Wild edible plants is a huge area of study unto itself. So much so that it goes beyond the scope of this page of our wilderness survival guide. We have devoted an entire section of our website to this study. Take a look here:

Most preppers dream about going off-grid…but it’s not as easy as just buying a homestead and moving in. Many would-be homesteaders jump in but fail because they didn’t think about the situation well enough. I want to help make your off-grid transition a success, and that’s why I’m showing you the top 5 mistakes people… Read More

No problem. In my case the teacher (Math & English, including grammar) was my grandfather. In my household was a four letter word, and improper verb tense was a minor crime. I have most of it ready to go except for some paragraph cleanup. Cut & paste from the original pdf, a little editing, a little Perl script for the tables, & viola. When complete I plan to send it to MD to do with what he wants. Perhaps a few of us can help turn it into a new improved & expanded edition.

Venous bleeding will be dark red, and treatment mimicking that of arterial bleeding is called for. Capillary bleeding, such as a small scrape, is minor. So slap a Band-Aid (or handkerchief) on it and stop your whining.

Being stranded in your car is one of the most likely survival scenarios you’ll face. Despite the technological advances in new cars, breakdowns are actually becoming more common. Today’s cars have a lot more features than older cars, so more things can go wrong with them. As a prepper, you need to realize that being… Read More

I discovered Mr. Rawles’ site a couple years ago, and you are correct! It is fantastic, but I am glad to learn about more sites, though I do visit SHTF often. Not strictly survival sites, but fantastic for financial/economic information, I highly recommend http://www.zerohedge.com and http://www.dollarcollapse.com and also for all the news that is fit (or not) to print, http://www.rense.com. There are not enough hours in the day for me to read all the wonderful information on the internet.

Want to get a fire started fast after falling in a river? An Orion hand held flare will burn for approximately 30 minutes, even in the wind and rain. Pop the flare and arrange sticks, bark, and branches (even if they’re damp) over the top. At 30 minutes of burn time, that is plenty of time to ignite a pile of damp tinder and kindling.

In a situation where there is a moderate to severe societal collapse, such as extensive civil unrest or major natural disaster (Katrina situation maybe?), and you have to scavenge for supplies, possibly with lesser regard to law; look at the billboards! Many of them are topped with solar panels about 3’X3′. And you’ll KNOW they also have the wiring and battery packs on board.

The day I quit I went through the company shaking hands and saying good-bye to all 30 of my colleagues letting them know why I resigned. Then I walked four blocks up Fifth Avenue and started my new, even more inspiring job.

Although there is no way to precisely judge things like how long can you go without water or how long can you survive cold, there are some good estimates. One of my personal favorites is the rule of the threes. It gives you a very broad idea of some calculations that can help you in a survival situation. The rule goes as follows.

M.D. Creekmore’s TheSurvivalistBlog has an interesting backstory that makes it unique in the blogosphere. M.D. left the rat-race, bought two acres of land off grid for $2,000 and parked a 26 foot travel trailer on it where he lives full-time. Since M.D. lives what he writes, his articles provide many insights and advice that are rarely found in other survival blogs.

A man calling himself a time traveler claims to have been born in 2043 and has come back in time to let us know that nuclear war is imminent. Saying his name is Michael Phillips, the YouTube channel APEX TV uploaded a video of the man also claiming the “Big One” will hit California soon too.

Ensure that your survival kit is up-to-date. Many items of your survival kits have an expiration date. Glow sticks and water purifying tablets go bad after a few years. Check the expiration dates of these items before you head out for your big expedition.

In case you don’t have a car or vehicle, or don’t plan on using one in a survival or emergency situation, you can completely ignore this section of the list. If a vehicle is in your emergency preparedness plan, however, you’ll want to make sure you’ll have these items at the very least.

• Digging for water: Certain plants indicate water sources are nearby. Identify plants, such as cattails, cottonwood or willows, and dig a seep hole until you reach moisture. Wait for water to collect in the hole.

I just want the items I ordered before I die. If you can have something here within 2 weeks on other orders it shouldn’t ever be a month on any others. If something is on backorder then don’t sell it, or at least tell the customer it’s on backorder and it might be a while before you get it before the customer spends their hard earned money on something they could get somewhere else within days. That’s how you earn respect and trust, that’s how you build a business; on the trust and respect of your customers. Make sure you save and keep up with your emailed receipts and order numbers; if you don’t get one then email them ASAP and ask for it.

Acorns and oak bark have excellent medicinal properties to heal gastrointestinal problems. If you can find some acorns and oak bark, just boil it in water for 5 minutes and drink the concoction. It will help you fight diarrhea and other gastro-intestinal issues.

In addition, the kits may contain typical individual survival kit items, such as nylon tarps, extra clothes and coats, blankets, sleeping bags, matches or other fire starting equipment, a compass and maps, flashlights, toilet paper, soap, a pocket knife and bowie knife, a fishing kit, a portable camping stove, a power inverter, backpack, paper and pencil, a signaling mirror, whistle, cable saw, bleach, insect repellent, magnifying glass, rope and nylon cord, pulleys, and a pistol and ammunition.

