Beyond PLBs, Smith said a survival kit should include items like a map of the area, a compass, a space blanket, first aid, a flashlight or headlamp, and fire-starting supplies. He recommends keeping the essential stuff physically attached to your body in a pouch on your belt.
Donation time!! I’m pretttttty late on this one, but I finally donated my most recent $$ from the “Trust No One” TB release. This time to the San Antonio Food Bank. Yay! Apparently, a $1 donation = 7 meals, so this will equal… 637 meals to people in need. 😎
But here’s what you can do: find a piece of plastic (saran wrap is perfect) with which you can seal the hole, so that the chest cavity around the lung doesn’t get more air pressure than the lung itself. If this happens, the lung will collapse. When you seal the hole, leave a flap at the bottom that will allow air to leave through the wound without entering it. This may seem useless now, but you never know—you might have to save someone’s life someday.
The basic physical instinct is survival. You eat for your survival. You drink for your survival. You play, read et cetera for your leisure. These come after the basic survival instincts. Subconsciously, whatever we do, is somehow related to it.

• Dew: Dew collects on plants and grasses. Using a cloth or piece of clothing soak up the dew and then squeeze it into a container. This can be a very effective method of collecting a considerable amount of water.

The Credit Card Knife is perhaps Survival Life’s biggest namesake. This small knife starts out about the same size and weight as a traditional credit card, but unfolds in seconds into a fully functional knife. It features a surgical steel blade, protective hand guard, and even a built-in safety sheath to keep it from becoming dull, and from accidentally opening in your pocket or pack.
It’s easy to get flustered when you’re out in the wild, particularly if you’ve ended up in a survival situation. With your heart racing and your mind blurred though, your decision making won’t be anywhere near it’s best.
Planning to take a relaxing boat ride soon? For the sake of safety, let’s just say things go sideways and the engine stalls in the middle of a freak ocean storm. Would you be able to survive? While you may have the skills to draw an imaginary friend out of a volleyball, it turns out that there are actual necessary steps that must be followed in order to survive the wilderness.
For number 2 and our runner-up we have SHTFPlan.com. Mac Slavo’s SHTFPlan covers a host of topics that include preparedness planning, investing, geo-politics and self reliance. If you encounter snakes, leave them alone. Snakes bite because they are hungry or because they are threatened. We are too big to be seen as prey to most snakes; they do not regard humans as food. Stand still and the snake will go away. Attack it and it will retaliate. If one curls up in your kit, move it out with a long stick and gently prod it away. If it comes in your direction, stand still. It doesn’t know that you are causing its discomfort and if you do not jump around, it will probably not even notice you. However, if you kill the snake you can enjoy eating it. Since you probably don’t know if it’s venomous or not, a good rule is to cut off the head, and then cut the same distance back from that point down the body. This will remove the poison glands, if there are any.

Scissors. Yes, they are on your multitool. No, they do not work! They really don’t work on the small tools except for the Leatherman Micra. Try it. Scissors are the reason I have sent three Gerber tools on a short brutal trip to the trash can. The test most fail first is to cut a 1 oz bag of Planters peanuts lengthwise. IMHO, the one in your first aid/ med kit should stay dedicated to that purpose. Get another for the other camp chores. They don’t have to be huge, but they do have to work.

Cell Phones: While cell phones are still not 100 percent reliable in the backcountry, service coverage and the usefulness of smartphones has increased dramatically in the last seven years. While cell phones are still questionably reliable in the backcountry, many adventurers will carry them anyway as they also serve as light cameras and can help with GPS and electronic compass navigation. Today, most of them also work as a flashlight. Regardless, they are worthless if the battery is dead, so plan accordingly.
I was going to order their Everstryke Permanent Match from a FB ad. I am so glad I thought to research the company a little first. This link shows a warning on the BBB’s website – in big red letters. I protected my personal information, as well as my bank card, by doing a quick Google search that took about 30 seconds.
Most everyone loves fire. Fire is essential in a wilderness survival situation for a few reasons. One, it provides warmth which keeps body temperature up. Two, it provides heat used to purify water. It also provides light, heat to cook food, and serves as a center to draw people in. Earth based wisdom teaches us that fire is a spirit unto itself, and encourages us to have a good relationship with fire. I know that despite my passion for it, I didn’t truly appreciate fire until it took me four days to get it with a fully primitive bow and drill fire making kit on my first wilderness survival solo.
Just remember, this only works in the Northern Hemisphere; and during Daylight Savings Time you would use the 1 instead of the 12 to determine the center line. If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, orient the 12 directly towards the sun, and the north/south line will still cut directly between the 12 and the hour hand, but north will be closest to the sun.
While I haven’t been prepping for very long in comparison to most of you, I’d like to think I’ve learned quite a lot over the years through mistakes I’ve made with prepping. Honestly, mistakes make some of the most valuable lessons resonate with you, even when you probably …
FireLaces are one of those pieces of gear you can wear every day. These are shoelaces with mini Ferro rods the ends. Just loop the striker into the laces, and you’re shoes become a survival tool in their own right.
I don’t know if this has been shared or not, but Penicillin and Amoxicillin should be included in the list of medicines, along with cephalosporin (Keflex). All of these I believe can still be found over the counter as farming supplies. Be careful, however, as the dosage for humans will be majorly different than that on the label. I would suggest getting a dosage chart for each antibiotic.
We as humans have developed an unsettling dependence on technology for everything. Think about it, name a thing in your house that you can actually make from scratch. I bet you can’t! We live in a culture where we just buy things that we need. We are so coddled that a simple problem like a power outage leaves us in a frenzy.
A geothermal system is a very efficient power source, steam is nearly free. The piping and Generators are typical of Hydro, Nuclear and other Electrical power plants. Yet, in this case the customers paid high rates. Because of the design of the Electrical infrastructure. No surge and No storage. They had to install expensive turbine (gas jet engine) powered generators.
We found the list to be quite extensive and inclusive of some of the best resources for preparedness planning on the internet. The websites have been ranked using a variety of metrics, including Google Pagerank, Incoming Links, and the Alexa Traffic ranking algorithm. Though these rankings don’t necessarily determine quality of content or regularity of publishing, the fact that they have a high volume of visitors and incoming links suggests that people visiting the web sites find the information of benefit and consider the content to be informative and worthy of links from their own blogs or social network pages.

The Canary island of La Palma has been rattled by another swarm of earthquakes. This new swarm reignites fear that the Cumbre Vieja volcano could erupt just four months after a swarm of 200 earthquakes rocked the island.
