The UST StarFlash mirror has a star shaped sighting lens, to make it even more user friendly. Look through the lens at your signal target. Sweep the mirror VERY slowly right to left, and up and down. This will sweep the beam across your target, and the lens will glow when you’ve aimed the beam correctly.

Tip: An air horn can also be used as a signaling system, alerting people who may be hunting or fishing to return to camp. Be sure to have a few re-fill cans, if you want long term use — air horns have a limited life span.

Each branch in the tree indicates a split on the value of a variable. For example, the root of the tree splits subjects with grade < 2.5 versus subjects with grade 2.5 or greater. The terminal nodes indicate the number of subjects in the node, the number of subjects who have events, and the relative event rate compared to the root. In the node on the far left, the values 1/33 indicate that 1 of the 33 subjects in the node had an event, and that the relative event rate is 0.122. In the node on the far right bottom, the values 11/15 indicate that 11 of 15 subjects in the node had an event, and the relative event rate is 2.7. The human body is at least two-thirds water, and once its liquid content is reduced, bad things start to happen. Let’s review mild to serious effects of dehydration to help your water intake efforts. There is no Weather Channel to tell you how the weather is going to be in the wild. You need to read the signs in nature to predict rain or snow. One of the best ways to predict weather changes is to look at the sun or the moon. The chomebook? I wrote in one comment that I think an iPod or even an unused touchscreen smartphone of any sort loaded with maps and info would be better. High storage capacity, small and portable, easily recharged with a solar charger. However, the NSA is likely the least of my worries in a survival situation. In a bug out survival situation, I may WANT someone to find me! A man calling himself a time traveler claims to have been born in 2043 and has come back in time to let us know that nuclear war is imminent. Saying his name is Michael Phillips, the YouTube channel APEX TV uploaded a video of the man also claiming the “Big One” will hit California soon too. That pepper spray will only cover you for the first day or two, and it won’t help you from further than 10′ away. What if your attacker(s) are armed? They’ve probably got better range than your pepper spray (even if it’s in a super soaker), and you better believe once the starving starts, you need good old fashioned lead ventilation (or the viable threat of it) to hold off the hungry. A 22 is a start but it won’t end threats quickly unless you’re Chris Kyle’s second coming.   There is a lot of misinformation about quicksand out there, from how it traps people who accidentally fall in to how to get out.  The good news is that getting stuck in quicksand doesn’t have to lead to an unfortunate outcome.  Here’s what you need to know to avoid turning a problem that has … I am the invisible prepper. I am, on the surface, a caricature of everything that most SurvivalBlog readers seem to deplore. On the surface, I am a caricature of what the non-prepper community expects me to be– completely average in every way. Planning to take a relaxing boat ride soon? For the sake of safety, let's just say things go sideways and the engine stalls in the middle of a freak ocean storm. Would you be able to survive? While you may have the skills to draw an imaginary friend out of a volleyball, it turns out that there are actual necessary steps that must be followed in order to survive the wilderness. We are already making a difference, but there is more to be done. Be vocal. Write letters to newspaper editors. Show up for “public comment” meetings, and let your voice be heard. Speak out against government over-reach, injustices, and racism. Help to stop expansion of zoning and building permits. Speak out to check any expansion of Federal power, bureaucracy, and taxation. Show up at BLM, Fish & Game, and U.S. Forest Service public meetings. Remind your elected representatives that they swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, and remind them about who they work for. Write and phone them often. Yes yes! Not from what I've read anyway. Ryan and his team set out criteria for a niche they wanted to get involved with (passionate, spends money, lots of retailers and affiliates, easy to find target audience etc) and survival / prepping ticked all the boxes so they created a site on it. The first thing that you should look for is a constellation called The Big Dipper. It contains seven stars that form a somewhat ‘bowl with a handle' shape. Once you spot the big dipper, find the two stars that make up the edge of the bowl away from the handle. These are called the pointer stars. Now draw an imaginary line joining these two and extend it to find a bright star. This is the north star. As a father of 3 small children, I have always tried to protect and provide for all their immediate and future necessities.  I could not come home and tell my kids there was no food on the shelves.  Now, I can sleep in peace having purchased years of emergency food! Re: Tradeable Goods. I noticed Phil made the comment about gold being high priced. It seems to me that a significantly large number of people are not aware that gold coins come in sizes as small as 1/10th of an ounce (for about the cost of six silver dollars or so) or maybe they don’t consider a gold chain, the links of which can be taken off one at a time and traded with the right person.

