the only item i would add to this list would be a decent crossbow. depending on the post SHTF situation it works wonderfully if you dont want to draw attention to your hunting activities. it is quiet and simple to operate and you can make replacement bolts for it from straight sticks if things are really awful. but as with the pellet rifle you want to practice shooting with it long before your situation devolves to life or death as accurite shooting takes practice!

Always aim to memorize the map of the area. You should always aim to have a laminated or waterproof case of a map to ensure security of map. We highly recommend that you try to memorize major landmarks, rivers, roads, and other areas that stand out on the map

bom/ShutterstockRocketing riders straight up a 456-foot tower at 128 mph before plunging them down the other side, Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, is the tallest and second-fastest roller coaster in the world. As you can see from the front row, it’s no joke. But neither are you.

I purchased 3 of these (one for each car glovebox)…its a handy little kit, but one of the flashlights didn’t work (no, not just the battery) and when I contacted the seller directly, I received no response…disappointing

Learning how to make your own makeup not only saves money, it saves your skin from the nasty chemicals so many cosmetics feature. There are numerous organic options available these days; however, learning to make your own foundation, lip gloss and eyeliner is pretty darn nifty. It’s also handy in the event of a zombie apocalypse that includes the total destruction of your mak… Continue Reading →

If you can’t Duct it, forget it. This cloth-like scrim-backed pressure sensitive tape, is an absolute must for any survivalist. This adhesive can patch tents, fix sleeping bags, repair holes in backpacks, clothes, be used to contain wounds if no bandages are available and just might save that valuable life of yours. Some come heat or water resistant and often can be found in a variety of colors and patterns. Strong, flexible and sticky, this tape resists nearly any weather condition and it’s cheap! Find a roll of duct tape at nearly any store for as low as 5 bucks or get the super resilient version for a few bucks more. Definitely a must have on any adventure, whether trying to survive, rough it, live off the grid or just have a nice day out in the thrall of Mother Nature.

The only drawback is the multi charges for the enrollment fees. Each one you buy in automatically opts you in for more. so having a program that checks on the multi enrollment fees would be nice. Thank you again and keep up the great offers!

Since we’re bloggers ourselves, we decided it would be unfair to throw our own sites into the mix (we are of course biased!), but if you’d like to check out our survival sites besides this one, you can take a look at them here:

But in addition to a cell phone, Smith recommends personal locator beacons (PLBs), which are essentially emergency radio signal devices that communicate with satellites (and thus rescue personnel) from anywhere on the globe.

I am also quite pleased to see that the Citizens of the eastern half of Washington are making progress in constitutionally partitioning to become the State of Liberty. (A state boundary hasn’t been officially redrawn in the United States since West Virginia was Constitutionally partitioned from Virginia back in 1863. But the Liberty State movement is proceeding apace.) I hope that a similar effort gains steam, to partition eastern Oregon.

Each week we would meet and go over my numbers and even though I was a top producer she insulted me. “What am I going to do with you Michael?” – was her favorite question as she shook her head from side to side like I was a bad boy.

Write the pain away. Relief can be as simple as freewriting for 20 minutes a day, four days in a row, says James
W. Pennebaker, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas. “Across multiple studies, people who engage in expressive writing report feeling happier and less negative than they felt before,” he writes in his book, Expressive Writing: Words That Heal. Per one study, “those who kept their traumas secret went to physicians almost 40 percent more often than those who openly talked about them.”

Either Constitutional Law will be reestablished in America, and the treasonous cabal of Deep State minions are tried and convicted for their crimes –  or –  Trump and company turns out to be a minor speedbump on the final stretch towards the New World Order.

The North Star always points to true north, which is great for when you don’t have a compass at night or when you want to check the accuracy of the compass you have. Try looking for the big dipper first, which is easy to find if you know your constellations. Then draw an imaginary straight line through the edges of the big dipper and this will lead you to the tail of the little dipper. This is the North Star.

I thought the same thing, at first. The thirty pages is the table of contents. Look on the left side of your screen. You click on each chapter, and only those pages are shown. I hope this makes sense.

A good flashlight is a survival basic. But this isn’t just a flashlight. It’s actually a tool designed for your car, with an attached window breaker and seat-belt cutter in case things get out of hand. Accidents happen, and it’s the dude who’s prepared for it that doesn’t have to sit in an upside-down car for 14 hours, slowly bleeding to death, before someone finds him.

std.err is the standard error of the estimated survival. The standard error of the Kaplan-Meier product-limit estimate it is calculated using Greenwood’s formula, and depends on the number at risk (n.risk in the table), the number of deaths (n.event in the table) and the proportion surviving (survival in the table).

The tiny house movement continues gain momentum, and it’s not crazy-hard to understand why. While moving into a 200- square- foot home is a huge change if you’re used to living in a 1,000- or 2,000- square- foot residence, there are many benefits to tiny house living. If you are looking to seriously downsize, review why a tiny house might be exactly what you need.

The workshop was more than just enlightening; it actually put us in charge of own success, and aligned us with others who are doing the same thing. I absolutely feel that I (and any one of us) could easily shoot for a huge client. The exercises in the workshop gave me the confidence, power, and intimate knowledge to know how to be a high-level pro. Not just the craft behind the shots which I’ve already been doing for more than a decade, but the whole business end of things, that can seem overly daunting to a creative type. But sorting this stuff out properly allows you to enjoy the creativity that comes from the gigs, focus on landing them, and provide direction for your energies.

When it comes to gear, I feel I have settled into a groove. I rarely experiment with tobacco these days (same with the pipes) and just stick to what I know I like. Hope you had a merry Christmas, and we’ll see you in the new year! Everyday Ca…

Good list and perfect because there is everything from doctoring yourself to fighting for yourself and even growing food for yourself. When it comes to covering every aspect, you have done it right, M.D.!

