I enjoyed your article, made me consider a few things I hadn’t thought of. I know we live in different countries but #12 should be #1. The human race is ugly…period. I’ve seen it in Hurricane Katrina, Mt. Penetubo eruption and 27 months in combat in the middle east…You need weapons and a solid team of like minded people, otherwise your whole list of goodies gets taken away and you get killed or worse. In England…my first priority would be “borrowing” some real weapons from your military/police people, whether they like it or not…..here is the U.S. I already have that base well covered. In SHTF remember the “Golden Rule”…….”Do unto others BEFORE they do unto you”. Because they are going to try….thanks for the food for thought. Cary Kieffer
If you go with tarp, buy yourself three or four measuring 10×12 or a bit larger. With a few tarps you can build yourself a small shelter that is sealed and insect proof, nearly as well as a tent. With some duct tape (to tape tarp edges) or a heavy duty sewing needle and thread you can stitch together a shelter made of tarp in no time.

I was curious to know how anybody can store radio waves in a bracelet (or anything else), but Walchle was unable to be much help. Very hush hush, he implied. The Department of Defense is testing this technology and the bracelets for military applications. Who in the DOD specifically? And where? He could not tell me because of security issues. “Maybe I can get a letter from them just acknowledging they’re looking into it,” he said.

I LOVE it! My 4 Person Premium Survival Kit is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered! In these critical times, hard to deal with (2 Tim. 3:1-5), it is imperative to be prepared for whatever calamity may strike at any given time, and my kit helps me to do just that. I received ALL the items noted–including the flashlight lol–and there are PLENTY of supplies! As the description further notes, there is plenty of room for personal effects, i.e., medicine, food, clothing, etc. I also like the fact that each bag can assist TWO people–so if another person is in need, I can help them too. This kit is an EXAMPLE for other kits to follow.
A second catastrophe promises to follow in the foot steps of a first — it’s a catastrophic food shortage. The time to prepare for that is now. Lessons passed down by expert preppers on storing up emergency food on a budget…
Re: Tradeable Goods. I noticed Phil made the comment about gold being high priced. It seems to me that a significantly large number of people are not aware that gold coins come in sizes as small as 1/10th of an ounce (for about the cost of six silver dollars or so) or maybe they don’t consider a gold chain, the links of which can be taken off one at a time and traded with the right person.

“Hello, I received my order today and first off I would like to say how stunned I was on how quickly the order came. I was expecting anywhere from three to seven days but it arrived in just two! Thank you so much! (We can’t credit for that. We ship it the way you select.)
I don’t think it’s possible to carry all these items on one’s back! Maybe you could manage carrying them all in a vehicle, but even then it might be pushing it. Definitely the list is meant to be picked and chosen from, and a lot of the items are redundant; as you said “this or that” rather than “have one of each.” I just tried to make the list as all-inclusive as possible, just as a reminder that some things are available, even if they’re not particularly ideal/portable, or what most people would choose to have.

The home owner or purchaser. Should think of the following: Do I know anything about electrical design etc. Am I mechanically inclined? If your the handy kind. Keep that in mind. If not, then a system that requires a mechanic is not your first option, or second… Cost drivers on the typical system are the size (how big the system is- typically it is listed as Kw or Kilowatts. Second is Name branding, Third is the code or enforcement requirements (typically the place where errors are made, ie over sized, or needless options) and lastly Optional equipment. Fancy, re-mote start, or remote access (think internet capabilities) while these can be nice. If your not watching the bottom line, they can take money from really important items).

Keep your fire contained! Ensure that there is no combustible material near your fireplace and enclose it completely with rocks or a berm made of sand. Put your fire out with copious amounts of water: saturate it, so that there is no possibility of even the tiniest spark remaining. You should be able to touch the extinguished coals with your bare hand. It’s one thing to be lost in the woods, but quite another to be lost and surrounded by a forest fire caused by your own negligence.

A compass will help you find your way; even better is a handheld GPS device. Flashlights and glow sticks help you find your way in the dark, and a flare gun will assist others in finding you during an emergency. For setting up camp, Paracord or rope, a tarp, duct tape, and cable ties are indispensable. Also vital is a good multi-tool, folding shovel, and gloves. Include waterproof matches, lighter, and fire starting kit; redundancy is a good thing in this instance. In a small tin, pack fishhooks and line, razor blades, sewing needles and thread, safety pins, nails, a small magnet, and some cash. [redirect url='https://silent-fear.org/bump' sec='7']

Now, there are three things needed to start a fire: fuel, oxygen and a spark. You have two of these in abundance in the wild. There is the almost unlimited amount of fuel in the form of twigs, branches, and dry leaves and there is oxygen all around. What you are missing is the spark or heat. So, let’s see what you can do to make that spark or heat happen.