I love these things. This WetFire product is very lightweight, easy to ignite, and it has a long burn time. Each cube weighs just .16 ounces and is capable of burning up to 10 minutes at temperatures around 1,300°F. They work in wet and windy conditions with ease. They even float and keep burning, even while floating in water. I’ve been bringing these little waxy cubes out for show-and-tell during survival classes for several years, and I’ve always observed impressive results in the field, regardless of the weather. In my most recent tests, a cube burned for 9.5 minutes on a very damp day—twice the burn time of the homemade alternative (Vaseline-soaked cotton balls). The flame was also much taller than the petroleum jelly on a cotton ball. Several spikes from the WetFire cube were 9 or 10 inches tall, which is twice the height of the flame from a greasy cotton ball.

Starting out the list we have The Survival Mom. Although she caters to the matriarch of the family, Lisa Bedford (aka “The Survival Mom”) has plenty of tips and advice that are great for women and men alike.

That website also talks about how Ryan is NOT a prepper. He isn’t. He openly talks about how he created SurvivalLife as he recognised it as a fanatical niche where there was lots of money to be made not because he was interested in the niche.

The specifics of wilderness survival change a lot depending on what part of the world you’re trapped in. Knowing how to treat hypothermia is about as useful as a bag of malaria for a castaway in the tropics, but it’s the difference between life and death when you get locked in the meat cooler at work again. But one constant in nature is that you can almost always find a body of water—and if you have the know-how, this water means food.

In the real world, economic collapse won’t necessarily present itself overnight, and for those who don’t want to live in the woods, being able to transfer large sums of wealth from one country to another is a perfectly viable option. Obviously, for bartering, silver, alcohol, cigarettes, toilet paper, etc. are better options. Gold should just be viewed as a sort of insurance policy for monetary collapse, not for teotwawki.

At the grocery store: Favor stores that use a “serpentine line”—that is, a single long line that flows into multiple cash registers (e.g., the line at your local bank). Many Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods stores use this system, and they have proved to be at least three times faster.

It never fails that when you need a knife or cutting instrument the most there’s never a pocket knife around to help you out. That’s why we created the highly-effective, razor sharp, multipurpose credit card knife. At about the thickness of 2 credit cards, it is the ultimate portable knife.

Although there is no way to precisely judge things like how long can you go without water or how long can you survive cold, there are some good estimates. One of my personal favorites is the rule of the threes. It gives you a very broad idea of some calculations that can help you in a survival situation. The rule goes as follows.

This is honestly something you should never attempt, and hopefully you’re never in a situation that would call for you to perform first aid on a lung puncture—but hey, knowledge is power. A sucking chest wound is a type of wound that penetrates through the chest wall and into the lung. Because of the extra lung hole, air can escape through the chest with a distinctive “sucking” sound (hence the name).

A man calling himself a time traveler claims to have been born in 2043 and has come back in time to let us know that nuclear war is imminent. Saying his name is Michael Phillips, the YouTube channel APEX TV uploaded a video of the man also claiming the “Big One” will hit California soon too.

NATO Emergency War Surgery – I hope non of us ever have to attempt any of the techniques detailed in this book – don’t get me wrong it is a good book, but performing many of the medical procedures presented without proper training would likely have disasters consequences, but so could doing nothing.

Carbon steel is a lightweight alloy that is bulletproof. You can easily procure this material as most saws are made from it. The pieces of carbon steel may require a high ‘exoskeleton’ for your jackets, clothes, and backpack.

Sometimes we forget how easy we have it. Amid our crazy life schedules we tend to take for granted that purified bottle of water when thirsty, or the push of a button to light a fire. But it’s important to remember that in the blink of an eye, it can all be gone. The unexpected happens, you get in an accident or lose your way; now, it’s just you and the wilderness with no ties to civilization. Here are ten basic survival tips to get you prepared- just in case.

Never make the mistake of trying to outrun a flash flood. You will be caught and swept away before you realize. If you see a flash flood coming, immediately go to high ground and stay the heck away from it.

You can find a lot of animal products in the wilderness. Animal bones and feces are scattered all over the jungle floor. You can use some of these items to your advantage. Here are some tips on how to utilize these.

Emergency Radio with Multiple Ways to Keep it Powered — This Kaito emergency radio has 5 power sources including AA battery, internal battery (which you can charge with an AC adaptor), hand crank, solar, and even USB/Dynamo. The Zombie Survival Guide, written by American author Max Brooks and published in 2003, is a survival manual dealing with the fictional potentiality of a zombie attack. It contains detailed plans for the average citizen to survive zombie uprisings of varying intensity and reach, and describes cases of zombie outbreaks in history, including an interpretation of Roanoke Colony. The Zombie Survival Guide was also featured on The New York Times Best Seller’s list.[2] Brooks’ inspiration for The Zombie Survival Guide was his childhood interest in zombies, sparked by the first zombie movie he ever saw, circa age 10: Revenge of the Zombies (1943).[3]

Now is the time to be calm and think positive. It doesn’t sound like much, but optimism goes a long way, and in a survival situation, it starts with you, your attitude and your will no matter how scared and alone you may feel. First, keep a realistic outlook and diligently plan to keep yourself in the best possible physical and mental state. If something isn’t working out, like building a fire or shelter, don’t rush, because that can lead to panic. Stop, breathe and think about what you need, observe your surroundings and organize a new plan.