Any clue as to how much this would all weigh, should one have to carry the items on thier backs? This is a fairly large list, and some of the items could be this, OR this, OR this… A few things to add or coment about:
Update: Water filtration companies are now producing portable water filters capable of filtering larger quantities of water and selling for a similar price as the Lifestraw, including Lifestraw’s own version of its latest portable water filter (compare products, specs, and reviews to help find the portable water filter that best fits your budget).
Moras are amazing. They’ve always impressed me – especially since they’re available for such low cost while they’re so damn valuable! Bics are perfect as well, and also bang for buck, you’re right they’re phenomenal and perform perfectly for lighting fires. Wigwam socks: doubt I’ll ever buy any others again. Socks made of anything but wool get ruined so damn easily.
At the same time, buying survival gear shouldn’t cost you a lot of money. Early Native Americans and other primitive cultures in the world survived without expensive sporting goods and outfitters, the REI’s and Cabelas.
The wrist straps come in a variety of weaves and colors, all of which can be manufactured to your particular specifications. You can even choose to have an aluminum dog tag woven into the bracelet for ID purposes or just for style. In fact, Survival Straps is authorized to offer a wide variety of licensed logos, including college sports teams.
To keep “hunting pressure” to a minimum, consider bow hunting due to the fact that gun shots can spook wildlife. The draw back to hunting with a bow is that bow hunting requires a lot of time learning how to shoot correctly — but it can be done and may be well worth the effort in the end for long term survival.

The Credit Card Knife is perhaps Survival Life’s biggest namesake. This small knife starts out about the same size and weight as a traditional credit card, but unfolds in seconds into a fully functional knife. It features a surgical steel blade, protective hand guard, and even a built-in safety sheath to keep it from becoming dull, and from accidentally opening in your pocket or pack.

I love these things. This WetFire product is very lightweight, easy to ignite, and it has a long burn time. Each cube weighs just .16 ounces and is capable of burning up to 10 minutes at temperatures around 1,300°F. They work in wet and windy conditions with ease. They even float and keep burning, even while floating in water. I’ve been bringing these little waxy cubes out for show-and-tell during survival classes for several years, and I’ve always observed impressive results in the field, regardless of the weather. In my most recent tests, a cube burned for 9.5 minutes on a very damp day—twice the burn time of the homemade alternative (Vaseline-soaked cotton balls). The flame was also much taller than the petroleum jelly on a cotton ball. Several spikes from the WetFire cube were 9 or 10 inches tall, which is twice the height of the flame from a greasy cotton ball.
On a budget European trip with his wife, Tim Leatherman found he never had the right tools for quick fixes from roadside breakdowns to faulty hotel plumbing. Because what he needed didn’t exist, he returned to the United States to build the multi-tool he wanted. Eight years and many rejections later, he finally had a tool he was proud of. And in 1983 with the first order of 500, the Leatherman Tool Group, Inc. was born.
Water storage at home, I don’t get fancy or spend much on it. I recycle two liter soda bottles. They’re far more durable and safer for longer term water storage than recycled milk jugs and juice jugs, and because they’re recycled they’re effectively “free” for their repurposed use. But also for me, that’s for more immediate usage. I’m a water treatment specialist, have a covered well on my property that I monitor and is safe to use (drinking from the toilet may taste though), and the community well is about 100 yards away. I’m friends with the local water treatment specialist (I run a much larger neighboring water system), have a key to the facility, and I know the well is set up to be run from a tractor’s PTO in case of power loss and generator malfunction.

YP – The Real Yellow PagesSM – helps you find the right local businesses to meet your specific needs. Search results are sorted by a combination of factors to give you a set of choices in response to your search criteria. These factors are similar to those you might use to determine which business to select from a local Yellow Pages directory, including proximity to where you are searching, expertise in the specific services or products you need, and comprehensive business information to help evaluate a business’s suitability for you. “Preferred” listings, or those with featured website buttons, indicate YP advertisers who directly provide information about their businesses to help consumers make more informed buying decisions. YP advertisers receive higher placement in the default ordering of search results and may appear in sponsored listings on the top, side, or bottom of the search results page.

Somebody who identifies himself as “Desert Rat Outdoors” is quoted on the Active Edge website thusly: Medical experts believe when the treated bracelet or necklace comes into close proximity with the body, it activates the sympathetic nervous system. This increases blood flow and oxygen intake, while at the same time decreases inflammation, which all helps to enhance performance.
After giving thought of how I could help more, I couldn’t think of much I could do, and then I noticed my Marine Corps Survival Straps bracelet lying across from me on our living room table. Immediately I knew I had to give this to Anthony. It may not be pulled apart and used as a tourniquet or some other physical life saving technique, but I knew that there has to be some other spiritual force that would work. “This is a Survival Strap, this is a Marine Corps Survival Strap!” I told myself. “This little boy is going to

