It may also happen that subjects with a lifetime less than some threshold may not be observed at all: this is called truncation. Note that truncation is different from left censoring, since for a left censored datum, we know the subject exists, but for a truncated datum, we may be completely unaware of the subject. Truncation is also common. In a so-called delayed entry study, subjects are not observed at all until they have reached a certain age. For example, people may not be observed until they have reached the age to enter school. Any deceased subjects in the pre-school age group would be unknown. Left-truncated data are common in actuarial work for life insurance and pensions.[4]

The presence of birds is also a great indicator of a water body nearby. Birds like finches and wild pigeons are grain eaters who drink lots of water. If you can find these birds, you can be assured that a water body is nearby.

This is the method underlying the survival random forest models. Survival random forest analysis is available in the R package randomForestSRC.

Hellava list, Elise! Way too much for my brain to handle. 🙂 The Mora Companion goes with me in the woods as a neck knife and for finer bushcraft tasks. Though it’s not full tang, mine has taken a lot of abuse and keeps performing admirably. I plan on shaving with it in the bush one day.

I was hoping to gain some kind of mentorship type relationship and the fact that you guys have the FB page and built this community was completely worth attending, just on it’s own. Just so after we leave the workshop, it’s not like we’re on an island all by ourselves.

Survival Power: Though a Marlin 336XLR comes at a higher price, this rifle is suggested for people who haven’t spent a lot of time on a gun range — and again that is due to it’s higher accuracy, requiring less marksmanship skills to get your aim correct. There are rifles that do come in at a lot less cost; but with these rifles a lot more time should be spent learning how to shoot with a scope so that you can correctly hit your target.

When you get to a water source, you’ll want to filter it, purify it and put some in a bottle. Because you rarely know how far the next water source is and a water bottle keeps you hydrated between sources.

When it comes to survival tips and techniques, the more you know, the better. While you can’t possibly prepare for every single thing that is out there, you can try your best to be as aware of many of them as you can. Sometimes these bits and pieces of knowledge can seem quite like useless trivia at times, but don’t be fooled. The knowledge is there not to be useful ALL the time, but rather to be there when you need it the most. That is why we put together a massive list of 50 Survival Tips and Tricks for the outdoors.

You never know what’s inside a stream or river. It has all sorts of stuff that you probably don’t want in your system. Grab a sock and fill them with charcoal. Follow it up with a layer of sand and then finally a layer of grass. The grass will catch the large particles in the water while the sand will filter out the fine granules. The charcoal will purify the water of any harmful chemicals.

It’s basically two pits dug side-by-side in the ground with a tunnel connecting them. The fire is in one pit, and the other pit allows air—and oxygen—to reach the fire from below via the tunnel. From a practical standpoint, this is also an ideal way to keep a fire going in very windy conditions—but you can still pretend you’re hiding out from murderous cannibals, if you want.

If you sleep downwind to the campfire, your whole shelter will soon start smelling like smoke and fire, and you want that. Also, there is a chance that if the gusts are strong, a burning piece firewood can fly right into your shelter while you are asleep.

Banangrams! I hate playing that game with my (English teacher) daughter! I get stressed out playing games with time limits, or with “experts” who know the game much better than I do. I guess it’s partly my competitiveness and partly post-traumatic stress that I’ve been dealing with. I don’t mind Clue, even though I’m not good at it, but Monopoly is “bad” for me.

In March 2011, Rawles formulated the American Redoubt movement. Rawles proposes five western states (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, eastern Oregon, and eastern Washington) as a safe haven for conservative Christians and Jews.[72] The concept was endorsed by former Presidential candidate Chuck Baldwin, who had recently relocated his entire extended family to western Montana.[73] One of its adherents, John Jacob Schmidt, started a weekly podcast called Radio Free Redoubt to help further the movement.[74] There is no data to measure how many people have moved into the area in response to this plan.

Planning out what to eat after an emergency situation arises is one of the first things survivalists and preppers typically do.  Although stockpiling food is an excellent idea, it’s also great to have a plan for what happens if the emergency situation extends longer than a stockpile will last. Fishing and hunting outdoor gear, in this situation, will prove very valuable.

According to NASA, planet Earth is set for a terrifying close encounter with a “hazardous” monster asteroid the size of Buckingham Palace tomorrow. The size of this asteroid is still in question, but it won’t matter if it hits the Earth.

Here for the first time and am glad I came. I have designed and built my own off grid home and existence in southern Colorado (solar powered) but have yet to create my own food supply (aquaponic) in the future or survival preparation to the extent I hope to in the near future.