The suggestions for the kit looks great, however I think you need to get your basics together first, fire making, shelter, first aid, food, and water, for at least 3 days, then weigh your kit. Now see how many pounds are left before you hit your maximum load which is going to vary for each person. Remember if your buggin out this isn’t a Saturday afternoon hike in the park where after three hours or so you thrown your pack in the car and go home. It’s going to be with you day in and day out.

Survival Power: A military Goretex sleeping bag system can do a good job at keeping you warm — but only to negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit — you’ll have to wear additional layers and craft additional insulation if temperatures drop below negative 10.

One of the best ways to spend the night is by making a make-shift hammock. Find a couple of trees that have tall trunks for your hammock. Trees that have less foliage are best. Make a hammock as high as you can and climb into it to spend the night. It will protect you from wild animals as well as the creeping and crawling insects.

Not only does this kit assemble into a shovel – perhaps the most basic of all survival tools – the handle itself is a multi-tool, disassembling into components that include a knife, a fire starter, a saw, a screwdriver, and on and on it goes. The adjustable shovel blade itself includes a ruler and a can/bottle opener, and one side of it is designed to be used as a knife edge. This shovel is a goddamn badass.

When you get to a water source, you’ll want to filter it, purify it and put some in a bottle. Because you rarely know how far the next water source is and a water bottle keeps you hydrated between sources.

Torches are pretty useful to wave at a rescue team from above. It’s also a good way to light your path during the night if your flashlights die on you. To make one, take a long branch and split the tip in half. Take some tree bark and insert them between the split branches. Ignite it and you’ve got yourself a torch. Birch trees are pretty ideal for this because of their flammable material.

While the idea that some form of major change is on the horizon is constantly gaining steam when it comes to public acceptance; there are still those who have seen the reality of the situation but do not yet know the best way to go about ensuring they and their family are prepared when the other shoe drops. Emergency food is the key to long-term survival which is why those who want to be ahead of the game are preparing now by stockpiling food.

Don’t fight the tide. Shock waves from the back of the crowd will push you forward—do not fight them. Stopping is the quickest way to fall, and falling is the quickest way to die. Instead, “wait for the surge to come, go with it, and move sideways. Keep moving with it and sideways, with it and sideways,” says Edwin Galea,
a crowd behavior specialist at the University of Greenwich.

The Bear Mountain Bridge Hammock is a sleep straight hammock, due to the way it’s constructed. It is also an enclosed shelter — if you opt for one of these you don’t need a tarp shelter or tent. Consider a hammock like this model for those times you want to be up off the ground — for example during heavy rains or crossing through marsh, swamp, or even jungle.

blvdone/ShutterstockWhen a huge crowd hits a tight choke point, a scary thing happens: The crowd starts moving like a fluid, each person forced forward by the people behind, regardless of whether there’s anywhere to move. This occurred last September when a group of more than a million pilgrims reached a narrow street intersection in Mecca. Trapped between the
force of people behind them and
the wall of people in front of them, some 2,200 died from compressive asphyxiation, the air literally crushed from their lungs. It’s a terrible fate but one you can avoid. Here’s how.

Moving my home to the “country” was less about lower property taxes, empty nest syndrome, and proximity to wineries than about avoiding more populated areas and enabling greater security in the event of a major event. Adding a fence and planting lots of blackberry, raspberry, and rose bushes around the perimeter of my property was less about “curb appeal” than about slowing down potential intruders.

Your body will not last more than three days without water. If you are lucky enough to be near a body of freshwater – good for you, just make sure to boil before quenching your thirst. No water in sight? Continue your search and construct a rain catcher or water still.

Now is the time to be calm and think positive. It doesn’t sound like much, but optimism goes a long way, and in a survival situation, it starts with you, your attitude and your will no matter how scared and alone you may feel. First, keep a realistic outlook and diligently plan to keep yourself in the best possible physical and mental state. If something isn’t working out, like building a fire or shelter, don’t rush, because that can lead to panic. Stop, breathe and think about what you need, observe your surroundings and organize a new plan.

If you are interested in attending the Survival Guide, please get in touch with Nichelle at nichelle@keatleyphoto.com to find out where we are hosting this next. We have done this workshop in Seattle, St. Louis, and Austin, and there will be opportunities in other cities in the future as well. If you are attending, Nichelle will send out information on hotels as part of the registration packet.

This knife has a 3.5-inch blade crafted from Sandvik 12C27 stainless-steel. The blade sits in a rubberized handle, which contains the hidden fire starter rod. The Swedish FireSteel firestarter is one of the best quality ferrocerium rods on the market. The cascade of 5,400°F sparks is plentiful and easy to strike, making it great for everyday campfire starting and survival purposes alike. Altogether, the knife, spark rod, and sturdy plastic sheath only weigh a little over 4 ounces. They are available in several color choices—I recommend the orange, red or pink color for safety and visibility.

There are people in this world, such as monks and missionaries, who may not appear greedy and lack the desire to control other people or things. It is only because these people believe in an afterlife. They sacrifice the present life for the sake of the future life in heaven. What is heaven? In my view, it is the place with indefinite control. Therefore, these people still want control in the end. They want to control their life to come because they believe in it. People that have more control over other people are called politicians. People that have more control over things are called capitalists and people that have more control over knowledge are called scientists. All these people are the forerunners at the intellectual marathon race.

A bit of a luxury item in a survival scenario but drinking water out of your hands is not convenient. Plus, if you happen to have coffee, soup, or freeze-dried meals you’ll need a bowl or cup to eat these meals.

Never make the mistake of trying to outrun a flash flood. You will be caught and swept away before you realize. If you see a flash flood coming, immediately go to high ground and stay the heck away from it.

• Let the air flow: The purpose of this shelter is to create shade. Use available material such as bark, leaves, a poncho, emergency sleeping bag or blanket or any available fabric to cover one side.

• Dew: Dew collects on plants and grasses. Using a cloth or piece of clothing soak up the dew and then squeeze it into a container. This can be a very effective method of collecting a considerable amount of water.