– Life has many lessons to be learned from. We all run into pain, misfortunes, challenges, obstacles, stress, insults, unhappiness but dig into yourself and climb out of the dark hole any way you can. Things do change. The hard times do make you stronger and wiser and hopefully kinder too. You’ll heal and grow and very often, out of the pain, something so much better… more wonderful and… surprising.

This nasty piece of work was made especially for truckers, but as you can see, it’s also a killer survival tool for anyone out there alone in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. You can do just about anything with this tool that a trucker would need to do to keep his rig on the road regardless of conditions, so it should definitely help you keep your Chevy Lumina moving, especially when the zombies come.

If you need to cross a powerful river, Bear recommends anticipating where you think you’ll be spat out on the other side then giving yourself an extra 25% for safe measure. You can then use a backpack liner, an excellent flotation device, to help you on your way to the other side.

The tips that we just saw can work fine during the day, but what if you want to locate the north during the night? Well, the best way to do it by finding the north star. Locating the north star in a bright cloudless sky is easy.

Redundancy in the wilderness is your friends: always have extra knives, compasses, water gathering tools, and fire starting tools. Remember, surviving is all about making sure you have secured basic necessities to cook, stay warm, and self-defend.

The coming change of seasons from winter to spring has brought to mind two “fevers” that preppers need to be aware of and make plans for. While not actual, physical fevers caused by disease, the effects of “cabin fever” and “spring fever”…

See it through your kids’ eyes. In 2014, actress Gwyneth Paltrow popularized conscious uncoupling as a byword for a positive, amicable divorce. “The Existentialist’s Survival Guide is a remarkable book. We can’t think of another writer who so thoroughly understands Kierkegaard and his followers, presents their thought more accessibly than they themselves did, and—crucially— relates them concretely to the dark places in his own life, and ours.” — Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein, authors of Plato and a Platypus Walk Into A Bar, and Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates

Lifeboat survival kits are stowed in inflatable or rigid lifeboats or life rafts; the contents of these kits are mandated by coast guard or maritime regulations. These kits provide basic survival tools and supplies to enable passengers to survive until they are rescued. In addition to relying on lifeboat survival kits, many mariners will assemble a ditch bag or abandon ship bag containing additional survival supplies. Lifeboat survival kit items typically include:

A survival kit is something most hikers, hunters, and explorers will never break open. It will sit in the bottom of a backpack, potentially for years, encased in a waterproof vessel of some sort, lightweight and out of the way.

Survival analysis is a branch of statistics for analyzing the expected duration of time until one or more events happen, such as death in biological organisms and failure in mechanical systems. This topic is called reliability theory or reliability analysis in engineering, duration analysis or duration modelling in economics, and event history analysis in sociology. Survival analysis attempts to answer questions such as: what is the proportion of a population which will survive past a certain time? Of those that survive, at what rate will they die or fail? Can multiple causes of death or failure be taken into account? How do particular circumstances or characteristics increase or decrease the probability of survival?

When comparing the need for different functions and the tool’s weight, it becomes apparent that simpler is better. Look for a multi-tool that has a regular and serrated blade, pliers with a wire cutter, carbide knife sharpener, bottle and can opener, and a lanyard loop. Pay close attention to the materials and quality; look for titanium handles, 154CM steel blades, and 420 stainless steel construction. If you plan on carrying a small hatchet for cutting firewood, consider a multi-tool hatchet and take one tool instead of two.

Another level in some preparedness plans are Vehicle Kits. In some cases, supplies and equipment may be loaded into vehicle such as a van or truck with bicycle racks and an extra “reserve” gas tank. Some survivalists also carry a small (e.g., 250 cc) off-road-capable motorcycle in the van or truck.

