Interesting list, but I don’t see a knife sharpener. Lansky and Smith both make pocket size models for short term field use by those who can’t free hand a whet stone. Spyderco and Lansky also make systems more suitable for long term use. There are others as well, some quite pricy. Might be a good review topic.
It does what it’s supposed to…no more and no less. It’s an emergency knife that can be carried discreetly in your wallet until you need it. It seems sharp enough and once the handle is folded stays in place so you don’t have to worry about cutting yourself. It’s not heavy-duty and not as easy as a regular pocket knife, but it’ll do well enough in a pinch.
Of course, there are hundreds or thousands of survival gadgets kicking around on the camping market, so on the back of bringing you our essential outdoor survival guide, we thought we’d bring you a list of some of the best survival gadgets to help you get by in the wilderness.
Why do I rate binoculars in the “Top 10 Survival Gear”? Not only do binoculars help hunters spot game animals — they help people lost in the wilderness identify distant features in the terrain, sometimes saving several miles of needless travel. Misreading the terrain can bring a person to the edge of a cliff or canyon or to a river that is simply to dangerous to cross. Now you have to turn back.
A lot of gear you would need for a home emergency kit can come from your own camping supplies. You want a stove to cook on, sleeping bags to sleep in, etc. Yet, another name for one of these is a bug out bag. If you had to pick up and leave immediately, your home pack should have everything you need, ready to go out the door.

Here at The Bug Out Bag Guide we strive to build the best survival kit using a philosophy of practicality and efficiency. An excellent way of practicing this mindset is to utilize multi purpose survival gear to meet the needs of our Bug Out Plan. Multi purpose survival gear items improve our survival kit in multiple ways:
However, this often overlooked piece of gear has many survival uses. There’s no good excuse not to include a survival bandana in your survival gear. Survival bananas are a high utility and little weight survival tool. Get one.
In addition, the kits may contain typical individual “survival kit” items, such as nylon tarps, extra clothes and coats, blankets, sleeping bags, matches or other fire starting equipment, a compass and maps, flashlights, toilet paper, soap, a pocket knife and bowie knife, a fishing kit, a portable camping stove, a power inverter, backpack, paper and pencil, a signaling mirror, whistle, cable saw, bleach, insect repellent, magnifying glass, rope and nylon cord, pulleys, and a pistol and ammunition.
That’s basically the claim I heard from Survivalstraps.com. They sell bracelets braided out of 24 feet of parachute cord and held together with a stainless steel clasp (they call it a shackle). The TSA is not going to allow you through its metal detectors because of this stainless steel clasp. That’s a minor inconvenience for a product that claims its “Active Edge technology” will stimulate your sympathetic nervous system, improve the oxygen intake in your blood stream and help your body to perform “at more optimal level.”

Hellava list, Elise! Way too much for my brain to handle. 🙂 The Mora Companion goes with me in the woods as a neck knife and for finer bushcraft tasks. Though it’s not full tang, mine has taken a lot of abuse and keeps performing admirably. I plan on shaving with it in the bush one day.

Anything with both the words “multi” and “tool” in it is worth having a look at. There are a great many options for multitools – focus on weight and practicality when looking. Are you to really NEED the one with the allen key and corkscrew? Stick to the basics of a straight blade, saw, and can opener (like this one here) and add what few other options you see fit. Some bonus items that are rarely thought about are a magnifying glass and USB stick. These come on some multitools and can be used to start fires and store important family records, respectively. If you want to learn more about choosing the right multitool for survival, you can check out our article here.