Let’s face it: This is a survival knife for a worst case scenario and you find yourself living in a lawless land and need a serious knife for self defense. The US Marine KA-BAR is designed for combat — and proven in combat — and carried by many U.S. Marines into past wars. Please note: This isn’t a survival knife for a weekend recreationist; a forest service official or fish and game warden will possibly confiscate it if they know you’re carrying it, so be sure to check local laws before packing one into the wilderness on your next backpacking trip. The good news about carrying this for a worst case survival scenario? Not only is it a knife proven in combat but something you can also use to gut big game or filet a squirrel, possum, trout, salmon or any other critter that you’re willing to eat to survive. (If this KA-BAR is a bit too military for your tastes go with a good folding knife like this Kershaw as a more civilian option and one you might buy for your teen kids as well.)
Ever since Anthony’s first day of life, there has been the “typical” complications while at the NICU that, thanks to the help of a very qualified and professional medical staff, he has been able to endure and pass expectations. On August 26th Teila and Chris were able to bring their beautiful baby boy home. As of the writing of this letter, October 16, 2013, Anthony has been staying strong and surviving with only a few minor complications.

Tools may include cutting tools such as saws, axes and hatchets; mechanical advantage aids such as a pry bar or wrecking bar, ropes, pulleys, or a ‘come-a-long hand-operated winch; construction tools such as pliers, chisels, a hammer, screwdrivers, a hand-operated twist drill, vise grip pliers, glue, nails, nuts, bolts, and screws; mechanical repair tools such as an arc welder, an oxy-acetylene torch, a propane torch with a spark lighter, a solder iron and flux, wrench set, a nut driver, a tap and die set, a socket set, and a fire extinguisher. As well, some survivalists bring barterable items such as fishing line, liquid soap, insect repellent, light bulbs, can openers, extra fuels, motor oil, and ammunition.

The interesting thing about this Survival Life is it wasn’t created out of passion for the niche but instead because the Digital Marketer team saw an opportunity to create an authority site that had huge profit potential.

Ignite the tinder and place under the tepee. Use long, steady breaths to spread the flame. As the smaller pieces catch, add progressively larger fuel to the fire.

As mentioned before, you can technically build your own shelter if you have the proper survival gear tools at hand. That being said, it’s always nice to get an upper hand on shelter, as it will also help you stay warm and dry in case of an emergency or survival situation.

Option two: Replace it. Play a different song all the way through, at full volume, in an attempt to chase away your earworm with something more forgettable.

I don’t know if this has been shared or not, but Penicillin and Amoxicillin should be included in the list of medicines, along with cephalosporin (Keflex). All of these I believe can still be found over the counter as farming supplies. Be careful, however, as the dosage for humans will be majorly different than that on the label. I would suggest getting a dosage chart for each antibiotic.

If you have any questions about getting prepared or are you not sure what to do or how to go about it please email us and we will try to help you. If we don’t know the answer we will find it for you. Giving the gift of survival is the greatest gift of all. We have kits for children too!
I think having a satellite phone should be on this list. Once you buy one you can purchase emergency minutes that last for two years, then you re-up. The phone will last forever, and it guarantees you can make a call in any situation, and they aren’t as bulky as they once were. There is actually a device no bigger than my wallet that can turn your smart phone into the satellite phone….preparedness matters!!
In survival, shelter is a must-have. A tent or a tarp is a sure way to keep you and your supplies dry—but only if you can successfully rig it so that you don’t have to wear the tarp like a poncho. A paracord will function as a brilliant tarp-rigger at a moment’s notice.
Forti’s kit of choice is a bit larger and bulkier, but not overbearingly so. It can be worn on a belt in a pouch and includes enough gear to make a longer “unplanned wilderness excursion” survivable with some modicum of basic comfort.
Survival Power: Binoculars are never truly appreciated until a situation that calls for binoculars presents itself. Good binoculars can both aid in hunting and also be essential for long distance navigation by land or by boat (if you’re in a canoe or kayak for example and paddling along a coastline).

The US government’s Homeland Security website provides a list of in-home emergency kit items.[9] The list focuses on the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and materials to maintain body warmth. These basic survival items comprised into a kit are known as a Bug-out bag. The recommended basic emergency kit items include:
I think you’re a little short on security. I wouldn’t dream of bugging out or trying to survive post-TEOTWAWKI without a good handgun (or two) in 9mm Parabellum, a rifle in 5.56/223 Remington (whether AR or otherwise), and at least a 308 bolt action for longer range/harder hits.

Despite what you may think at that time, food is not your priority at all. As we just saw in the rule of threes, lack of food won’t kill you for three days! Your priority is staying warm if it is cold outside.

Plastic/rubber tubing is good for slingshots, tourniquets, can be used as a straw to draw water from holes in the ground, etc. Wire saws are good, too. Though of course they can’t do everything a regular saw can, their portability, your right, makes them a huge asset.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that being in a survival situation would be fun. Wilderness Survival is not a game, there is no reward challenges, and there is no immunity. How do you think you would fare in a survival situation? Could you build a shelter? Could you light a fire without matches? Could you forage for food and purify water? In real life you don’t have luxury items, you don’t get tarps and matches and camping supplies. In real life you may not have any tools except your own two hands. Andrew Pollack, whose daughter was killed in the recent Parkland shooting, appeared on Fox News Sunday and finally added some common sense to the media’s anti-gun hysteria. Pollack blasted the media for making the incident about gun control rather than “school safety.”