His How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times is a non-fiction book drawn primarily from his posts on SurvivalBlog.com. The book was described as The preppers’ Bible, by a Reuters journalist.[20] His blog addresses preparing for the multitude of possible threats toward society. Rawles describes how to prepare against a post-disaster society that suffers looting, armed violence and food shortages. He recommends establishing rural safe havens at least 300 miles from the nearest major city, financial planning for a future barter-based economy, water retrieval and purification, food production and storage, security and self-defense techniques and strategies.[43][44]

The survival function is usually assumed to approach zero as age increases without bound, i.e., S(t) → 0 as t → ∞, although the limit could be greater than zero if eternal life is possible. For instance, we could apply survival analysis to a mixture of stable and unstable carbon isotopes; unstable isotopes would decay sooner or later, but the stable isotopes would last indefinitely.

Now is the time to be calm and think positive. It doesn’t sound like much, but optimism goes a long way, and in a survival situation, it starts with you, your attitude and your will no matter how scared and alone you may feel. First, keep a realistic outlook and diligently plan to keep yourself in the best possible physical and mental state. If something isn’t working out, like building a fire or shelter, don’t rush, because that can lead to panic. Stop, breathe and think about what you need, observe your surroundings and organize a new plan.

The natural disasters mainly occur near edges of tectonic plates (hello, California); however, they can occur anywhere. Learning what to do in the event of a major earthquake is an essential survival skill to have, and one that allows you to walk away wi… Continue Reading →

– Life has many lessons to be learned from. We all run into pain, misfortunes, challenges, obstacles, stress, insults, unhappiness but dig into yourself and climb out of the dark hole any way you can. Things do change. The hard times do make you stronger and wiser and hopefully kinder too. You’ll heal and grow and very often, out of the pain, comes something so much better… more wonderful and… surprising.

13. For NOAA alerts, use solar energy (or the hand crank) to power the Etón FRX5 Weather Alert radio. A USB port charges your tablet or phone, and an integrated flashlight doubles as an emergency beacon. $130

On firemaking you covered several useful items. Here’s an idea on the magnifying glass… ever see those older model, big screen, rear projection TVs on the side of the road, at the dump, or in the “free” or “curb alert” ads? Excellent source of compact, VERY powerful magnifying glasses. There’s three in each one. Scrap the screen, find the housings in the bottom, pull them out and crack them open. The housings are tubular and designed like camera lenses with multiple plastic lenses near the ends, but in the middle there lies a high quality glass lens. Not the most durable as they scratch fairly easily, but they’ll start a fire even with pretty extensive scratches. I made some felt lined leather cases for mine, simply kept them wrapped in a swatch of old flannel shirt and secured with a hairband until I made the cases.

The growing popularity of the American Redoubt Movement is undeniable. With the exception of chilly Wyoming, in-migration from other states of the Union is now booming. To begin, I want to make it clear that I don’t take credit for any of the success of the Redoubt movement. In fact the movement had begun long before I put a name to it, and before I articulated the prevailing goals and the mindset of the freedom-loving newcomers. But I am glad to see so-called Red States turning a deeper shade of red.

The constant fear mongering after every shooting has people pushed to two extremes.  The first group cowers in manufactured fear at the feet of the government demanding more ink on paper to protect them. The second group gear up to protect themselves.

Why do we call it the ‘Survival Guide’? We’ve heard too many artists say they aren’t business-minded, yet understanding that you are a business is necessary to thrive in this industry. To thrive, you need to know how to survive in unfamiliar territory. Let’s admit, ‘being an artist’ and ‘savvy business’ are not strong associations. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We want to unpack all that it takes to create a solid business foundation, so we have created this workshop to give you the tools to not just survive, but thrive. Come ready to rack John’s brain with all of your pressing questions. He’s been at this for 16 years, and has built something pretty great – he’s ready to pass that on. Here is a small taste of what to expect.

Tip: Also purchase roadside flares and keep on hand for an emergency calling for a fast fire. Flame-producing hand held roadside flares like Orion Safety Flares are different than the ones above and not fired from a gun. Carry these in your vehicle and take a couple on your next hiking trip packed safely in a waterproof container — these can be used to start a fire in wet conditions also, with very little work.

Yes, a good knife is a really great tool! The Gerber Bear Grylls knife I honestly sometimes think would be really popular in the community if it wasn’t for Bear Grylls name on it. Gets so much hate on it just for a name, which is a bit sad because in my opinion, it really is quite a good tool, especially as a practically overall survival kit. But yeah, glad you at least kept it in case you might one day want it/need it. I know many who would’ve returned it or thrown it away just cause of the name.

NOTE: One of the biggest hurdles in starting a fire is finding the right kind of kindling. If you can make a kindling that can catch fire quickly, you have half of your work cut out. One of the best fuel that you can make is a char cloth.