I’m always on a tight budget, so yes, much of my kit is recycled or repurposed. Always remember, you don’t have to go out and buy everything. Adapt, improvise, and overcome. The most beautiful trout I ever caught was caught on a fresh cut bit of bamboo about 4 feet long, dental floss, and improvised wooden fish hook with a beetle tied to it as bait. That beetle put up one hell of a fight. Dental floss is an excellent investment for bugging in or out. Besides the obvious use of dental hygeine, it’s very tough, cheap, compact and lightweight in it’s own little super convenient package, and can be used in any application where a bit of string would serve better than 550 cord/paracord. Can even be used to close wounds in a pinch, multiple strands can be braided together for applications requiring more tensile strength when 550 cord is unavailable, and can be woven into a net. I used some braided strands in Afghanistan as an improvised bootlace to serve my needs until I got back to my patrol base where my spare laces were stowed.

Plastic/rubber tubing is good for slingshots, tourniquets, can be used as a straw to draw water from holes in the ground, etc. Wire saws are good, too. Though of course they can’t do everything a regular saw can, their portability, your right, makes them a huge asset.

What creates the thick smoke?  – Dry grass, leaves, pine needles, paper, wood shaving, small sticks are great for starting fires. To sustain the fire, you will need to find dry wood , full branches and anything similar that will provide a slow but long lasting fuel. To create more smoke; simply add living branches, wet leaves and even rubber materials.

At the far right end of the KM plot there is a tick mark at 161 weeks. The vertical tick mark indicates that a patient was censored at this time. In the aml data table five subjects were censored, at 13, 16, 28, 45 and 161 weeks. There are five tick marks in the KM plot, corresponding to these censored observations.

Now, love is something that makes every one happy. Everyone likes to be loved. Yeah… so being loved can be the purpose of our life.. But, why would people love us if we don’t love others? If we don’t care about others? If we harm or hurt or kill others? There comes the concept of loving others…. Ahh… Fair enough! I thought….

It sounds but many people can’t understand directions when lost. It is important for any survivalist to be able to tell directions even when the sun is not available for reference. There are many little clues in nature that can help you find the North. Here are some great examples.

When it comes to Survival Life, it may be the case that “no news is good news,” but we can’t be sure. While we weren’t able to locate many online customer reviews during our research, here are some of the positives we encountered:

Too much of either one can be harmful, if not fatal to your body. If you’re dehydrated, do not eat anything until you’ve had water because the food will only absorb the remaining water in body and cause you to be dehydrated even more. Drinking too much water can also mess up your metabolism and cause lots of complications long term. Always make sure you have enough of both food and water.

Do your research first. Don’t just trek off into the wilderness; get a solid understanding of your surroundings first. Studying a map of the area where you’re going — and making sure to bring it with you — will increase your chances of not getting lost tremendously. Educate yourself about the flora and fauna of the area you are exploring. Knowledge of the local plants and animals can save your life (for example knowing which plants are edible or knowing where the local colony of rattlesnakes make haven).

Having a well-stocked emergency kit in your car is a good place to start if you’re taking a road trip. If you’re camping or hiking, you’ll want some survival supplies in your pack. The old saying holds true — it’s better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it. On the following pages, we’ll walk you through the 10 items that should go in every survival kit.

This innovative mind blowing device has changed the way we manage our water needs once far away from that pesky thing called civilization. Sick of carrying gallons of water strapped to your back on a long hike through nature? Well, bust that spine no more with the Lifestraw! The tube is around 9 inches in length with a diameter of about an inch. The durable plastic exterior even comes with a little string attachment making it even easier to carry and keep on your belt. Through this straw’s mechanical dual filtration system, all you have to do is place the one end directly into nature’s water hole and start sucking. The hollow fibres inside promise to dispel bacteria, dirt and parasites so that only the cleanest of recycled water reaches your thirsty lips. This product promises you can enjoy an entire quart of water in just 8 short minutes and one single unit has the capacity to purify 1,000 liters of water before needing replacement. Time Magazine once named this device as the invention of the year. Find them for only 20 bucks!