A lot of people expect me carry a huge, Rambo-reminiscent survival knife, but in all truth, I’d rather be carrying a wood carving knife. Mora knives are my favorite wood carvers, since their laminated steel blades are strong, long wearing and razor sharp right out of the package. If you take the legendary Mora blade and add a quality spark rod handle insert from Light My Fire, you have the Swedish FireKnife.

If you have a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your survival kit or gear, you can use it to light embers. Hand sanitizers are mostly alcohol that is extremely flammable. Adding just a few drops of hand sanitizer on the embers will produce flames. You can use this flame to start a fire using your char cloth or your cotton balls soaked in Vaseline.

Web Belt Alice Clip Survival Spikes: Well, I did try a few times to put a blade on them, but the only thing I could sharpen was the tip and so that’s why I call ’em SPIKES. And to sharpen ’em you either need a file or a grinder. What’s good about these Alice clip spikes is that you can use’em as both, spear and arrow heads and they can be easily attached or hidden on your belt and other gear.

Survival Power: A military Goretex sleeping bag system can do a good job at keeping you warm — but only to negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit — you’ll have to wear additional layers and craft additional insulation if temperatures drop below negative 10.

The rope is a critical resource in the wild. It is essential to tie things, to make shelter and even in hunting. You can make a robust and sturdy rope from the skins of willow branches. Here is how you can make willow ropes.

If your aim is not that great, maybe your patience is. Another way to catch your breakfast in the wilderness is to set up a trap. Use a section of your bracelet for triggers and snare nooses. Furthermore, the inner strands of the strap can be used as the string of a Paiute Deadfall.
The basic physical instinct is survival. You eat for your survival. You drink for your survival. You play, read et cetera for your leisure. These come after the basic survival instincts. Subconsciously, whatever we do, is somehow related to it.
I just want the items I ordered before I die. If you can have something here within 2 weeks on other orders it shouldn’t ever be a month on any others. If something is on backorder then don’t sell it, or at least tell the customer it’s on backorder and it might be a while before you get it before the customer spends their hard earned money on something they could get somewhere else within days. That’s how you earn respect and trust, that’s how you build a business; on the trust and respect of your customers. Make sure you save and keep up with your emailed receipts and order numbers; if you don’t get one then email them ASAP and ask for it.
Storage: Batteries are the way most of us think of storing power. But, so is a Gas tank. or a Rural propane tank, a heat sink… (I’ll hit the sink and propane tanks again). Sometimes thinking out of the box can solve a real problem storing power. Storing Electricity used to be a huge one. Today we have very reliable large capacity batteries.
I definitely encourage everyone to purchase products from wounded warrior project. .it’s a good cause supporting our returning soldiers and I never leave home without this bracelet on..I endorse what this organization is doing! !
It has all the essentials! Our family has a place where we keep our “outside living” stash- tent, blankets, stove, dining fly, clothes, shoes, etc- and this helped to finish the collection. we also have food for our dog and cat( which we added-not in the kit) So needed!

In this scenario, it’s not enough to just recommend a good lighter — what you need in this case is actually a proven fire starter — something that will help you get a fire going fast if you’re in an emergency that may end shortly in death by hypothermia.

Survival Life Products carry a standing Thirty (30) Day refund period from the date of purchase. If a physical product has been purchased, the customer care department will issue a RMA number. When customers receive a RMA number, they are required to return the contents in full to the following address, the label for returning a physical product should look like this:
Now, love is something that makes every one happy. Everyone likes to be loved. Yeah… so being loved can be the purpose of our life.. But, why would people love us if we don’t love others? If we don’t care about others? If we harm or hurt or kill others? There comes the concept of loving others…. Ahh… Fair enough! I thought….
Why would we carry gold? I can understand the importance of silver because it it $20 an ingot and can be used for trade and barter. Gold is a whopping $1,250 a coin, and no one in a SHTF crisis is going to have change for a purchase.
What about using the cord? Of course I had to tear one apart. I was hoping for a knife free teardown, but I did have to bring out the blade at the end of the 93 second unraveling process. The melted end of the cord wouldn’t fit through the hole in the shackle, so I had to clip off the swollen end of the cord. Upon cutting the end of the cord, the seven inner strands were plain to see. The most surprising part of the operation was the length of cord. I was expecting about five feet of paracord, but instead, I received just over 9 feet of cord. It’s amazing to think that so much cord was woven into such a little item. No wonder the Strap was initially stiff — it was stuffed to the gills.

