Where There is No Doctor – Covers all aspects of people’s health ranging from diarrhea to malaria and bone fractures and ringworm. Special emphasis is placed on hygiene, a healthy diet and vaccinations, and the book explains to readers what they can do themselves and how to prevent, recognize and treat many common sicknesses. It also shows them how to recognize problems they are unable to cope with and need to refer to a health worker. (description from wikipedia)

“The Existentialist’s Survival Guide is a remarkable book. We can’t think of another writer who so thoroughly understands Kierkegaard and his followers, presents their thought more accessibly than they themselves did, and—crucially— relates them concretely to the dark places in his own life, and ours.” — Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein, authors of Plato and a Platypus Walk Into A Bar, and Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates

I prefer the Sawyer Products SP128 Mini Water Filtration System over the lifestraw. It’s rated for 100,000 gallons (provided you backflush it with the included syringe when it needs it) and it can be “hacked” for use as a gravity fed filter. If you’ve ever had to pump a filter for 5 or 6 hydration bladders you’ll REALLY appreciate this ability.

Powerful eruptions at a volcano in southern Japan spewed ash thousands of feet into the air on Wednesday as authorities warned locals not to approach the mountain. Shinmoedake volcano has erupted several times in violent explosions recently.

Staying warm in a cold or freezing wilderness can be a tough challenge. However, there are tips that you can use to make it easier. If you find yourself in a situation where the cold is getting the better of you, remember the following tips.

Happy Holidays! To celebrate, let me share the unreleased cover songs I recorded this year that you haven’t heard (if you’re not on my email list). A Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates has offended a lot of Democrats with his powerful speech on guns that quickly went viral, raking in over 13 million Facebook views since Friday. Nick Freitas finally hit the nail on the head and…

So you are a Spyderco fan. Can’t go wrong with those knives. Out of my 80 some knives my favorite is a Spyderco Warrior. Superb workmanship and coolness factor is off the charts. So sharp it is scary.

Forget first class. A Popular
Mechanics study of 20 commercial jet crashes with both fatalities and survivors found that passengers seated in the rear cabin (behind the wings) had a 69 percent chance of survival, compared with just 49 percent for those in first class. If you truly fear flying, it’s worth giving up the legroom for some peace of mind in the rear.

Option two: Replace it. Play a different song all the way through, at full volume, in an attempt to chase away your earworm with something more forgettable.
In one U.K. study, the most popular “cure” song was the national anthem, “God Save the Queen.” On this side of the pond, try humming “The Star-Spangled
Banner” to clear your head before twilight’s last gleaming.

In hostile territory, a good set of binoculars offers stealth and can help you identify an ambush up ahead as well as dangerous dogs, armed criminals, or other dangers before they find you or before you stumble into them.

So an album that I wrote and sang on back in 2002 just got a little acclaim from Rolling Stone! And they quote me from my interview from Beneath the Grid Music. Now… how to get a mention for Survival Guide… *starts frantically jotting down new lyrics and random music notes*

Dehydration is no joke. Whether hiking the Grand Canyon or spending another day at the office, staying hydrated is essential to health. The human body is at least two-thirds water, and once its liquid content is reduced, bad things start to happen. Let’s review mild to serious effects of dehydration to help your water intake efforts.

Picking out the best Victoriniox Swiss Army Knife is not at all an easy feat considering just how many options Victorinox gives you, and how many variations of those different there are to choose from. There’s no way I could have mad up a list of the top SAKs on my own, so I …

In order to help alleviate some of these stresses and better inform current and prospective international postdocs, the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) has created an online resource, the Survival Guide for International Postdocs. The Survival Guide was compiled by members of the former International Postdoc Committee with the expert assistance of university international offices and postdoctoral offices, as well as an immigration attorney. It draws on the experiences of current and former postdocs who have traveled to the United States to do their postdoctoral training.

Matches – while most people assume that they know the proper way to light a match, it never ceases to amaze me how many people don’t. Try this – test yourself to build and light a fire in just five minutes using only one match. Can you do it in a nearby forest? Try out different habitats. How about in the snow? In the rain?

Over the past several years, the Remington group, or the group that owns Remington, haven’t had a very good track record with new firearms. As a matter of fact, it has been one failure after another, in my humble opinion. We had the Remington REM380, and it had a lot of problems. Then, there was the R51, and I’m not totally convinced they have worked out all the bugs in this one just yet. And Remington took over manufacturing Bushmaster AR-15 style rifles. I had an early Remington “Bushmaster”, it wouldn’t group at 25 yards; it patterned like a shotgun, no matter what ammo was used. Then the grand ol’ 1911, that was one Remington used to make during WW2. The early, new model guns were a failure. They would shoot loose inside of a couple hundred rounds. I kid you not.

This one hits the spot for family gatherings or even gathering around to watch movies or sports events on television. It’s a little heartier and tastier than the basic recipe. Another variation we sometimes make is to substitute a can of meat/beef chili for the sausage and salsa/milk. However, we prefer this version best.

If you want a multi-tool for both urban survival and your firearms, you can purchase a Leatherman Tactical Multi-Tool, get superior construction also like the Swiss Tool mentioned above; be sure to get the the 40 bit add-on set. • My next tip maybe common sense to some, but figured it’s still worth noting: for better maintenance of keeping balance, it’s best to keep heavier things on top and the lighter items at the bottom. What this will do is help you with stability while you are on the move.