Real binoculars are for the wilderness. Get yourself a pair of real binoculars. Outdoor Life rated several binoculars, most coming in at over $1000, with one priced at $2700. That is steep! But Outdoor Life did give a high rating to a cheaper pair — The Alpen Apex XP 8×42 is priced at about $300 and received Outdoor Life’s Great Buy tag. If you have the money to spend, sure, go ahead and spend top dollar, buy the best of the best. You will get more bang for your buck. But you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck as well with the Alpen Apex 8×42 for a lot less.

You certainly couldn’t accuse him of living life in half-measures anyway, but whether he’s being badass, ingenious or just disgustingly logical, he certainly knows how to get the job done. Here are some Bear Grylls survival tips that prove just that… We’re guessing you don’t fancy following all of them!

About Blog – The mission of the team behind Survival-Nation is to build a network of like-minded preppers to share resources, products and ideas. It’s the same with quite a bit of the gear on this list as well. Sure it’s helpful to have a firesteel, but if you don’t know how to make sparks from it, it’ll be rendered practically useless. You’ll want to at least test out a lot of the gear you have to make sure you’ll know how to use it when you need to, and you’ll also want to use the gear enough so you’re sure it won’t break on you when you need it the most.

I basically gave up carrying a flashlight due to a lack of pocket space. I recently found this thing on Amazon and since then have been carrying it. It’s freaking amazing (relative to its size). Side note – picked up the Matriarch Wave just…

Flint and steel are probably the oldest tricks to start a fire. All you need to do is strike the flint against the steel to make a spark. You can buy portable steel, and Flint sets cheap these days. You should probably invest in one of those; they cost less than your morning cup of coffee! And coffee isn’t going to save your life!

A torch is an excellent way to illuminate your path in the dark. You can also use it as a weapon to ward off attacks from wild animals. To make a torch, find a branch of a tree and split it in half. Stick a piece of bark in the fork and light the split end, that’s all! Birch tree branches make great torches.

Brace yourself. In a 2015 crash simulation, Boeing found that passengers who both wore their seat belts and assumed a brace position (feet flat, head cradled against their knees or the seat in front of them if possible) were likeliest to survive. Seat-belted fliers who did not brace suffered serious head injuries, and those with no seat belts or bracing died on impact.

If you’re suffering from hypothermia, bubble wrap can save your life. Who would have guessed? Apparently, the air bubbles in the packing material create an insulating shield that bounces back body heat to keep a person warm. In one study, it was found that a sheet of bubble wrap was about seventy percent as effective as three cotton blankets for insulating a person—and since it’s made out of plastic, it was even more effective in the wind and rain.

a crowd behavior specialist at the University of Greenwich.

We must work together to preserve and protect the ethos that defines Burning Man and sets it apart from music festivals and other mass-produced events. Whether it’s your first time in BRC, or you haven’t gotten the playa dust out of your fun fur coats from the past 20 years, we need your help.

Add salt to your emergency kit if you haven’t already, as this mineral is an essential to human life. The body does not produce salt, but it needs it for survival. Salt is necessary for correct nerve transmission as well as sweat, blood, and digestive uses. Let’s take a quick look at why salt is something you definitely want in a survival situation.

Plastic/rubber tubing is good for slingshots, tourniquets, can be used as a straw to draw water from holes in the ground, etc. Wire saws are good, too. Though of course they can’t do everything a regular saw can, their portability, your right, makes them a huge asset.

A survival kit is something most hikers, hunters, and explorers will never break open. It will sit in the bottom of a backpack, potentially for years, encased in a waterproof vessel of some sort, lightweight and out of the way.

FM 4-25-11 First Aid – While I suggest everyone take a dedicated first-aid class under qualified instructors, this manual by the U.S. Army is a good start for anyone wanting to learn life saving first aid skills.

Maybe 25k a month is too low of a figure, but a million per month just reeks of a scam. If this was a website that stood by itself I’d be less skeptical, but given that it’s being used as a proof of concept for online marketers who want to sell you the guide for creating your own version of it, I just can’t see how their claims are true.

Pliers are another one of those survival tools that cannot easily be replaced by other devices. Being able to grip an object with powerful force and pull or twist can be essential but cannot be replicated using your fingers.

One final thought to consider are the side effects. The toxicity and flavor of iodine can be a little problematic. The iodine tablets are generally not a good choice for pregnant women, anyone with thyroid issues, or shellfish allergies. Picky children are also notorious for failing to drink iodine-infused water, which could lead to dehydration and other serious repercussions in an already dicey emergency. The Katadyn product is chlorine-based, the flavor of which dissipates over the allotted 4-hour waiting period. That product is widely tolerated and tastes much better.

SURVCO Tactical Credit Card Ax – Slim enough to carry in your wallet, the Credit Card Ax is a serious survival tool. It’s made of stainless with a transformer design that you can turn into an actual axe with a makeshift handle a few zip ties.

There is another set of people who struggle through out their life, running behind mundane materialistic things, accumulating them, until they realise that nothing will accompany them when they will depart from this earth. Better late then never, they realise the true essence of life and start living it the way they actually should have been doing their whole life.

Your job is to prevent any parasites in the animal bite from reaching the blood. Washing thoroughly can get rid of some pests reducing the parasite load. It gives your immune system a better chance to fight the infection.

We generally encounter right-censored data. Left-censored data can occur when a person’s survival time becomes incomplete on the left side of the follow-up period for the person. For example, in an epidemiological example, we may monitor a patient for an infectious disorder starting from the time when he or she is tested positive for the infection. Although we may know the right-hand side of the duration of interest, we may never know the exact time of exposure to the infectious agent.[5]

This J5 Tactical Flashlight is a great addition to your bug out bag. A good light can be used in time of distress or to locate or signal if you become lost or stranded. This tool has a lamp life of 100,000 hours and outputs 300 lumens. It’s rugged design allows it to take a beating. 250LM J5 Tact..