If you’re not already on “team headlamp,” let’s get one thing straight. The headlamp is to an outdoors person as the internet is to shopping. Once you’ve seen firsthand just how easy and effective it is, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it. Headlamps give you light right where your gaze falls, and they leave both hands free to work. Olympia’s Explorer (EX) Series of headlamps has been designed with outdoor junkies in mind: This series gives us lamps with great features that don’t cost a fortune. This tough aluminum body headlamp casts out a scorching 550 lumens, and it’s perfect for chasing down a blood trail after dark, cooking in camp, or working under the hood of your truck. The Cree XM-L LED bulb delivers a beam of light that can reach out 135 meters, and it has five lighting modes, including a distress strobe. It’s even waterproof down to one meter.
I purchased a credit card knife for a few bucks at http://survivallife.com/credit-card-knife/. I signed up for NOTHING else. Immediately after purchase they give you all of these internet marketing type offers (upsells). I declined all of them. Afterwards I see that I’ve been billed some sort of “lamplighter society” scam membership. The lamplighter society is some membership type scam.
When things go wrong in the wilderness, you have one priority; Survive! The Henry Arms Survival Kit was built with that goal in mind. This survival kit, built to fit into a pack or cargo pocket, contains the most needed items in sufficient quantities to handle just about any wilderness survival application. Versions of this kit are currently in use by numerous organizations, to include the U.S. Army.
Lifeboat survival kits are stowed in inflatable or rigid lifeboats or life rafts; the contents of these kits are mandated by coast guard or maritime regulations. These kits provide basic survival tools and supplies to enable passengers to survive until they are rescued. In addition to relying on lifeboat survival kits, many mariners will assemble a “ditch bag” or “abandon ship bag” containing additional survival supplies. Lifeboat survival kit items typically include:
This list has nothing to do with Survival, come on, that pack is heavy. A Samikniv, a metal water bottle, warm and waterproof clothing. The list is for a canoe trip or a if you are living a permanent place for decades.
More Than Just Surviving is a survival blog that concentrates on wilderness survival, preparedness, and gear. Run by a two-person husband and wife team, Thomas & Elise Xavier, this blog’s mission is to offer a down to earth resource for both survivalists and preppers alike.
Here’s a poem by the 13th century poet and scholar Rumi that go right to whenever I need help to stabilize myself and feel good. It always makes me smile. Rumi describes life as like a ‘guest house’ where all kinds of things come and go and how we always have the choice to welcome it all, no matter what happens, and not to be a helpless victim. What does it say to you?
Members’ Area – After paying for a membership to the Lamplighter society (more about this below), you’ll gain access to all current reports, the full archive, the entire survival guide library, in addition to exclusive interviews.
The second we got an air gun, Thomas immediately figured it would be absolutely perfect for a SHTF scenario. You could score some small game fairly easily, even in the city. There’s always squirrels and birds, and sometimes even rabbits to be had.
If you’re struggling with the whole authority versus niche thing, this post on EmpireFlippers examines both and their pro’s and con’s and there’s a good video from Jill and Josh of ScrewTheNineToFive worth watching.

If you are fishing for food in the wild, you can catch more fish if you cast your bait while facing into the wind. It is a known fact that 99% fish swim toward the wind. Fishing into the wind will allow you to cast a bait in front of the fish rather than behind.

Let’s hope you won’t be dealing with any “127 Hours” situations, but severe bleeding can be a real problem when trudging around in the unknown. Arterial bleeding is the most severe, characterized by bright-red, pulsating blood flow.

On December 1, 2015, Rawles released the novel Land of Promise, the first book in the Counter-Caliphate Chronicles novel series. This science fiction novel is a geopolitical thriller that is a considerable departure from his previous Patriots thriller novel series. Set in the late 2130s, Land of Promise fictionally describes the world under the economic and military domination of a Global Islamic Caliphate, brought about by a fictional new branch of Islam, called The Thirdists. The novel also describes the establishment of a Christian nation of refuge called The Ilemi Republic, in East Africa. This is the first book in a planned six-novel series. It is the first release from Liberty Paradigm Publishing, a publishing venture launched by Rawles in partnership with his literary agent Robert Gottlieb of Trident Media Group.[62][63]

We plan to continue bringing you useful information that will be worth your time. Like our earth based hunter-gatherer ancestors, a good survivalist has a relationship with a wide variety of diverse species that can all serve as foods, depending on the season and location. Take a look at this wilderness survival food list to learn more.

If nobody knows where you went, when you went there or when you were meant to be back, your chances of getting help in a survival situation become a whole lot worse. Be clever, plan well and you’ll be absolutely fine.

Most ultralight emergency shelters allow condensation to build up inside as you get warm, leaving your clothes soaking wet. With the Escape Bivvy, condensation is no longer an issue. The proprietary fabric lets moisture escape as it keeps rain, snow and wind out, while reflecting your body heat back to you. Imported. Opened dimensions: 84L x 36W.
Weight: 8.5 oz.

