Whether it’s a time around the corner or it’s simply today, if you’re a recreational hiker or hunter, a signal flare gun (and extra flares) can help you be found when others are searching for you. When you shop for an “Orion 12 Gauge HP Red Signal Kit” purchase a few flares as back-up.
I ordered this, was in a but one, get one free deal. I received 1, small plastic magnifier. I replied, no reply. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING!!!! They are a real scam on the nwtwork!!! They do not tell the truth at all! I have asked them for something, with no reply, they are…

Anything with both the words “multi” and “tool” in it is worth having a look at. There are a great many options for multitools – focus on weight and practicality when looking. Are you going to really NEED the one with the allen key and corkscrew? Stick to the basics of a straight blade, saw, and can opener (like this one here) and add what few other options you see fit. Some bonus items that are rarely thought about are a magnifying glass and USB stick. These come on some multitools and can be used to start fires and store important family records, respectively. If you want to learn more about choosing the right multitool for survival, you can check out our article here.
Forti’s kit of choice is a bit larger and bulkier, but not overbearingly so. It can be worn on a belt in a pouch and includes enough gear to make a longer “unplanned wilderness excursion” survivable with some modicum of basic comfort.
I agree with Mike in his statement that United Cutlery is a very substandard company. Also, the ONLY decent quality hollow handle survival knife that I’ve seen is made by Randall and costs several hundred dollars. I would never choose a hollow, storage handle knife for main line survival purposes. You are definitely best off purchasing a quality carbon steel blade by Ontario, Camillus, Becker, Cold Steel, etc. Also, while some stainless steel alloys are excellent for knife blades, generally speaking they are subpar when compared to carbon steel. Rust is not an issue to those who know how to maintain a blade and good carbon steel has far superior edge holding ability.
In arctic or alpine areas, survival kits may have additional cold weather clothing (winter hats and gloves), sleeping bags, chemical “hand warmer” packets, sun glasses/snow goggles, snowshoes, a collapsible shovel, a snare wire for small animals, a frying pan, a camp stove, camp stove fuel, a space blanket, matches, a whistle, a compass, tinder, medical equipment, a flint strike, a wire saw, extra socks and a tent designed for arctic use.
Earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes can cause you to leave your home or even be trapped there. Roads could be blocked due to fallen trees, power lines, or even damaged earth from the natural disaster. Rescue crews can not be in all places at once. You may have to wait it out for quite a while before its over. You won’t be able to go to the store or to the corner market.
Arugula, Slow Bolt – 500 Seeds. Includes many expensive strains such as Asparagus, Yolo Wonder Pepper and Big Max Pumpkin! Lettuce, Iceberg – 1200 Seeds. Celery, Utah 52-70 – 3,500 Seeds. Asparagus…
I LOVE it! My 4 Person Premium Survival Kit is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered! In these critical times, hard to deal with (2 Tim. 3:1-5), it is imperative to be prepared for whatever calamity may strike at any given time, and my kit helps me to do just that. I received ALL the items noted–including the flashlight lol–and there are PLENTY of supplies! As the description further notes, there is plenty of room for personal effects, i.e., medicine, food, clothing, etc. I also like the fact that each bag can assist TWO people–so if another person is in need, I can help them too. This kit is an EXAMPLE for other kits to follow.
Those who get offended by you promoting something even though you’re giving them a ton of value upfront and for ‘free’ (it’s not really ‘free’ to create content, takes up a lot of time, effort and sometimes money) are probably not the sort of people you want as your audience anyway.
At the push of a button, PLBs from companies like ACR Electronics Inc. transmit your position via GPS coordinates and the 406 MHz radio frequency to search-and-rescue centers, who may be able to then start a search process within minutes.
In July 2013, I purchased the wide Survival Bracelet with the stainless screw pin closure for my boyfriend’s birthday. Brandon is a firefighter with the Citizens Fire Department in Lock Haven, PA. Brandon is a former Fire Chief of the Bald Eagle Fire Company. He is currently a volunteer fireman at Citizens on his spare time and a part time driver with the department when needed. Brandon and I started dating 7 months ago, and I was and still am very clueless about the world of “firefighting.” When Brandon moved from Bald Eagle to Lock Haven with my children and me, he was very hesitant to join another company because he knew how demanding the firehouse is and how dangerous it can be. Knowing his passion and love for it, I gave him my full support to go and do what he loves and was born to do. Two months into being with the Citizens he has excelled from a volunteer firefighter to a driver as well as being a full time dispatcher with 911 and a part time dispatcher with Penn State University. He saves many lives day in and day out, and I’m forever thankful for the survival strap to have saved his life.
Any clue as to how much this would all weigh, should one have to carry the items on thier backs? This is a fairly large list, and some of the items could be this, OR this, OR this… A few things to add or coment about:
According to the Survival Life website, membership to the Lamplighter society provides an easy, practical way of obtaining information related to survival preparedness, without having to spend years of trial and error. With this in mind, membership is claimed to provide the following benefits:
A survival kit is something most hikers, hunters, and explorers will never break open. It will sit in the bottom of a backpack, potentially for years, encased in a waterproof vessel of some sort, lightweight and out of the way.

I understand that you’re going to expand the tools listing…may I suggest you research either homesteading sites or sustainability sites because without the tools to plant, harvest, and store their garden produce and the seeds (either saved or in form of a survival seed cache) necessary to replenish their food stores, a lot of people will be in trouble after that first year or two or three on their own passes. Not to mention the learning curve and the skills needed for those activities.

I can’t afford a personal locator beacon. I had to settle for a lifejacket strobe light that can be seen even in the daylight. It runs on 2 AA rechargeable batteries. Amazon has several different kinds available.
Starting fires with a mischmetal flint in a dry climate is easy, but in wet weather, you may need a cigarette lighter and some flammable helpers to get your fire going. Cotton balls covered in wax, solid backpacking stove tablets, or a flask of Bacardi 151 are all viable options.
The US government’s Homeland Security website provides a list of in-home emergency kit items.[9] The list focuses on the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and materials to maintain body warmth. There are a lot of portable water filters on the market. A popular brand can do a good job filtering water and withstand long term use, but they can be both clunky and expensive, well over $100, with several parts that need to be fitted together.

The Survival Straps website is excellent, and there is far more information on the site than I can convey in this short column. The wrist straps are just the tip of the Survival Straps product line, which includes lanyards, key chains, watch straps, belts, and even dog collars. Wrist strap prices start at $24.95, and go up based upon the options selected.
In a telephone conversation, Kurt Walchle, who founded Survival Straps about eight years ago, gave me this explanation of the technology “embedded” in his bracelets: About a year ago we partnered with the Navy Seal Foundation and a couple of their guys got in touch and said, ‘Guys you really need to take a look at this technology,’ so we were introduced to this InBalance Technology company. InBalance Technology is a company set up by a scientist guy. So we get together and they are in the middle of military testing but they were looking for a delivery device for the commercial market so we got together and tested it, so that’s kind of how we hooked up.