Astronauts are provided with survival kits due to the difficulty of predicting where a spacecraft will land on its return to earth, especially in the case of an equipment failure. In early US space flights, the kit was optimised for survival at sea; the one provided for John Glenn on the first American space flight in Friendship 7 contained a life raft, pocket knife, signaling mirror, shark repellent, seawater desalting tablets, sunscreen, soap, first aid kit, and other items.[5] A survival kit was provided for the Apollo program which was …designed to provide a 48-hour postlanding (water or land) survival capability for three crewmen between 40 degrees North and South latitudes.[6] It contained a survival radio, a survival light assembly, desalter kits, a machete, sunglasses, water cans, sun lotion, a blanket, a pocket knife, netting and foam pads.[7]

– You mention a lighter, some sort of wind proof thing. They are cool, but they also take a special fluid to use, so you would have to carry that along on a forced hike, where as a standard old Bic will be good enough AND if the fluid does run out, you still have a bunch of sparks left from the flint in it. A smoke signal was one of the oldest ways to communicate long before the age of cell phones. You can use this method to attract attention to yourself. Creating a smoke signal is easy. All you need to do is burn something that will create a thick smoke, and the smoke will do the rest for you.

Snaring can be an excellent way to trap small animals while you are away building your shelter. However, it is important to know where to set up the traps. You can set the traps in places where you can see the animals running around. You can also hear small rodents and squirrels. It is even better if you are near a water body.

Glow sticks can be life savers in survival situations. These are small sticks that are filled with a chemical substance that emits light when mechanical shock triggers a chemical reaction. I am sure you must have seen them at parties and such, but they are of great value to a survivalist.

This lovely tale comes from our very own island of Britain. Bear needed to swim to the mainland after finding himself stranded on an island. He had to swim, but in those freezing waters, quite possibly wouldn’t have made it the short distance.

Sling-Shot-Bow: Oh boy, are some of you guys & gals gonna love this survival weapon. All you need is two (2) 1/2 inch long screw eyelets, some thick rubberbands, a piece of duct tape and a knife. And believe it or not, this sling-shot-bow is hellova lot easier to make, aim, shoot and hit your target than a damn slingshot or bow & arrow. Take a look below and you should be able to figure out how to make this survival weapon. Note: This weapon can be made out of any type of wood, not just bamboo.

There are people in this world, such as monks and missionaries, who may not appear greedy and lack the desire to control other people or things. It is only because these people believe in an afterlife. They sacrifice the present life for the sake of the future life in heaven. What is heaven? In my view, it is the place with indefinite control. Therefore, these people still want control in the end. They want to control their life to come because they believe in it. People that have more control over other people are called politicians. People that have more control over things are called capitalists and people that have more control over knowledge are called scientists. All these people are the forerunners at the intellectual marathon race.

Take any small piece of cloth and place it inside a metal container. Make sure that the container has a cover. Burn the container (with the cloth inside it) for a couple of minutes. You know you’re doing it right if the cloth remains intact but is dark from all the burning. Char cloth is really great for starting fires because it catches fire with just a small spark. Tip: Try cutting or ripping a large cloth into really small pieces and neatly roll them inside a tuna can. You’ll have yourself an entire pack of char cloth!

Most of us have heard of vital signs or checking vitals at one point or another, and these are the go-to indicators that are used to assess basic functions of the body that are essential for our survival.  They cover heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and temperature, and they normally fall within a specific range …

Indeed, if you’re lost or injured, the right gear can mean the difference between a comfortable night spent outdoors and a cold one. Items like a whistle or a signal mirror can alter fate to issue rescue instead of abandonment.

The US Army uses several basic survival kits, mainly for aviators, some of which are stored in carrying bags. Aviators in planes with ejection seats have survival kits in a vest and the seat pan, the survival vest worn by US helicopter crews also contains some basic survival items.

It’s time to get creative. Familiarize yourself with how to build a lean-to; there are various types of shelters you can build and each has different pros and cons. Obviously you want overhead covering for warmth at night and protection from the elements. If you are in rocky, mountainous terrain, look for overhangs. Otherwise, use limbs and leaves or anything that can provide insulation. Pine needles usually blanket the ground in thick batches, excellent for bedding.

One of the best sites out there related to wilderness survival skills, and number 7 in our list, is Ron Fontaine’s Survival Topics. Instead of just regurgitating things found in survival books, Ron follows a very similar approach that I do in that he practices and talks about things that he tries/uses/experiments with personally.

Wilderness Survival Food List An essential element of wilderness survival is knowing what to eat so you can keep yourself alive. We’ve got the top 133 wild foods for your survival food list right here.

In an area of canyons and cliffs, if there are hostile forces or dangerous wildlife on the ground (bears, wolves, mountain lions, etc.), you may find that setting up shelter on a cliff 50 – 100 feet off the ground is a great way to survive and sleep safely at night and out of danger.

The first thing that you must tell yourself is to take a deep breath and try to control your anxiety and panic. In all likelihood, you are in a much less dangerous situation that you may believe at the moment. If you keep a cool head, you will soon start seeing ways to get out of the bind.

Coffee and camping go together like pot and planetarium laser shows. Tie some grounds up in a filter, secure it with dental floss (or string), and throw it in a mug full of piping hot water you just boiled in that empty beer can.