The kits provided for Soviet and Russian Cosmonauts are optimised for survival in the temperate and sub-arctic mountains, forests and grasslands in the east of the country. Soyuz spacecraft kits include food rations, water bottles, warm clothing, rope for making a shelter using the capsule’s parachute, fish hooks and miscellaneous other survival gear. A specially designed pistol, the TP-82, was provided to defend against predators such as wolves or bears. It was able to fire conventional bullets, shotgun cartridges and flares; the folding stock could be used as a shovel and it also had a fold-out machete.[8]

This device is fully operable with only one hand. There are spring action needlenose and standard pliers as well as wire cutters, two knife blades one straight the other serrated, 4 screwdrivers including one Phillips head, 1 saw blade, 1 strap cutter, oxygen tank wrench, can opener, bottle opener and a cleaning rod attachment. All the blades and tools lock in place and are composed of stainless steel. The whole crazy intricate multi bladed multi-tool is only four and a half inches in length, making it a bargain for survivalists. This nifty device which might one day save your precious life, can be found in retail stores or online for around 80 big bad bucks.

• Snow: The energy it requires for your body to absorb the water from snow is high. Instead of eating the snow, melt it first. This can easily be done over a fire or with a camp stove. If those aren’t options, use the sun. Accelerate the process by chopping up ice and hanging it in a water bag in direct sunlight. If there’s no sun, use your body’s heat.

This means going for waterproof versions of equipment (i.e. watches and compasses) and getting equipment that will keep your other stuff protected from water. Always use containers that have waterproof seals and never mix anything damp with all your other drop stuff. This is especially important for food containers, because moisture can only hasten spoilage. Water may be essential for hydration, but for everything else, staying as dry as possible is a must for survival.

A bit of a luxury item in a survival scenario but drinking water out of your hands is not convenient. Plus, if you happen to have coffee, soup, or freeze-dried meals you’ll need a bowl or cup to eat these meals.

Try getting Gamma lids. These make a great seal. They are not cheap….but I’ve had mine for years. Don’t stack them on top of each other without plywood or heavy cardboard between levels. Available on emergency Essentials and sometimes at your loocal Wally World.

Astronauts are provided with survival kits due to the difficulty of predicting where a spacecraft will land on its return to earth, especially in the case of an equipment failure. In early US space flights, the kit was optimised for survival at sea; the one provided for John Glenn on the first American space flight in Friendship 7 contained a life raft, pocket knife, signaling mirror, shark repellent, seawater desalting tablets, sunscreen, soap, first aid kit, and other items.[5] A survival kit was provided for the Apollo program which was …designed to provide a 48-hour postlanding (water or land) survival capability for three crewmen between 40 degrees North and South latitudes.[6] It contained a survival radio, a survival light assembly, desalter kits, a machete, sunglasses, water cans, sun lotion, a blanket, a pocket knife, netting and foam pads.[7]

• Digging for water: Certain plants indicate water sources are nearby. Identify plants, such as cattails, cottonwood or willows, and dig a seep hole until you reach moisture. Wait for water to collect in the hole.

I too am using Home Depot orange buckets. Very good sealing gasketed lids and the price is right. I contacted the manufacturer and they assured me they are not food grade. My bags and oxygen absorbers arrive tomorrow, and it begins…..

Great sites indeed. I must have been on all of them in the past year. I’m more interested in the alternative energy area…rather than prepping. But you are right…I found a lot of great articles. Mac Slavo is my all time favorite though.

In my version of BACK-UP power there are no sacred Cows. Of import is, where your power system will be used/installed. In the City, or suburbs these would require permits and skilled/knowledgable installers. While a system in a Farming Ranching setting might require other priorities. And lastly a remote installation. (Getting the stuff to the site might be difficult). Weight these criteria for each situation. Do not let someone talk you into a ONE-SIZE-FITS ALL.

This signal is literally a lifesaver, so you need to know how to do it in both light and sound. The signal is represented by three dots followed by three dashes, followed by three more dots. In sound, this means having three quick taps followed by three slow taps, and then three more quick taps. The same can be applied to using light signals. Make sure you practice this before you go out there.

Working several thousand miles from one’s home country can lead to homesickness and a feeling of being disconnected from peers. Other links direct one to information about career-advancing opportunities both in the United States and in other countries. Lastly, one can read the stories of those who have already experienced life as a postdoc in the United States. No, I’m not writing about David or myself, even if we do qualify.Over the years (this blog had its fourth birthday in January), I’ve written a lot about old tech and I’ve gotten some feedback that questions the wisdom of choosing, say, liquid fueled…

There are couple of other sorts of people too, like one who spent their life searching for a sole purpose of their life (why do they exist here and bearing sort of such questions in their head), then there are others who sacrifice their life for others.

Interesting list, but I don’t see a knife sharpener. Lansky and Smith both make pocket size models for short term field use by those who can’t free hand a whet stone. Spyderco and Lansky also make systems more suitable for long term use. There are others as well, some quite pricy. Might be a good review topic.