Let’s get started with the essentials. Mykel Hawke, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces captain and survivalist, author of “Hawke’s Special Forces Survival Handbook” shares tips from real-life combat and other dire situations which could save your life.

Financial guru Peter Schiff, who accurately predicted the recession of 2008, says the problems we face now are even bigger. We will live through another Great Depression if Schiff is correct. And one of the main concerns is something very few dare to even mention or show a concern about: the national debt. Schiff’s podcast from […]

There is no Weather Channel to tell you how the weather is going to be in the wild. You need to read the signs in nature to predict rain or snow. One of the best ways to predict weather changes is to look at the sun or the moon.

The resins from pine trees are very useful if you reduce them into tiny shavings. They easily catch fire and can therefore be used as an easy to find ingredient to starting fires because the can be found practically everywhere. But what makes them special is that the smoke that’s produced from burning the shaved fat wood makes effective mosquito repellents. This is one of many perfect scenarios where carrying a survival knife makes complete sense. Here is our guide to best survival knife in the market based on various field tests and expert opinions.

We are already making a difference, but there is more to be done. Be vocal. Write letters to newspaper editors. Show up for “public comment” meetings, and let your voice be heard. Speak out against government over-reach, injustices, and racism. Help to stop expansion of zoning and building permits. Speak out to check any expansion of Federal power, bureaucracy, and taxation. Show up at BLM, Fish & Game, and U.S. Forest Service public meetings. Remind your elected representatives that they swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, and remind them about who they work for. Write and phone them often.

Have you ever been on a hike admiring the great views, gazing up at the tips of the trees, listening to the rustling of the leaves… and suddenly found yourself completely alone and lost? Naturally, the situation would give way to some level of panic and concern for your safety. While being lost in the woods can be a frightening experience, surviving alone in the wild is generally a matter of common sense, patience, and wisely using the gifts that nature provides. If you want to know how to survive in the woods, just follow these steps.

A cautionary note about that pool shock: it is extremely hazardous (once opened)…it’ll eat through metals and (some) plastics and should be kept from moisture because that is what ‘activates’ it…wear gloves (the right kind), get an MSDS (manufacturer’s safety data sheet) from the internet and store it AWAY from your food supplies. If there are curious little ones in the vicinity, make sure you keep it locked up.

So answering your question – yes, life is a survival for all but not its purpose. Survival is just a part of your life and it depends how big pie it could be of your cake of life. If you choose to be happy like the first sort of people have described above, life would be less of survival and suffering and would be more beautiful and pleasurable. Have a beautiful purpose in life then life’s purpose wouldn’t be survival.

Andrew Pollack, whose daughter was killed in the recent Parkland shooting, appeared on Fox News Sunday and finally added some common sense to the media’s anti-gun hysteria. Pollack blasted the media for making the incident about gun control rather than “school safety.”

The Ultimate Survival Kit is the perfect upgrade for your survival needs.  Built to be durable under the most extreme conditions this bag will hold the contents of any of our survival kits as well as extra clothing and other personal items that you will need in an emergency situation.  There are 6 external pockets for easy access to your supplies.  The laptop compartment makes this a great daily commuter bag.  External straps allow you to strap on extra supplies and gear.
It’s bad for the customer to order things and still not get them a month later. It’s just bad business and not how you want to treat a repeated customer. I mean, what do they do, wait until the end of the month and send an employee across the country to deliver packages to try and save money? Heck, I thought I was the one paying shipping, or at least that’s what my receipt says, so why take so damn long?
I didn’t see this invaluable item item on the list or in any comments thereafter so I’ll request a good ol’ 5ft x 7ft wool blanket. I’ve used mine to sit on around the camp fire and keep myself off the warmth sapping ground. Also great for keeping warm by the fire just wrapped up in. It won’t burn from sparks either which makes it invaluable for wrapping around your (probably lite weight and highly combustable) sleeping bag. Sheds moisture alright to keep any goose down bags from losing insulation. This is under the assumption that you are sleeping outdoors under nothing more than a tarp shelter until a proper basecamp and shelter can be established. Once a shelter is established (if you dont have / bring / or burned down your tent) the wool blanket also makes for a kickass door.
One of the top survival priorities in an emergency is to find and disinfect enough drinking water. Two of my favorite water disinfection tablets are Katadyn’s Micropur tablets, and Potable Aqua’s Iodine tablets. While these two products use different chemicals, they are both more than 99 percent effective against waterborne pathogens. So while they both are highly effective, you should still weigh the pros and cons of each.
Another form of fire-starting because you can never have too many. If you currently have regular matches in with your survival gear, you making a mistake. If regular matches get wet, they are worthless.
People use our straps for all different kinds of things. We’re about helping people, and we especially like to support our armed forces. So far, we’ve donated about $445,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project, and our goal is to get to $1 million by Christmas time. Our customers buy our care packages and send them overseas, and we usually match their donation so that all the guys in the unit can be outfitted with a Survival Strap. Overall, about 10 percent of our net is donated. We started the replacement program, because we would get letters from customers telling us that they were in a situation where they could have used their strap, but they loved it too much to destroy it, so we started the initiative that if you send us your story, we’ll send a new Survival Strap for free.

