Your job is to prevent any parasites in the animal bite from reaching the blood. Washing thoroughly can get rid of some pests reducing the parasite load. It gives your immune system a better chance to fight the infection.

We’ve received a lot of reader questions asking us how to prep for diabetes over the years. How many? I couldn’t possibly count. It’s a lot, and not all from preppers who are themselves diabetics either. We get a number of concerned relatives who are emailing because they …

Why? Well, ounce for ounce, an animal’s eyeball will give you more protein that a steak. Admittedly, Bear grimly declared the thing was “awful” after eating that eyeball in Siberia, but you’ve got to be strong-stomached if you’re willing to survive. A choice between death and eating an eyeball? We’d definitely go with the latter.

Plan, plan and plan! If you are going on proposed expedition, spend more time preparing it. Make sure that you play each possible scenario in your head before setting out. I know that a 100% prepared adventure is no adventure, but still, planning it makes it much safer. And that is what you want, right?

You learn a lot about yourself when you camp. Your patience will be tested when pitching a tent or building a fire; you’ll see food from a whole new perspective; and you’ll understand that sleeping on the ground with little else than a nylon sheet protecting you actually feels pretty awesome.

This was the first survival kit that I’ve bought, so I can’t compare it to others on the market, but it seems to be a well-put-together survival kit. The plastic compartment is made of durable material, although, I wouldn’t count on it being watertight. The rubber gasket on the lid doesn’t seem seal against the base well enough to make it fully waterproof. Inside, it holds just about everything needed to survive a couple nights out in the woods if you get stranded or lost. With much success, I lit a fire with the sparker and tinder-quik cotton fire starters on the first spark! The knife is really neat; it has a built in high-intensity LED light, with a switch, pointed in the direction of the knife blade to help you see as you are cutting or carving at night, and it has an integrated whistle on the rear to alert a near-by rescuer of your approximate position. In the bottom portion of the container, there’s some fishing tackle, small diameter cord, and steel line that can be used for fishing, traps, snares, and shelters. The top portion contains literature on wilderness survival techniques, a large signal mirror, and how-to guide for the kit. I use the signal mirror to see when I’m putting my contacts in my eyes and to put on camoflauge face paint for hunting. This is a great compact survival kit for any backpacker!

From the definition of Λ ( t ) {\displaystyle \Lambda (t)} , we see that it increases without bound as t tends to infinity (assuming that S(t) tends to zero). This implies that λ ( t ) {\displaystyle \lambda (t)} must not decrease too quickly, since, by definition, the cumulative hazard has to diverge. For example, exp ⁡ ( − t ) {\displaystyle \exp(-t)} is not the hazard function of any survival distribution, because its integral converges to 1.

On the other hand, the fleshy part of rose hips can be used to treat constipation. The outer shell, on the other hand, provides lots of vitamin C. You can also make tea out of dandelions. The plant is edible as well.

I agree with you. 90% of the people who think they will survive from any list will be sorely mistaken. They will die. This list or any other list is a reference for people to think about. Without a doubt there are other items people will regret not having. Duplication of item is not wasteful, but resourceful. If something breaks or is lost then you have a backup. A list is just a list. Using the items on a list, repeatedly, will give ‘brain’ muscle memory. You can not go out and buy a gun, and expect to know how to use it if you have never practiced. I have been an avid backpacker for decades; often traveling alone in the back country. I know how to use my equipment very well. I don’t have to ‘think’ about how to use my equipment.

When you choose a sleeping bag rated for cold weather, sleeping bags filled with goose down are lightest — but they come with a consequence. If your bag gets wet it loses all insulating properties. A single tear can cause down to spill out. Your best bet is to get a down sleeping bag with a Gortex liner, to protect from moisture. But the price for Goretex down bags with a high rating can be steep — which can climb to $500 or more.

I don’t think the world has seen this phenomenon yet: a major war, during which both sides use severe repeated hacking attacks on the general computing infrastructure in each nation. But it is inevitable. Every developed nation is highly computerized, … Continue reading →

  1. Signal your location. Make noise by whistling, shouting, singing, or banging rocks together. If you can, mark your location in such a way that it’s visible from the air. If you’re in a mountain meadow, make three piles of dark leaves or branches in a triangle. In sandy areas, make a large triangle in the sand. Three of anything in the wilderness is a standard distress signal.
I will be curious of your opinion about this… Do you believe that there is an increasingly two tiered economy / society? The “Haves” and the “Have Nots”? If yes, are you increasingly concerned as it relates to your security and preparedness? To what extent might this two tiered society …