With a bit of ingenuity you’ve built yourself a shelter that costs much less than a popular brand name tent and should be able to withstand more wear and tear and protect from rain and wind, even snow. In a time of collapse and evacuation, it also catches less attention than something bright blue or orange or yellow like a popular brand name tent.

High power LED light (able to have batteries replaced, and carry an extra battery), white lens, with signaling capabilities. Strobe versions are available for some lights. Use lithium cells only, due to superior shelf life.

The US Army uses several basic survival kits, mainly for aviators, some of which are stored in carrying bags. Aviators in planes with ejection seats have survival kits in a vest and the seat pan, the survival vest worn by US helicopter crews also contains some basic survival items.

If you keep focusing the bright light onto some dry kindle, you will soon start a fire. The focal length of your improvised device is smaller than a magnifying glass so, you will have to hold this improvised device about 1-2 inches from the kindling.

I bought this knife just because I was placing an order for some other items with BUDK and figured another $3, can’t go wrong. Well, it turned out to be one of my favorite knives. It came razor sharp out of the box. The sheath is worth more than $3 alone. The blade fits very nicely in the sheath. I have seen similar products to this one for many times the cost. But, there is no need to spend more than $3. This knife perfect for hiking, backpacking etc. I have had this knife for 3 years, and have been very rough on it just because I know I can replace it for $3 if I need to. But, I haven’t done any damage to the knife or the sheath during all of the heavy usage. With this knife you have only $3 to loose and solid utility/survival knife to gain. Just buy one.

It is exactly what it sounds like! If it is dark already and you don’t have time to look for an alternative, find a bunch of leaves and twigs and make a mound of sorts. It should be about 2 feet high and as long as your height. Once the pile is assembled, you can crawl under it. It is a natural sleeping bag that will keep you warm.

According to the Survival Life website, membership to the Lamplighter society provides an easy, practical way of obtaining information related to survival preparedness, without having to spend years of trial and error. With this in mind, membership is claimed to provide the following benefits:

A man in Seattle has had his gun confiscated by police after breaking no laws. The police took his gun without a warrant and without pressing any charges.  Tyranny has officially taken hold on American soil.

Ah – I must’ve missed that part, my apologies. 1 million in SALES is definitely viable, if they are selling/promoting expensive products. Though still to my point, if you are using this website as a proof of concept for your marketing business – as they are – they should be transparent and disclose what operating costs were.

This is the last Swiss+Tech (ST) tool review for a while, I promise. I’ve gone through the ones I have had for a while as well as a couple that I bought just to evaluate, and this is the last of the new ones. Normally people save the best for last, b…

But to quote the wise men who have walked this fair earth in ages past, questionable advice is technically better than no advice—so here are ten unusual survival tips that could end up saving your life. And as a disclaimer, don’t actually try number three.

Let’s do the math: At 2500 degrees, you should be able to ignite your tinder bundle and start a fire within just a few seconds. With 35 minutes of continuous burn time, that means you should be able to start approximately 150 – 200 emergency fires with just one small bottle of butane fuel.

This is great! My internet cut out for a couple hours this morning, so I thought to myself, “I really need to download some resource books.” Lo and behold, I come here, and there’s a great list of free downloads. Perfect timing… Thanks, MD!

Planning to take a relaxing boat ride soon? For the sake of safety, let’s just say things go sideways and the engine stalls in the middle of a freak ocean storm. Would you be able to survive? While you may have the skills to draw an imaginary friend out of a volleyball, it turns out that there are actual necessary steps that must be followed in order to survive the wilderness.

I think I saw a line item for a Generator. I would like to add a few tid-bits if you are leaning that way. Don’t rush out after a large emergency and trying to get one (the unit or it and it installed). I would suggest a package that incorporates the off-the-grid craze ie solar and/or wind with the typical back-up power system. (Mainly for the Batteries)… IMO A proper system. First, it should be large enough to supply all of your electrical needs. (NOT WANTS). Second, it would be a multi-fuel; and multi-source system. If you just purchased an Electrical generator off the shelf. It has a really small fuel reservoir, and most runs on only one type of fuel. Gasoline.

In arctic or alpine areas, survival kits may have additional cold weather clothing (winter hats and gloves), sleeping bags, chemical hand warmer packets, sun glasses/snow goggles, snowshoes, a collapsible shovel, a snare wire for small animals, a frying pan, a camp stove, camp stove fuel, a space blanket, matches, a whistle, a compass, tinder, medical equipment, a flint strike, a wire saw, extra socks and a tent designed for arctic use.