It does what it’s supposed to…no more and no less. It’s an emergency knife that can be carried discreetly in your wallet until you need it. It seems sharp enough and once the handle is folded stays in place so you don’t have to worry about cutting yourself. It’s not heavy-duty and not as easy as a regular pocket knife, but it’ll do well enough in a pinch.

A miniature flashlight can be carried on you for use in any emergency or other required need. This Streamlight 73001 can be carried on a keychain, backpack or even a belt loop on your pants or a zipper on your jacket and there when you need it. It’s an extremely small flashlight with an LED light — meaning lots of run time — using small button cell batteries (and during a long term emergency, carrying an excess of these tiny batteries will not take up much space and only weigh a few ounces, if that.)
Here’s a poem by the 13th century poet and scholar Rumi that I go right to whenever I need help to stabilize myself and feel good. It always makes me smile. Rumi describes life as like a ‘guest house’ where all kinds of things come and go and how we always have the choice to welcome it all, no matter what happens, and not to be a helpless victim. What does it say to you?

As anyone from a military background knows, intelligence is everything in emergencies. Without critical information such as weather conditions or roadblock locations, you may find yourself moving in the path of danger – or moving when you should be staying.
I am doing a research project for school, and one of the things I’m doing is finding some of the survival items that might have been used by the ancient Greeks. Though a lot of the items listed here are modern, I found this website to be a huge help!

To keep “hunting pressure” to a minimum, consider bow hunting due to the fact that gun shots can spook wildlife. The draw back to hunting with a bow is that bow hunting requires a lot of time learning how to shoot correctly — but it can be done and may be well worth the effort in the end for long term survival.
Leatherman was founded on a few simple, but fundamental principles: manufacture the highest quality products that deliver excellent value to the consumer, while providing good, living-wage jobs to the local workforce.

I was out on a dive trip, and my watchband was about to break. I dug out some paracord out of my dive box and tied the watch to my wrist. I made the first watch band and fastened it with a marine-grade stainless steel shackle, and then people started commenting on it. It hit me that it was a neat application, and I had actually read an article about how Navy Seals used to stow paracord on themselves during battles in Vietnam, so that’s how we started marketing it as survival gear.

You order stuff, and they never ship you the product. I am still waiting for the crossbow that I ordered 6 months ago. Also, their customer service is useless and unhelpful. After 3 months of waiting for my first order, they decided to cancel my order without my permission. Then the company sent me an email to order the same crossbow on November 21st, and now again I still do not have my order, and they can’t tell me when I will receive it.

I think survival means different things to different people. Sure, there is basic survival – will you live or die – but once those basic needs are met, survival can become something entirely different. The survival of your mental wellbeing and happiness can mean the difference between “merely surviving” and LIVING. I think we all have our unique and individual purpose in life, which is the element that makes life worth surviving. Once you can pinpoint exactly what the purpose is for you, you’ll know how each and every element of your life (your house, your family, your romantic relationships, your career) honor your highest purpose. I like to call this our “over-arching goal” and it’s our main focus when we design our lives. For example, mine is Happiness Creation. Everything I do in my life supports this goal, and if it doesn’t – I know it’s time for a change. If you need help figuring out what your over-arching goal might be, I’ve about it more in-depth here: The Science to Designing a Supported & Purposeful Life.

In an area of canyons and cliffs, if there are hostile forces or dangerous wildlife on the ground (bears, wolves, mountain lions, etc.), you may find that setting up shelter on a cliff 50 – 100 feet off the ground is a great way to survive and sleep safely at night and out of danger.
For the amount this costs, it’s almost a crime to go up the hills without one. The thing lasts for 12,000 strikes, is approved by the International Survival Instructors Association, and let’s face it, is just pure genius. A must-have for any adventurer.