Stratification. The subjects can be divided into strata, where subjects within a stratum are expected to be relatively more similar to each other than to randomly chosen subjects from other strata. The regression parameters are assumed to be the same across the strata, but a different baseline hazard may exist for each stratum. Stratification is useful for analyses using matched subjects, for dealing with patient subsets, such as different clinics, and for dealing with violations of the proportional hazard assumption.

A properly packed backpack is requisite to your comfort and safety. Incorrect weight distribution leads to muscle aches and unnecessary strain on your spine. Place heavy items – water, food, and cooking gear – in the middle of your pack, close to your body. Use medium weight items – clothing, tarps, and rain gear – to cushion the heavier items, securing them, so the weight does not shift while you are hiking. Pack your sleeping bag in the bottom of your backpack or tie to the bottom. Store items that you are likely to need more frequently in the side and outer pockets – compass and map, sunglasses, toilet tissue and trowel, sunscreen, bug repellent, pocketknife, flashlight, snacks, and a small towel.

Sometimes we forget how easy we have it. Amid our crazy life schedules we tend to take for granted that purified bottle of water when thirsty, or the push of a button to light a fire. But it’s important to remember that in the blink of an eye, it can all be gone. The unexpected happens, you get in an accident or lose your way; now, it’s just you and the wilderness with no ties to civilization. Here are ten basic survival tips to get you prepared- just in case.

Astronauts are provided with survival kits due to the difficulty of predicting where a spacecraft will land on its return to earth, especially in the case of an equipment failure. In early US space flights, the kit was optimised for survival at sea; the one provided for John Glenn on the first American space flight in Friendship 7 contained a life raft, pocket knife, signaling mirror, shark repellent, seawater desalting tablets, sunscreen, soap, first aid kit, and other items.[5] A survival kit was provided for the Apollo program which was …designed to provide a 48-hour postlanding (water or land) survival capability for three crewmen between 40 degrees North and South latitudes.[6] It contained a survival radio, a survival light assembly, desalter kits, a machete, sunglasses, water cans, sun lotion, a blanket, a pocket knife, netting and foam pads.[7]

Regardless of what it looks like, a wilderness survival shelter should embrace these essential principles. It should provide insulation and protection from all elements. It should include a heart source, whether that is a fire, the sun, or trapping body heat. It should be placed in a good location – think high and dry. And lastly, it should offer comfort and sanctuary. After all, this will be your new home.

There are couple of other sorts of people too, like one who spent their life searching for a sole purpose of their life (why do they exist here and bearing sort of such questions in their head), then there are others who sacrifice their life for others.

I know nothing about survival, which is likely why I think this kit is great. I haven’t actually used it (and hopefully never will!!) but living in a potential earthquake zone, I thought I should get something for the car. Seems to be pretty comprehensive for short term survival. What I really love is the guide that comes with it. It’s really well written, easy to understand and assumes nothing about your prior experience or knowledge. Does not take up much space in the glove compartment.

When you get to a water source, you’ll want to filter it, purify it and put some in a bottle. Because you rarely know how far the next water source is and a water bottle keeps you hydrated between sources.

Survival Life is based out of Austin, TX, and is not listed with the Better Business Bureau. Outside of the BBB, we were only able to find one online review regarding Survival Life or the Lamplighter society, which referenced difficulty ordering online.

Each branch in the tree indicates a split on the value of a variable. For example, the root of the tree splits subjects with grade < 2.5 versus subjects with grade 2.5 or greater. The terminal nodes indicate the number of subjects in the node, the number of subjects who have events, and the relative event rate compared to the root. In the node on the far left, the values 1/33 indicate that 1 of the 33 subjects in the node had an event, and that the relative event rate is 0.122. In the node on the far right bottom, the values 11/15 indicate that 11 of 15 subjects in the node had an event, and the relative event rate is 2.7. Good info, app not so much I really like the info provided by the guide. The app however is (a little) outdated. Also the guide could be a bit more optimized for mobile screens by editing the HTML in the webview. But good job making it available (offline) for devices in the first place. As per the perspective of a human being, we are born, we grow old and older and die. Only a lucky few will live to be a hundred years old. When we are born, instead of viewing it as WE come into existence, let us switch our perspectives and think that the world comes into existence for us. And when we die, the world is no more for us. So, for us its only that 100 years of world with everything in it. After I am gone, there is no world because there is no ‘me’ to behold it. So, my purpose of life should be to enjoy and stay happy in those 100 years instead of worrying to make the world “a better place”.
Those who get offended by you promoting something even though you’re giving them a ton of value upfront and for ‘free’ (it’s not really ‘free’ to create content, takes up a lot of time, effort and sometimes money) are probably not the sort of people want as your audience anyway.

Yes, a good knife is a really great tool! The Gerber Bear Grylls knife I honestly sometimes think would be really popular in the community if it wasn’t for Bear Grylls name on it. Gets so much hate on it just for a name, which is a bit sad because in my opinion, it really is quite a good tool, especially as a practically overall survival kit. But yeah, glad you at least kept it in case you might one day want it/need it. I know many who would’ve returned it or thrown it away just cause of the name.

The NEW Para Slingshot has a fun factor that is off the charts! Since the dawn of time man has been using this primitive technology to hunt, fight and compete. In biblical times, David killed Goliath with a very similarly designed sling. We have added innovative features to the design and made it extremely durable by building it with authentic military spec paracord.
It began more than seven years ago with a broken watchband, which Walchle fixed using paracord. The woven band got him some attention in his hometown of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., so he started making watchbands, then bracelets, and selling them on eBay.