We’ve thought about doing a bug out bag guide so many times before it’d be impossible to count, but somehow in 4 years, still haven’t actually published one. The why comes down to the fact that, unlike comprehensive lists – like of all…

Most of us have heard of vital signs or checking vitals at one point or another, and these are the go-to indicators that are used to assess basic functions of the body that are essential for our survival.  They cover heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and temperature, and they normally fall within a specific range …

Like other portable water filters though it has it’s limits — a Lifestraw can’t filter salt (to filter salt water you’ll have to distil it) or heavy metals, chemicals or viruses. In a survival situation or disaster you’ll have to use your head. Avoid drinking from ground water sources in a populated area following severe flooding or a massive earthquake. This ground water can be contaminated with chemicals and sewage. You’ll want to move further out of the area to a water source that is less likely to be contaminated with chemicals and sewage before using your Lifestraw.

I didn’t see this invaluable item item on the list or in any comments thereafter so I’ll request a good ol’ 5ft x 7ft wool blanket. I’ve used mine to sit on around the camp fire and keep myself off the warmth sapping ground. Also great for keeping warm by the fire just wrapped up in. It won’t burn from sparks either which makes it invaluable for wrapping around your (probably lite weight and highly combustable) sleeping bag. Sheds moisture alright to keep any goose down bags from losing insulation. This is under the assumption that you are sleeping outdoors under nothing more than a tarp shelter until a proper basecamp and shelter can be established. Once a shelter is established (if you dont have / bring / or burned down your tent) the wool blanket also makes for a kickass door.

The average adult human can survive up to three weeks, depending on the individual’s health, background, etc. as well as the environmental conditions within which the starvation is taking place. That being said, you cannot survive more then three days without water, so when you hike, always bring water, as you never can be too sure.

I always have waterproof equipment in my survival kit. They may cost you a bit more, but they can save your life in some situation. Invest in the waterproof watch, waterproof matches, a waterproof compass to name a few.

Made from sticks, leaves, vines or bark, materials for this effective structure are often plentiful. Location is vital, so stay away from brittle trees, questionable foliage and trenches. No time to build a shelter? “Always have a spare coat, but a trash bag makes a great poncho,” adds Hawke.

This to me seemed to explain-  one, why members of several species just die after laying eggs or after mating. In some species such as ‘the preying mantis’, the female eats the head of the male once it finishes mating or rather once she is sure that the male has ‘fulfilled its purpose’. Second, when we see the life of certain kinds such as the dinosaurs or others which have become extinct, what can we consider their purpose as? I’d say they were just experiments of nature in the process to manufacture ‘fitter’ beings (evolution) capable of surviving its whims. Again- modify DNA to increase its chances of survival.

Have an escape plan. The phrases “I won’t keep you” and “Give my regards to [mutual acquaintance]” are your allies. When the conversation reaches a dead end, employ them. Try these tips to make small talk from expert minglers.

Real binoculars are for the wilderness. Get yourself a pair of real binoculars. Outdoor Life rated several binoculars, most coming in at over $1000, with one priced at $2700. That is steep! But Outdoor Life did give a high rating to a cheaper pair — The Alpen Apex XP 8×42 is priced at about $300 and received Outdoor Life’s Great Buy tag. If you have the money to spend, sure, go ahead and spend top dollar, buy the best of the best. You will get more bang for your buck. But you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck as well with the Alpen Apex 8×42 for a lot less.

A smoke signal was one of the oldest ways to communicate long before the age of cell phones. You can use this method to attract attention to yourself. Creating a smoke signal is easy. All you need to do is burn something that will create a thick smoke, and the smoke will do the rest for you.

M.D. I see that you have the book “Gardening in a Failed Economy” as a sponsor. Have you read the book? Is it any good? I don’t mind spending the 15FRNs but rather not buy into some hype publisher that is peddling his latter wares and previously unknown knowledge from the Maya or some other krampf.

It’s about creating a site that keeps people engaged, gets them clicking and lowers bounce rate and if you read about SurvivalLife over on DigitalMarketer.com you’ll see them talk about how they initally went with a really clean design similar to Uncrate.com but their bounce rate was terrible so they made the site really messy and ugly and bounce rate dropped dramatically.

I bought this for my kids 72 hr emergency kit. She is 11 and needs tools that are easy and organized. We went over all the features, how to use the knife, read the booklet inside and everything else. It’s small and lightweight. It’s a great addition to her go bags we bought a second for my who is a teenager. I may end up getting one for myself.

This one hits the spot for family gatherings or even gathering around to watch movies or sports events on television. It’s a little heartier and tastier than the basic recipe. Another variation we sometimes make is to substitute a can of meat/beef chili for the sausage and salsa/milk. However, we prefer this version best.

A food dehydrator is essentially an oven. However unlike a conventional oven it’s a low temperature oven. Why do they call it a food dehydrator? Because it’s designed to draw out the moisture from food. To dry it out. Why would you want to dry out your food? Because certain …

Other clinical variables, such as serum protein levels or dose of concomitant medications may change over the course of a study. Cox models may be extended for such time-varying covariates.