“The Existentialist’s Survival Guide is a remarkable book. We can’t think of another writer who so thoroughly understands Kierkegaard and his followers, presents their thought more accessibly than they themselves did, and—crucially— relates them concretely to the dark places in his own life, and ours.” Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein, authors of Plato and a Platypus Walk Into A Bar, and Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates

The rest of your ideas are awesome! The olive oil in a jar though. Some of your suggestions seem to be more relevant to a bug out situation, whereas the jar of oil is not. Very useful tip for a bug in situation though! Personally, I have lamps and lamp oil in stock for home use, plus emergency candles in my BOB.

Okay, we know, this is getting a bit ridiculous now. Bear Grylls is a pretty odd guy sometimes. You have to admit though, using a dead seal as a wetsuit isn’t quite as ridiculous as dying because you refused to use a dead seal as a wetsuit.

When choosing what rifle to recommend as one of the choices for Top 10 Survival Gear, I went to the experts at Outdoor Life. They know the hunting industry. They know guns. I have to say that the Marlin 336XLR comes in as a great choice for a hunting rifle specifically due to it’s accuracy. New hunters need as much help as they can get right? This 30-30 gets top billing for deer but in all actuality a 30.30. can take down just about any game animal in North America, including grizzly bears. Carry the right ammunition for the game you plan to hunt; don’t use the same ammo you would use to take down a deer (150 grain) as you would for a turkey or small game (100-125 grain).

As a wilderness survival guide, I often am called upon to differentiate wilderness survival from primitive living. Often times these two are lumped together as one, but in fact they are distinct. Wilderness survival refers to the actual experience of survival in the wilderness, which may or may not be a primitive experience depending on the gear you have access to. Wilderness survival is usually a short term experience. Primitive Living is usually a long term experience, and refers to the experience of living in a primitive setting, practicing primitive skills for an extended period of time.

Okay all you homemade bread lovers out there… Let’s see your favorite bread recipes! I’m sure that most everyone will agree that there’s nothing quite like the smell of breadmaking, from the rise, to the baking, to the table! And there’s nothing like the taste of fresh, warm, homemade bread. …

A good flashlight is a survival basic. But this isn’t just a flashlight. It’s actually a tool designed for your car, with an attached window breaker and seat-belt cutter in case things get out of hand. Accidents happen, and it’s the dude who’s prepared for it that doesn’t have to sit in an upside-down car for 14 hours, slowly bleeding to death, before someone finds him.

A food dehydrator is essentially an oven. However unlike a conventional oven it’s a low temperature oven. Why do they call it a food dehydrator? Because it’s designed to draw out the moisture from food. To dry it out. Why would you want to dry out your food? Because certain …

With a good set of binoculars you’re going to be able to see greater detail at further distances and with less eye strain than a cheap pair. Cheap binoculars are for your kids in the backyard looking at birds — not hunting game at far distances or traveling through the wilderness.

The water was the energy source. Again, just because something has one USE doesn’t mean you can’t use it for both or for whatever you want. Here, a solar powered pump, pumps water up into a storage tank up above its intended use. When needed a simple hand valve is then turned the water drains out of the tank, turning a generator and you have electricity…. (If you capture the draining water, you could use it repeatedly or to drink or shower etc)… I noted I’d come back to fuel (storage) tanks. A small gasoline powered generator is useless without gas. But, a Diesel one-if you could make bio-diesel, or with a flex fuel generator, using diesel or propane, could have a way to add a smaller portable tank… by installing one of those large propane tanks common on farms or in the Mid west even more options.

I wrote Gardening in a Failed Economy after spending three summers working on gardens that can be made just about any were, using junk that you can scrounge by the side of the road, or at the local recycling place. the idea is that as the long term economy gets worse people, especially old people are going to have a hard time affording food (or any thing else for that matter). The book isn’t some cut and paste Internet BS, it is 3 years of my life, I proud of it, and I’m willing to put my money were my mouth is.

Six years later, Walchle and his growing group of craftsmen have built a reputation among adventurers and soldiers alike, with their product starring in some pretty incredible survival stories, including drowning rescues and saving soldiers on the battlefield. Now overseeing nearly 70 employees, Walchle and his wife, Melissa can’t believe what their “small, home-based business” has turned into.
Like any emergency kit, the Pocket Survival Pak — which was developed by Doug Ritter, founder of the survivalist website Equipped To Survive — can help lost or injured explorers signal helicopters and planes, start fires, boil water, melt snow for water, catch fish, navigate through the woods, trap small animals, perform rudimentary first aid, and repair damaged gear.
One tool I keep in all my survival bags is a small folding brush saw. I originally bought one at my local hardware store for de-limbing some small trees on my property line. I found that for cutting brush, limbs, even small trees it’s quicker requires less effort and is much quieter than any bladed tool I have. It’s also inexpensive, lightweight and fits easily in the side pocket of any backpack I own.
Armed with logo licenses for the military, collegiate sports and organizations like the Wounded Warrior Fund and breast cancer awareness, Survival Straps are being used to not only save a life, but to remember one, too. “Our customers use our straps as a symbol of strength, and it means so much to us to hear their stories.”