As you have said before, this list is not about surviving with a 150 lb backpack. It is about having the right tools to survive at home or in a cabin. I call it, as others have also called it, ‘Urban Survival’.
The events of September 11th, Hurricane Katrina and the devastating Tsunami in Indonesia and surrounding areas have affected us all physically, emotionally and spiritually. Therefore, preparation for all types of disasters MUST be a fact of life. Why leave it up to fate and take the chance that you and your loved ones suffer needlessly during and after a disaster?
When you’re in a dark, troubled place acknowledge it. Face your fears, worries and enemies and see what happens. When you look right into the face of despair and start to deal with it you’re on your way to freedom.
To me, the best option is to store emergency food. How much? If you have none, store enough for a few days. If you have enough for a few days, get enough for a week. How much you store depends on what time frame you think you’re at risk for having to be completely independent. The early settlers of the southwest liked to store enough food for a whole year and still do to this day!
Whew, the list AND comments is extensive. I’d add Entertainment next to Electronics. Lightweight and small boardgames such as checkers, dominoes, the old fashioned pick-up-sticks or jinga could be used during powe outtages or when one uses up all the batteries, and crayons (multiuses).

Good basic kit. You’ll need to add stuff to it (like extra food, solar radio, tents, clothes, etc). But, this is a great start. It’s also nice to have 2 decent backpacks so you can take the stuff with you if you need to move locations after an emergency.
Survival Power: Though a Marlin 336XLR comes at a higher price, this rifle is suggested for people who haven’t spent a lot of time on a gun range — and again that is due to it’s higher accuracy, requiring less marksmanship skills to get your aim correct. There are rifles that do come in at a lot less cost; but with these rifles a lot more time should be spent learning how to shoot with a scope so that you can correctly hit your target.

What about using the cord? Of course I had to tear one apart. I was hoping for a knife free teardown, but I did have to bring out the blade at the end of the 93 second unraveling process. The melted end of the cord wouldn’t fit through the hole in the shackle, so I had to clip off the swollen end of the cord. Upon cutting the end of the cord, the seven inner strands were plain to see. The most surprising part of the operation was the length of cord. I was expecting about five feet of paracord, but instead, I received just over 9 feet of cord. It’s to think that so much cord was woven into such a little item. No wonder the Strap was initially stiff — it was stuffed to the gills.
Your list is pretty good and pretty comprehensive. However, it seems a bit all over the the map. Maybe some further breakdown of home/car/BOB would be in order. Laser pointer with lithium batteries, for superior signaling range. Laser pointers have resulted in at least one rescue: during the night in August 2010 two men and a boy were rescued from marshland after their red laser pen was spotted by rescue teams.[2]
Of course, every survivalist is different and has different needs. Thus, no two survival gear stockpiles or survival kits will look the same. Some will undoubtedly want to stay away from purchasing battery or electricity dependent gear, for instance, while others will want to go the hyper-minimalist route, only buying what they think they will really need (and perhaps be able to carry in a single backpack). Don’t feel pressured into extending your list of survival gear by buying something you don’t really think you’ll use. Instead, scan this list for items that you might have forgotten or think would really compliment your needs as a survivalist.

“The recent Mount Hood tragedy changed my perspective,” Smith said, referencing a climbing disaster in Oregon where three mountaineers died from exposure, despite a huge rescue effort. “A PLB might have saved their lives.”

Everyone should own a can of Devil Juice Pepper Spray that can drop an attacker from as far as 6 feet away which is important because it’s best to neutralize threats before they enter into close quarter combat.

A shelter is an important survival tool in the wilderness. It can protect you from the weather elements as well as some wildlife. Making a tent can be quite simple. However, avoid the following mistakes while building one.

This gift is one that my husband has purchased for co-workers or others on several occasions, and it is always appreciated. The knife really is sharp.. It is super convenient to be able to pull out a knife from your wallet whenever you need. We’ve used it while hiking, organizing the garage, opening packages, and a variety of other activities. The knife fits in your wallet as is the size of a credit card. It isn’t bulky. My husband has owned his for two years and still finds it sharp and useful. I am sure we will give this gift again in the future.

Hold your watch horizontally and point it so that the hour hand is facing into the sun. At the center point between the 12 and the hour hand is your north/south line, with north facing away from the sun. So if the hour hand is pointing at 4, for example, the 2 would point towards the south and the 8 would point towards the north.

Please please please tell someone where you are going before you set off for a trip. No matter where you go, even if you end up stranded unexpectedly, you started from somewhere in civilization. Tell close friends and family where you are going and if you have a specific route or amount of time you will be gone.

When choosing a space blanket (a light, thin sheet of extremely reflective Mylar), spend a little extra to buy a larger, more durable model. A space blanket can be used to block wind and water, wrapped around the body prevent/counteract hypothermia, or even placed behind you to reflect a fire’s heat onto your back, but none of this is useful if the blanket is too small or tears the moment you unwrap it.

The form of the pyre or the fire lay is critical especially if you are trying to light it in a wet environment. Make sure that the shape of the fire lay as conical as possible. If your fire lay is flat and scattered, it is going to be put out by the rain quicker.

In any mode, to win the hearts and minds of people, a propaganda operation must present the information in a method that inspires and persuades the consumer. As propaganda production grew leading up to World War II, the world witnessed an intensification of such manipulating schemes.

Like our earth based hunter-gatherer ancestors, a good survivalist has a relationship with a wide variety of diverse species that can all serve as foods, depending on the season and location. Take a look at this wilderness survival food list to learn more.

There were also at least 3 other folks who volunteered to help. After Word 2003 Microsoft switched to a new format (docx). If you have 2003 or earlier let us know and the document may be exported for the earlier versions of Word. I BTW am running 2007.

Survival models can be usefully viewed as ordinary regression models in which the response variable is time. However, computing the likelihood function (needed for fitting parameters or making other kinds of inferences) is complicated by the censoring. The likelihood function for a survival model, in the presence of censored data, is formulated as follows. By definition the likelihood function is the conditional probability of the data given the parameters of the model. It is customary to assume that the data are independent given the parameters. Then the likelihood function is the product of the likelihood of each datum. It is convenient to partition the data into four categories: uncensored, left censored, right censored, and interval censored. These are denoted unc., l.c., r.c., and i.c. in the equation below.

