Before you pick a campsite and start navigating through the natural world, it’s crucial to plan the perfect backpack full of the stuff you’ll need to survive. But “roughing it” doesn’t have to mean “suffering”. In this chapter, we’ll help you identify the essential tools, gadgets and clothing items that come in handy when living in the outdoors.

Although there is no way to precisely judge things like how long can you go without water or how long can you survive cold, there are some good estimates. One of my personal favorites is the rule of the threes. It gives you a very broad idea of some calculations that can help you in a survival situation. The rule goes as follows.

Then there’s the Lifestraw Portable Water Filter that comes in at just under $22; it’s not only a great portable water filter with a proven track record, it’s a Time Magazine Invention of the Year Winner on top of that. It’s been used by both backpackers and relief agencies in third world countries alike. It weighs only 2 ounces and is a perfect tool for extreme survival situations like wilderness survival as well as a tool for providing water safe to drink during an evacuation of a widespread disaster. It has a very simple construction with no moving parts — which means less chances of equipment breakdown.

One of those basic survival skills is eating! Well roughing it, dry rations and freeze dried meals will allow you to live whilst adventuring, but for those of us who prefer to eat in lavish style, this portable solar cooker is an absolute must! No batteries, energy source or gas needed with this oven which makes yummy meals though the raw power of the sun. This stove cooks at around 360 degrees fahrenheit but can reach up to 550. It bakes, roasts, steams and sautes in one fluid motion and promises to complete the whole process in only 20 minutes. Plus, what you don’t eat right away can be placed back inside the oven to keep toasty for easy gobbling later. The stove’s solar vacuum tube cooking chamber has a layer of insulation meant to keep heat locked in and the cold kept out.! The whole thing is convertible and lightweight, only weighing in at around 7 and a half pounds. Buy one new for around 250 bucks or buy the smaller model called the GoSun solar dogger for only 60. The dogger is perfect for hot dogs and other small meaty treats. It cooks at 75 degrees fahrenheit, promising to grease hungry tummies for those of us dining in the wilderness on a budget.

If you wade through a cold river (rivers are common in many wilderness areas), or find yourself suddenly in the rain need to get a fire going quickly — get this fire going using a micro torch. You can even cook, right from the torch.

It may sound a good idea just to keep traveling even after the sunset if you are not exhausted completely. However, it is one of the most dangerous things that you can do in the wild. Make sure that all your traveling can wait until the break of the dawn. Traveling through the wilderness in the dark is an open invitation to danger.

His How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times is a non-fiction book drawn primarily from his posts on SurvivalBlog.com. The book was described as The preppers’ Bible, by a Reuters journalist.[20] His blog addresses preparing for the multitude of possible threats toward society. Your list is pretty good and pretty comprehensive. However, it seems a bit all over the the map. Maybe some further breakdown of home/car/BOB would be in order. Right now, my home and car kits are good, but I’m browsing the web for ideas on more or better gear for my BOB. And as I’m browsing through your list I see…

  1. Admonition – from a guy who represented a major water company. Two liter pop bottles are cheap because they are not designed to be on the shelf or stored for a long period of time. Buy the correct container although it costs more money. Do not use 5 gallon plastic recycled water containers. Chemicals that have migrated into the plastic can not be removed by washing. Use paint buckets with a “2” rating on the bottom that are new. They are rated as food grade. Not as good as the more expensive specific blue water containers, but they will be ok on a budget.
He criticizes their business model of offering a ‘free’ knife if you just pay postage because you then get upsold some other stuff…well that’s business for you. Hook someone in with a free / low priced offer then upsell them some more stuff.
small rocket stove and coiled copper piping, you can heat and pump all the hot water you will ever need without electricity. I agree with Ron Marlett as I have seen a similar hot shower concept here in Africa Bosveldt. This is worth looking in to.