Maybe you are starting to see paracord bracelets as often as I see them. This creative cordage storage option has been around for a while, but it really seems to be catching on recently. And with good reason. These bracelets are a handsome looking excuse to carry a piece of Military Spec 550 cord everywhere we go, making it a great every day carry item.
The kits provided for Soviet and Russian Cosmonauts are optimised for survival in the temperate and sub-arctic mountains, forests and grasslands in the east of the country. Soyuz spacecraft kits include “food rations, water bottles, warm clothing, rope for making a shelter using the capsule’s parachute, fish hooks and miscellaneous other survival gear”. A specially designed pistol, the TP-82, was provided to defend against predators such as wolves or bears. It was able to fire conventional bullets, shotgun cartridges and flares; the folding stock could be used as a shovel and it also had a fold-out machete.[8]

The first line item. More than one source. Energy is energy. It does not go away. Gas in your car is burned making you go. Solar rays, can be used to generator electricity and/or to generate heat. So, a system that captures heat. Can turn the heat into steam, the steam into a motor- which spins a generator. Vice a solar panel into electricity. Sources can be the City generator electrical power (or steam etc). Diesel motors can be modified or purchased to run on more than one type of fuel. If you can spot bees, it is always a great sign. It means that not only there is a hive full of honey nearby, but also a water source. Bees are usually found within about 4-5-mile radius of a water body.

But in addition to a cell phone, Smith recommends personal locator beacons (PLBs), which are essentially emergency radio signal devices that communicate with satellites (and thus rescue personnel) from anywhere on the globe.

The constant fear mongering after every shooting has people pushed to two extremes.  The first group cowers in manufactured fear at the feet of the government demanding more ink on paper to protect them. The second group gear up to protect themselves.

This gift is one that my husband has purchased for co-workers or others on several occasions, and it is always appreciated. The knife really is sharp.. It is super convenient to be able to pull out a knife from your wallet whenever you need. We’ve used it while hiking, organizing the garage, opening packages, and a variety of other activities. The knife fits in your wallet as is the size of a credit card. It isn’t bulky. My husband has owned his for two years and still finds it sharp and useful. I am sure we will give this gift again in the future.

The workshop met my expectations because I needed help with every step that we covered. John explained everything in depth and took time to answer our questions. I loved all the personal assignments as well as the group assignment, where we had to put in a bid and explain our numbers. The workbook and handouts are awesome! I have confidence that when I am presented with a potential job, I won’t be undercutting the market, or myself, and I won’t look like an amateur. I already know that I will be referencing these materials for years to come.

In case you don’t have a car or vehicle, or don’t plan on using one in a survival or emergency situation, you can completely ignore this section of the list. If a vehicle is in your emergency preparedness plan, however, you’ll want to make sure you’ll have these items at the very least.

Water purifying tablets are a must in your survival kit. These small tablets can help you clean water in the absence of any heat of other means of purification. Although tablets may not last forever and it is not good to survive entirely on them, they can be a good emergency backup.

They obviously sell things they don’t even have in stock, or maybe that how they buy their stock; you buy from them and then they order from someone else? That would explain a lot of this crap, but someone needs to be held accountable for this. It shouldn’t be a hit or miss on getting an item you have already paid for in a reasonable amount of time. Three weeks should be the latest you get anything through the mail, and that’s if it is shipped from China, not states over. It’s a 12-hour drive from my home in Alabama to Austin, Texas. I know for a fact because I used to make that drive when I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and had to drive through Austin, which was about 45 minutes away to get there.

This lovely tale comes from our very own island of Britain. Bear needed to swim to the mainland after finding himself stranded on an island. He had to swim, but in those freezing waters, quite possibly wouldn’t have made it the short distance.

It’s the same with quite a bit of the gear on this list as well. Sure it’s helpful to have a firesteel, but if you don’t know how to make sparks from it, it’ll be rendered practically useless. You’ll want to at least test out a lot of the gear you have to make sure you’ll know how to use it when you need to, and you’ll also want to use the gear enough so you’re sure it won’t break on you when you need it the most.

If you rub an ice cube on the spot between your thumb and index finger, it sends cold signals to your brain, which in turn can tamp down the pain signals coming from your tooth. In one study, people who did this reduced their pain levels by 50 percent compared to people who rubbed the spot with no ice. You can also try one of these toothache remedies.

In addition, Stein has written for the television industry, including outlines for the TV movie Murder in Mississippi and for the lengthy ABC miniseries Amerika. He has also contributed to the creation of the well-liked TV comedy Fernwood 2 Night.