This is an investment in your career. The tools and information you will learn from this weekend will not only pay off the next time you get an assignment, but this is information you will carry with you for the rest of your career. The difference between guessing and actually understanding how to market yourself and price your work can often be thousands of dollars per assignment. You will be more informed, you will make better decisions, and leave nothing to guessing the next time you meet with a client, or prepare a bid.

You can safely predict that there will be some precipitation, either rain or snow, in the next 24-36 hours. The halo is caused by refraction of light by ice crystals in the cirrus clouds. If the halo is broken, the broken side points to the direction of the incoming storm.

What is a negative is the helplessness others feel when they read these blogs and see there is know way than achieve many of the qty’s of supplies and possibly having a another home to run to. Many people feel conquered already and try to make it week to week let alone stock supplies for an uprising.

It is astounding to think of how many injuries, accidents, and even fatalities could be prevented on a yearly basis if outdoor survivors were to simply acknowledge the importance of creating a safe and sound shelter.

If you encounter snakes, leave them alone. Snakes bite because they are hungry or because they are threatened. We are too big to be seen as prey to most snakes; they do not regard humans as food. Stand still and the snake will go away. Attack it and it will retaliate. If one curls up in your kit, move it out with a long stick and gently prod it away. If it comes in your direction, stand still. It doesn’t know that you are causing its discomfort and if you do not jump around, it will probably not even notice you. However, if you kill the snake you can enjoy eating it. Since you probably don’t know if it’s venomous or not, a good rule is to cut off the head, and then cut the same distance back from that point down the body. This will remove the poison glands, if there are any.

Not every state is friendly towards homesteaders, which can make going off-grid even more difficult than it already is. You’ll have a much easier time if you homestead in a state that has favorable laws and natural resources for homesteaders. There aren’t any “perfect” states for homesteaders because every state government wants to dictate how… Read More

However I think that the question you wished to ask was what is the purpose of OUR life. We had one such kind of discussion in our classroom. Many of us had different opinions and perspectives and each one was trying to prove his/ her own most logical. Some said that life had no particular purpose, others said that it is just a cycle of nature- living and dying so on and so forth.

While yes, chapped lips are far from a prepper’s first priority, these little sticks of balm are worth far more than their ability to heal lips. That tube of balm can do everything from protecting your knife from rusting to helping you start a fire. Let’s look at some of the ways lip balm can help you in … Continue Reading →

Survival Power: Snare placement can be a key factor to whether or not you catch anything; your ability to know where to set snares relies on you learning and practicing basic trapping skills for capturing small game. Baiting traps with common game foods like nuts, seeds, and berries (and artificial baits) can help boost your snaring success.

While there may be no single BEST flashlight, there are certainly plenty of attributes to be considered when selecting your flashlight.  Light is of upmost importance in a survival situation, but the ability to see in the dark is something that you should never be far from in any situation.  For example, I never go out of town without a […]

Although there is no way to precisely judge things like how long can you go without water or how long can you survive cold, there are some good estimates. One of my personal favorites is the rule of the threes. It gives you a very broad idea of some calculations that can help you in a survival situation. The rule goes as follows.

An important application where interval-censored data arises is current status data, where an event T i {\displaystyle T_{i}} is known not to have occurred before an observation time and to have occurred before the next observation time.

Stay in one place. This not only increases your chances of being found, but also reduces the energy your body expends and the amount of water and food you will need. Hunker down and stay put. Chances are that someone will be looking for you, especially if you let someone know your plans. Also, if you’re with someone else, do not separate. Having strength in numbers will help you survive.

This innovative mind blowing device has changed the way we manage our water needs once far away from that pesky thing called civilization. Sick of carrying gallons of water strapped to your back on a long hike through nature? Well, bust that spine no more with the Lifestraw! The tube is around 9 inches in length with a diameter of about an inch. The durable plastic exterior even comes with a little string attachment it even easier to carry and keep on your belt. Through this straw’s mechanical dual filtration system, all you have to do is place the one end directly into nature’s water hole and start sucking. The hollow fibres inside promise to dispel bacteria, dirt and parasites so that only the cleanest of recycled water reaches your thirsty lips. This product promises you can enjoy an entire quart of water in just 8 short minutes and one single unit has the capacity to purify 1,000 liters of water before needing replacement. Time Magazine once named this device as the invention of the year. Find them for only 20 bucks!

As anyone from a military background knows, intelligence is everything in emergencies. Without critical information such as weather conditions or roadblock locations, you may find yourself moving in the path of danger – or moving when you should be staying.

Other small kits are wearable and built into everyday carry survival bracelets or belts. Most often these are paracord bracelets with tools woven inside. Several tools such as firestarter, buckles, whistles and compass are on the exterior of the gear and smaller tools are woven inside the jewelry or belt and only accessible by taking the bracelet apart.

Get oriented. Wherever you are will become your point zero. Find a way to mark it using a spare piece of clothing, a pile of rocks, a sheet of paper, or anything else easily visible from a distance. Learn your basic directions — the sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Use this to tell directions as on a compass (in a clockwise direction starting at the top 12:00) North, East, South, West.

Once you’ve begun to stockpile survival gear, it can be hard to determine what you’re missing from your list. As a result, we’ve taken the time to create as much of a comprehensive list of all the different types of survival gear as possible.

This wilderness survival guide wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging this; hands down, skills are much more important than gear when it comes to wilderness survival. You can buy and collect all the best gear in the world, but what happens if you forget it? Or lose it? Or use it up? Then you’ll be relying on yourself – your skills. With that said, it is still good to learn about wilderness survival gear and put together a wilderness survival kit. Just don’t’ depend on it.

Freeze-dried food may fail you, especially if someone robs you for whatever food you have. A good survivalist will always have a plan B for feeding yourself and your family. Two products listed below will help you do just that. (Hint: These products make hunting easier, especially for beginners).