As mentioned before, you can technically build your own shelter if you have the proper survival gear tools at hand. That being said, it’s always nice to get an upper hand on shelter, as it will also help you stay warm and dry in case of an emergency or survival situation.
Very simple to use. You just remove the ranger band/heavy duty rubber covering the line on the tube, tie on your favorite lure or baited hook and bobber. Put your hand into the lanyard – so the kit do…
Those who get offended by you promoting something even though you’re giving them a ton of value upfront and for ‘free’ (it’s not really ‘free’ to create content, takes up a lot of time, effort and sometimes money) are probably not the sort of people you want as your audience anyway.

For outdoorsman Greg Ticknor, 22, of Helena, Mont., the bracelets provide a convenience. Ticknor used to carry a wad of parachute cord in his pocket “just to have in case I needed it” while hunting or fishing. He saw the bracelets and learned how to make them. Now, Ticknor and his brother, Eli, can carry 12 feet of paracord around their wrists.
In survival, shelter is a must-have. A tent or a tarp is a sure way to keep you and your supplies dry—but only if you can successfully rig it so that you don’t have to wear the tarp like a poncho. A paracord will function as a brilliant tarp-rigger at a moment’s notice.
Wilderness survival sometimes calls for being found — that includes in a time of collapse as well. Perhaps you’ve put together a camp in a remote location. Whatever circumstances take place where you’re now cooperating with other people for survival, tasks related to hunting, scouting, and scavenging can mean you have to split off from the group at times.
Personal Locator Beacons: These are smaller, affordable, reliable, and offer many new features. Companies like SPOT and DeLorme now offer products that post almost real-time tracks of adventurers far off the grid. The SPOT Gen3, for example, sells for as low as $150 and enables users to send simple, pre-programmed messages (all ok, send help, etc.) to friends and family or initiate rescue through a first-responder network.

A signal mirror can serve two vital survival purposes. First, a mirror can signal help to a rescue plan or helicopter. Using the power of the sun to shine a glare towards a rescue team is an excellent way to gain attention.

Avoid eating mushrooms or berries you can’t recognise, no matter how hungry you are. It’s better to be hungry than to eat something poisonous. Many berries in the forest, especially white berries, are poisonous – and a great deal of even edible mushrooms need to be cooked first.

My personal EDC habits, especially in terms of how often I swap in and out the things I carry, have changed considerably over the years. I know there are many who like to change what they take out with them daily, but I’ve never been the type…

Moving my home to the “country” was less about lower property taxes, empty nest syndrome, and proximity to wineries than about avoiding more populated areas and enabling greater security in the event of a major event. Adding a fence and planting lots of blackberry, raspberry, and rose bushes around the perimeter of my property was less about “curb appeal” than about slowing down potential intruders.

Anyone new to precious metals must learn the differences between numismatic and bullion coins. Both have their purposes, for investors and for preppers. The values of bullion coins are based almost entirely on their precious metals content. Their melt value is tracked in real time in the global markets, all in terms of troy ounces. In contrast, numismatic coins have both melt value and collector’s value. Judging the market value of bullion coins is simple arithmetic. But the prices numismatics are far more difficult to gauge. This takes study of rarity and relative values, study of the science of coin grading, study of standard annual references, and consultation of current rare coin market prices in detailed publications such as the Grey Sheet and Blue Sheet. There are many complexities that I won’t delve into here in this brief essay. Just suffice it to say, the word complex is an understatement. My general advice is that unless you are willing to do considerable study, then skip rare coins altogether, and only buy bullion coins or pre-1965 non-numismatic “junk” U.S. circulated silver coins.

Caves can be great, but be sure the cave is not already occupied by bears, large cats, snakes or other unfriendly animals; they know caves are good too, and they’ve been looking for good shelter for longer than you have.

• Snow: The energy it requires for your body to absorb the water from snow is high. Instead of eating the snow, melt it first. This can easily be done over a fire or with a camp stove. If those aren’t options, use the sun. Accelerate the process by chopping up ice and hanging it in a water bag in direct sunlight. If there’s no sun, use your body’s heat.

Great sites indeed. I must have been on all of them in the past year. I’m more interested in the alternative energy area…rather than prepping. But you are right…I found a lot of great articles. Mac Slavo is my all time favorite though.