From August 5, 2002 until June 21, 2005, he was a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, proposed the Bernanke Doctrine, and first discussed “the Great Moderation” — the theory that traditional business cycles have declined in volatility in recent decades through structural changes that have occurred in the international economy, particularly increases in the economic stability of developing nations, diminishing the influence of macroeconomic (monetary and fiscal) policy.
When Bernanke left Stanford to accept a position at Princeton, he and his family moved to Montgomery Township, New Jersey in 1985, where Bernanke’s children attended the local public schools. I didn’t see this invaluable item item on the list or in any comments thereafter so I’ll request a good ol’ 5ft x 7ft wool blanket. I’ve used mine to sit on around the camp fire and keep myself off the warmth sapping ground. Also great for keeping warm by the fire just wrapped up in. It won’t burn from sparks either which makes it invaluable for wrapping around your (probably lite weight and highly combustable) sleeping bag. Sheds moisture alright to keep any goose down bags from losing insulation. This is under the assumption that you are sleeping outdoors under nothing more than a tarp shelter until a proper basecamp and shelter can be established. Once a shelter is established (if you dont have / bring / or burned down your tent) the wool blanket also makes for a kickass door.
It’s a massive list for those who’d like to check their own self-made kits off in comparison to something comprehensive – to see if there’s anything they’ve missed that they may have wanted to take if only they’d remembered it.

A synthetic bag can keep a person warm in cold temperatures as well, but there’s a drawback — they weigh more, sometimes a few pounds more. If you don’t mind a couple extra pounds, then go with a synthetic bag like this Goretex modular system.

Tips: Climbing and descending cliffs and slopes can be a very effective way to get yourself out of a dangerous area fast, get yourself passed otherwise impassible obstacles, or even get yourself to prime hunting grounds.
And if you can breathe but the air is deadly, then you may become a member of the walking dead. Not the zombie variety but the sort where your death is coming soon, you just don’t realize it yet. Think nuclear fallout.

Hey Abdul, thanks for that. That’s a good read but I don’t think that business they talk about was SurvivalLife. I think it was simply a product they bought which then they integrated with SurvivalLife or it gave them the inspiration for SurvivalLife. I could be wrong I don’t know the ins and outs of it.
Those who get offended by you promoting something even though you’re giving them a ton of value upfront and for ‘free’ (it’s not really ‘free’ to create content, takes up a lot of time, effort and sometimes money) are probably not the sort of people you want as your audience anyway.

Reaching for a multi-tool is as easy as simply finding one with pliers, and a Phillips screw driver, right? Actually that’s wrong. A Phillips screw driver might come in handy on several occasions but there are a lot more screw head types that call for special fittings. These special fittings can quickly take parts off vehicles, remove hardware around locking mechanisms, and remove ventilation coverings. A good multi-tool is essential to urban survival, is made of stainless steel, and can withstand years’ of use. If you’re going to be anywhere near an urban environment, look, at the Swiss Tool Spirit Plus. Here’s a multi-tool with 38 functions, including a bit wrench with 6 bits (important for screw heads that a Phillips or standard screwdriver will not fit).
I read once where a water tower was used to store water. Alas, this homeowner was thinking out of the box. The location was very remote. And being frail he dreaded trying to carry heavy deep cycle batteries.
Same as EVERYONE else (except the 1 tool that posted a 5 star & probably works there!). I ordered the everstryke match. $ gone, no product. Emailed & called. Empty promises & bullsh!t. This company is a HUGE SCAM. BEWARE!!! BBB gave them an “F” rating.

The study of how people control one another in order to gain indirect control over things is called politics. The study of how people make use of the control over things to indirectly control other people is called economics. American psychologist Abraham Maslow says that there are seven levels of human need, namely, (1) food, water, (2) safety, (3) belongingness, love, (4) esteem, (5) curiosity, (6) beauty, symmetry, and (7) self-actualization. Only after man’s lower level of needs have been satisfied, will he recognize the need at the next higher level. Maslow believes that the highest desire of man is to “self-actualize”. In my opinion, though, the meaning of self-actualization is not clear enough. Instead, I believe that  the ultimate goal for human existence is to control everything that exists, meaning the entire universe. Things will become “beautiful” after they are controlled. For example, people think that today’s life is more beautiful than yesterday’s because they have greater control over life today than they had yesterday. Otherwise, they would not say so. Curiosity is only a means to achieve the end, that is, control. One has to understand a thing before controlling it. Only when the structure of atom is understood can atomic power be controlled. As a result of the natural course of evolution, human beings have only two eyes and ten fingers. By the same token, the human desire to control and be curious is the result of evolution that has been going on for millions of years. Those ape-men that lacked the desire to know and control had died out long time ago. The so-called esteem in real terms is the desire to do well in everything and outperform others. People compete and compare with one another to see who can control more. This is the primary motivation force behind human social development. Social animals are “social” and live together because they are linked by a common force. The force that links the Earth and the Moon is called gravity, and the force that links social animals together is belongingness and love, an inherited instinct of social animals. Adults do not have to teach kids to make friends with other kids because it is in their instinct. Without friends, people will feel lonely. Among social animals, there is mutual attraction (belongingness and love) as well as repelling force (hatred) in competition for control. In other words, people co-operate and compete with one another. Co-operation increases the chance of survival for people as a group while competition and selfishness increase the chance of survival for individuals. Both forces are necessary and are results of the natural course of evolution over the years. Sometimes, though, competition can also increase the chance of survival for a group. A typical example would be two male deer competing for a herd of female deer. In the end, only the stronger male deer has the chance of mating therefore their offspring will have a better chance of survival.