Most everyone loves fire. Fire is essential in a wilderness survival situation for a few reasons. One, it provides warmth which keeps body temperature up. Two, it provides heat used to purify water. It also provides light, heat to cook food, and serves as a center to draw people in. Earth based wisdom teaches us that fire is a spirit unto itself, and encourages us to have a good relationship with fire. I know that despite my passion for it, I didn’t truly appreciate fire until it took me four days to get it with a fully primitive bow and drill fire making kit on my first wilderness survival solo.

You never know what’s inside a stream or river. It has all sorts of stuff that you probably don’t want in your system. Grab a sock and fill them with charcoal. Follow it up with a layer of sand and then finally a layer of grass. The grass will catch the large particles in the water while the sand will filter out the fine granules. The charcoal will purify the water of any harmful chemicals.

The form of the pyre or the fire lay is critical especially if you are trying to light it in a wet environment. Make sure that the shape of the fire lay is as conical as possible. If your fire lay is flat and scattered, it is going to be put out by the rain quicker.

If you’re stocking a cabin, cave, or bug-out spot with purification tablets, you certainly want to consider the lifespan of the product. The iodine tablets from Potable Aqua have an indefinite shelf life, when kept in their original packaging and stored properly; Katadyn’s Micropur tablets last for two years or more.

In survival and SHTF situations, you’ll want to make sure to defend yourself and your family against both other people and animals. There are a variety of ways which you can do this, although of course some work better than others. Certainly look into attaining a firearm if this is legally permissible in your locality, and if you ever consider you may like to have it as a backup option. If you are interested in firearms, make sure to learn about them and train with them prior to an emergency situation. You can’t expect to be good with a firearm your first time shooting.

Ideal body temperature is 98.6 degrees. Twenty degrees below or six to eight degrees above can be fatal. If it takes spooning with a buddy to survive a night in a frozen tundra because you took a wrong turn at that last glacier, we won’t judge you.

I discovered Mr. Rawles’ site a couple years ago, and you are correct! It is fantastic, but I am glad to learn about more sites, though I do visit SHTF often. Not strictly survival sites, but fantastic for financial/economic information, I highly recommend http://www.zerohedge.com and http://www.dollarcollapse.com and also for all the news that is fit (or not) to print, http://www.rense.com. There are not enough hours in the day for me to read all the wonderful information on the internet.

I believe that human society is like a race. People born athletes participating in a race, not physical but intellectual. Human life is just like a marathon race. Physical marathon race has a finishing line whereas intellectual marathon race will never end. Instead, human life has a direction or goal, and the goal is called “control…”. In this world, anything other than human is a thing (including animals). The ultimate desire for human is to exercise the greatest possible control over the other human and things around him. Control on human is “power”, and control on things is “wealth”. Power is measured by positions and ranks whereas wealth is measured by money terms. With the control on human comes indirectly some control on things, such as politicians using their power to gain materialistic benefits. Likewise, with the control over things comes indirectly some control over human, such as rich people hiring other people to work for and serve them. Politicians also have direct control over things, such as government-owned enterprises and assets. Nevertheless, this kind of control is not absolute and politicians cannot blatantly take the things under control as their own assets. On the contrary, the assets of a capitalist are entirely privately owned and the capitalist has absolute control over them.
The wrist straps come in a variety of weaves and colors, all of which can be manufactured to your particular specifications. You can even choose to have an aluminum dog tag woven into the bracelet for ID purposes or just for style. In fact, Survival Straps is authorized to offer a wide variety of licensed logos, including college sports teams.
Now, what it is, for the first time ever in history when you use radio waves––If you have a product and you shoot radio frequencies at it, what always happens is the radio frequencies goes through things, walls, materials, they don’t stay within things. With the Active Edge Technology, what we’ve been able to do is actually embed radio frequencies within a particular product.
I highly recommend the Biolite stove as an emergency cooking stove. It does not require anything but natural bio fuel such as pine cones, twigs and sticks. There is a battery that recharges while the fire is burning. This battery charges phones, runs a small light via USB port on device. Very useful if there is no way to charge your devices. There are also attachments that provide camp site lighting also recharged by the stove while burning. It is pricey but works like a charm, weight is very little and has a nice grill attachment for cooking meat or veggies. I don’t work for them just have had great experience with this flexible little stove.
I’ve taken the time to organize the gear into different categories for your convenience: to make browsing much easier. Check out the list and tell us if there’s anything you think you should add to your own personal list of survival gear!
The technology, the bracelets and the claims have also reportedly been examined by a standards testing organization called Bureau Veritas. I called their Sacramento office but they didn’t know what I was talking about. They referred me to their Phoenix office. Ditto. Phoenix referred to a person in Buffalo. Why would the guy in Buffalo know about this, I asked the Phoenix person. “I don’t know,” he said, “I think he has something to do with sales.” In Buffalo, I reached voice mail and another dead end.

I prefer the Eton FR 350 radio over the Ambient Weather Emergency Radio. The problem is that neither radio can really take the beating of a survival situation, and the price of the FR 350 has become ridiculous since they were discontinued. We have a money-making market available for anyone who can produce an emergency radio that uses alternative power sources and is built to withstand a real crisis.
Thanks Jacques, I suspect that a lot of people don’t consider comms to be that important but it will determine your route to safety as well as the next step you can make without incurring extreme risk. Not to mention the ability to be rescued in a Katrina-like situation. Thanks for dropping by!
Six years later, Walchle and his growing group of craftsmen have built a reputation among adventurers and soldiers alike, with their product starring in some pretty incredible survival stories, including drowning rescues and saving soldiers on the battlefield. Now overseeing nearly 70 employees, Walchle and his wife, Melissa can’t believe what their “small, home-based business” has turned into.

