 of these (one for each car glovebox)…its a handy little kit, but one of the flashlights didn’t work (no, not just the battery) and when I contacted the seller directly, I received no response…disappointing

It should be bright: Of course, a tactical flashlight should be bright. However, too much brightness can be dangerous in the wild. It may spook wildlife or can catch the attention of the predators. Make sure that your flashlight has adjustable light output.

Look, I had to include one big-baller survival tool, and it’s appropriate that it’s by Leatherman. This bracelet carries the Leatherman promise of quality (let’s note that 25-year guarantee again) but it also serves as a kickass and manly bracelet. A goddamn steel-tread bracelet. Wear it to the bar, wear it to work, wear it camping, wear it while you bone-down. Just, uh, be careful with that last one. That’s because this bracelet contains 29 screwdriver and wrench tools, along with a cutting hook, a bottle opener and even a sim card tool and glass breaker. Now that’s fashion.

I’ve called their customer service, and it’s hit-or-miss on being helpful. I canceled my membership when they persisted that I was not a member, despite regular monthly billing. They were finally able to find it, but I thought I could do better with my money elsewhere. The things they sell are not cheaper than the same items elsewhere online when you add in the $19.95 a month charge.

Learning how to make your own makeup not only saves money, it saves your skin from the nasty chemicals so many cosmetics feature. There are numerous organic options available these days; however, learning to make your own foundation, lip gloss and eyeliner is pretty darn nifty. It’s also handy in the event of a zombie apocalypse that includes the total destruction of your mak… Continue Reading →

If all you can have is this in your pocket and some survival knowledge, you r good to go!!! Its tightly packed inside but you do have a little space for some purifications tablets, a 5 inch paracord, an extra shaving blade, a few matches, pain killers and antibiotics, three bandaids. The knife works well too but i removed the battery for the LED and kept it in the storage incase it leaks. One other thing, tape up the compass glass as the curved glass is high enough to scrap against anything you keep the kit on. A Recommended Purchase…

Redundancy in the wilderness is your friends: always have extra knives, compasses, water gathering tools, and fire starting tools. surviving is all about making sure you have secured basic necessities to cook, stay warm, and self-defend.

Excellent list I have most of them on the list. The Army Manuals I have in hard copy. One great thing about serving in special operations is that you have open access to all the field manuals that you can carry. I agree with every one on the list. Great post.

First, bring your brain empty so we can cram it full of business and marketing information! You will also need to bring your most up-to-date portfolio, your BEST of the BEST work, so you can have a one-on-one portfolio review with John, as well as group peer reviews on Day 2. We will be providing you a designed workbook to accompany the lectures, so don’t worry about bringing a notebook. Cameras and other artist implements are not needed, though not discouraged if you would like to bring them along.

If you go with tarp, buy yourself three or four measuring 10×12 or a bit larger. With a few tarps you can build yourself a small shelter that is sealed and insect proof, nearly as well as a tent. With some duct tape (to tape tarp edges) or a heavy duty sewing needle and thread you can stitch together a shelter made of tarp in no time.

China’s threat to Taiwan is ratcheting up fears of a third world war. A comment by the Chinese government saying they will “never tolerate Taiwanese independence” has prompted fears an all-out invasion is imminent.

  1. It is a good idea to wear them on a regular basis especially if you are camping or going for a road trip. They may not be ideal to wear every day on your day job, but they sure are worth the investment.
When it comes to the blogosphere there always seems to be a group of blogs, like individuals, that stand out from the crowd and provide great content and a lot of influence. In the survival and preparedness community this is no exception.
Then there’s the Lifestraw Portable Water Filter that comes in at just under $22; it’s not only a great portable water filter with a proven track record, it’s a Time Magazine Invention of the Year Winner on top of that. It’s been used by both backpackers and relief agencies in third world countries alike. It weighs only 2 ounces and is a perfect tool for extreme survival situations like wilderness survival as well as a tool for providing water safe to drink during an evacuation of a widespread disaster. It has a very simple construction with no moving parts — which means less chances of equipment breakdown.