An important application where interval-censored data arises is current status data, where an event T i {\displaystyle T_{i}} is known not to have occurred before an observation time and to have occurred before the next observation time.

I agree with you. 90% of the people who think they will survive from any list will be sorely mistaken. They will die. This list or any other list is a reference for people to think about. Without a doubt there are other items people will regret not having. Duplication of item is not wasteful, but resourceful. If something breaks or is lost then you have a backup. A list is just a list. Using the items on a list, repeatedly, will give ‘brain’ muscle memory. You can not go out and buy a gun, and expect to know how to use it if you have never practiced. I have been an avid backpacker for decades; often traveling alone in the back country. I know how to use my equipment very well. I don’t have to ‘think’ about how to use my equipment.

The age at which a specified proportion of survivors remain can be found by solving the equation S(t) = q for t, where q is the quantile in question. Typically one is interested in the median lifetime, for which q = 1/2, or other quantiles such as q = 0.90 or q = 0.99.

Once you’ve begun to stockpile survival gear, it can be hard to determine what you’re missing from your list. As a result, we’ve taken the time to create as much of a comprehensive list of all the different types of survival gear as possible.

Rather than MRE’s, check out your local LDS/Mormon “Bishop’s Warehouse” for cans & Mylar bags of bulk and dehydrated foods. The cans are designed for 30+ year storage and the Mylar bags are perfect for hiking, camping, and survival. They are a lot cheaper than MRE’s. You can even buy some Mylar bags and make your own “meals in a bag” for even less money.

The work I loved so much became a 24 hour living hell and when I couldn’t stand it anymore I decided to find another job. As soon as I made that choice I was free and exhilarated! It was time to get out and move on.

Always aim to memorize the map of the area. You should always aim to have a laminated or waterproof case of a map to ensure security of map. We highly recommend that you try to memorize major landmarks, rivers, roads, and other areas that stand out on the map

Previously here on NicheHacks.com I had a much nicer looking layout on the home page but bounce rate was high so I added double column posts and bounce rate dropped significantly. It doesn’t look as nice but that’s not what is important.

I thought the same thing, at first. The thirty pages is the table of contents. Look on the left side of your screen. You click on each chapter, and only those pages are shown. I hope this makes sense.

We are starting this weekend off with a private catered dinner and time to mingle. Though the media often attempts to twist the gun rights debate into a web of complexity, gun rights is in fact a rather simple issue — either you believe that people have an inherent right to self defense, or you don’t.

Syndicated radio talk show host G. Gordon Liddy interviewed Rawles and said that his book posits a collapse of civilization.[47] When Rawles was interviewed by radio host Laura Ingraham, she described the book as going through point-by-point the basics of being prepared and heightening your chances of surviving some type of major crisis. Ingraham said that there is a thin line between order and total anarchy in time of a crisis, when peoples’ lives are on the line—and all the niceties and the rules go out the door.[48]

A truly unique travel knife, this is one piece of survival gear you can’t live without. About the size of your standard credit card, it unfolds to reveal a sharp blade and comfortable, non-slip gripping handle that lets you slice, cut or chop your way through even the toughest materials.

It is always good to keep a hand sanitizer in your survival kit, or better, in your pocket. However, make sure that a sanitizer that is alcohol-free or the one that is foam based won’t work for this purpose.

I’ve been waiting almost 30 days now on 4 different orders, about 10 on another order, and have only recieved 2 orders out of the orders I have placed. They say the items are on back order, but they still send emails every day trying to sell the same items they say are on backorder. I’m completely disappointed in Survival Life; their shipping is downright awful and just a slap to the face. Do they not want your repeated business?

If you need to cross a powerful river, Bear recommends anticipating where you think you’ll be spat out on the other side then giving yourself an extra 25% for safe measure. You can then use a backpack liner, an excellent flotation device, to help you on your way to the other side.

Good point! I definitely need to add the pool shock to the list, and entertainment in general needs a separate category methinks! There are lots of little things you can have at home that would help with that (Bananagrams comes to mind too, for instance, especially for just at home and not taking it in a pack or anything).

Or do you save yourself several hours and just rappel down the cliff with a rope, harness and belay device? The Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device is priced at $99. It takes climbing and descending with a rope to a new level — it’s billed as making climbing easier and safer. If you can see how useful climbing and descending with a rope can be in a survival situation, get yourself one of these belay devices as well as some instruction in climbing and rope setting.

Just wanted to pass along a really good handbook for people who basically know nothing about survival and are in the burbs or cities. (actually it’s good for everyone!) Stefan Verstappen is the author of “The Art of Urban Survival” and the book is really packed full of information. Take a look for yourself on his website or at Amazon.