One tool I keep in all my survival bags is a small folding brush saw. I originally bought one at my local hardware store for de-limbing some small trees on my property line. I found that for cutting brush, limbs, even small trees it’s quicker requires less effort and is much quieter than any bladed tool I have. It’s also inexpensive, lightweight and fits easily in the side pocket of any backpack I own.
I definitely encourage everyone to purchase products from wounded warrior project. .it’s a good cause supporting our returning soldiers and I never leave home without this bracelet on..I endorse what this organization is doing! !
I enjoyed your article, made me consider a few things I hadn’t thought of. I know we live in different countries but #12 should be #1. The human race is ugly…period. I’ve seen it in Hurricane Katrina, Mt. Penetubo eruption and 27 months in combat in the middle east…You need weapons and a solid team of like minded people, otherwise your whole list of goodies gets taken away and you get killed or worse. In England…my first priority would be “borrowing” some real weapons from your military/police people, whether they like it or not…..here is the U.S. I already have that base well covered. In SHTF remember the “Golden Rule”…….”Do unto others BEFORE they do unto you”. Because they are going to try….thanks for the food for thought. Cary Kieffer
The work I loved so much became a 24 hour living hell and when I couldn’t stand it anymore I decided to find another job. As soon as I made that choice I was free and exhilarated! It was time to get out and move on.
the only item i would add to this list would be a decent crossbow. depending on the post SHTF situation it works wonderfully if you dont want to draw attention to your hunting activities. it is quiet and simple to operate and you can make replacement bolts for it from straight sticks if things are really awful. but as with the pellet rifle you want to practice shooting with it long before your situation devolves to life or death as accurite shooting takes practice!
I can appreciate the flexibility of the Sawyer system, nice tip about the gravity fed filter hack! I really do like the Lifestraw for casual rambling in the wilderness based on size and weight (check out my review). Thankfully in Canada fresh water is never really an issue! 😉
The Multiple Pages of Survival Tools and Knives found here include items valuable to survival and fun for use in the outdoors.  It is our belief that one of the most important traits of a true Survival Tool is dependability.  At a bare minimum, please consider that as a basic survival item, a good knife is a must for any survival kit.

With proper positioning, the water will be trapped in a way that you can simple poke a hole through the bag so that the water flows through. You can then keep the water in a container. Note: Make sure your plastic bags are clean.

We must work together to preserve and protect the ethos that defines Burning Man and sets it apart from music festivals and other mass-produced events. Whether it’s your first time in BRC, or you haven’t gotten the playa dust out of your fun fur coats from the past 20 years, we need your help.

When it comes to the blogosphere there always seems to be a group of blogs, like individuals, that stand out from the crowd and provide great content and a lot of influence. In the survival and preparedness community this is no exception.

It’s time to get creative. Familiarize yourself with how to build a lean-to; there are various types of shelters you can build and each has different pros and cons. Obviously you want overhead covering for warmth at night and protection from the elements. If you are in rocky, mountainous terrain, look for overhangs. Otherwise, use limbs and leaves or anything that can provide insulation. Pine needles usually blanket the ground in thick batches, excellent for bedding.

Redundancy in the wilderness is your friends: always have extra knives, compasses, water gathering tools, and fire starting tools. Remember, surviving is all about making sure you have secured basic necessities to cook, stay warm, and self-defend.

One of the most important tip to making a shelter is making a bed. Never sleep on the bare floor of the woods. You can make a bed of dry leaves by arranging them inside your shelter. The bed will prevent the heat from your body seeping into the cold forest ground.

Very comprehensive list, the first one I’ve seen a Personal Location Beacon on. I will comment on one aspect, communication, my family is scattered all over the country and I’m sure (hopefully) they will all want to know I’m OK. We have one member of the family as a contact for all of us to call on our cell phones. Local communication lines will be jammed, internet will be down. The next goal will be to remain safe for the first 3 days, but communication is #1. Good article! A lot of knowledge here.

About Blog – James Burnette from the Survival Punk blog takes a rational, creative approach to self-reliance, applying a punk DIY ethic to survivalism without any of the fear mongering or “tinfoil hattery” found in some other areas of the survivalist movement.

As you have said before, this list is not about surviving with a 150 lb backpack. It is about having the right tools to survive at home or in a cabin. I call it, as others have also called it, ‘Urban Survival’.

Try getting Gamma lids. These make a great seal. They are not cheap….but I’ve had mine for years. Don’t stack them on top of each other without plywood or heavy cardboard between levels. Available on emergency Essentials and sometimes at your loocal Wally World.

It’s an old adage: if you have enough condoms, you can survive in the wild for years. And even if we just made that up, it’s still true. Condoms can provide you with food, water, fire, and shelter—the four key elements of survival. Getting stranded with a condom shipment would be the luckiest break apart from not getting stranded at all. For starters, condoms make very decent water storage containers. You would be surprised at how big they can get—two or three full condoms will provide enough water for a person for a week.

Pros need to outweigh cons. Is there a water source? Can you find food? Is the area ideal for signaling help? If these elements are lacking, determine if you can safely move to another spot. That said, the USAF Manual notes that it’s usually better to stay put.

One of the best ways to catch the attention of the rescuers or to pass people is using the Universal wave. It is one of the simplest gestures to learn. I am sure you must have seen it in many movies. To do the wave, stand with your legs slightly apart and wave your arms like you would do when you are doing jumping jacks.

Great sites indeed. I must have been on all of them in the past year. I’m more interested in the alternative energy area…rather than prepping. But you are right…I found a lot of great articles. Mac Slavo is my all time favorite though.

Ammo is heavy. Rocks and pebbles can be heavy too, but you don’t have to carry them. You can find them in nature. So while I don’t support slingshots as real self-defense weapons, I do think slingshots have a place in a survival gear list.

Despite what you may think at that time, food is not your priority at all. As we just saw in the rule of threes, lack of food won’t kill you for three days! Your priority is staying warm if it is cold outside.

Things are not that simple in the wild. You may not have any of these gadgets, or they won’t work. You should be able to improvise and start a fire.
