HOME OR OUTDOOR VERSATILITY – It’s not always easy or convenient to carry a pocket knife in your pocket, which is why our multipurpose knife is great for the kitchen, garage, backyard, barn, or even while traveling by car.
That’s where the BioLite Camp Stove comes in. Not only is it a camping stove, it is also a charger, generating power from burning biomass. You would have to burn hours of fuel to get the stove to fully charge your phone, but in times of need it could provide that extra spark needed to let you make that pivotal call. A genius survival gadget indeed!
The chomebook? I wrote in one comment that I think an iPod or even an unused touchscreen smartphone of any sort loaded with maps and info would be better. High storage capacity, small and portable, easily recharged with a solar charger. However, the NSA is likely the least of my worries in a survival situation. In a bug out survival situation, I may WANT someone to find me!

On Sept. 8th, I placed an order and only had to the shipping which was minimal. However, I was charged twice for shipping that day. I called, no answer of course, called and called. I finally sent an email, they replied several days later, but never credited my account. Oh, I also NEVER received the item. Today I checked my account as I do everyday thankfully. I had an unauthorized charge for $19.95. I called on hold forever and ever, nobody ever picked up. Now I’m in the process of canceling my credit card! Not a happy lady today.
Tips: You can increase the likely hood of a trap catching an animal by arranging logs, brush and large rocks to narrow a path that leads straight into each trap you set — from both directions in fact. Squirrels and rabbits and other small mammals can be “funneled” into any trap that’s been set.
What about using the cord? Of course I had to tear one apart. I was hoping for a knife free teardown, but I did have to bring out the blade at the end of the 93 second unraveling process. The melted end of the cord wouldn’t fit through the hole in the shackle, so I had to clip off the swollen end of the cord. Upon cutting the end of the cord, the seven inner strands were plain to see. The most surprising part of the operation was the length of cord. I was expecting about five feet of paracord, but instead, I received just over 9 feet of cord. It’s amazing to think that so much cord was woven into such a little item. No wonder the Strap was initially stiff — it was stuffed to the gills.
To survive a natural or man made event either at home or away. This could be a hurricane, earthquake, tornado damage, a vehicle break down, even just a snowstorm that makes the roads unpassable. In many places, if there’s some bad weather on the way, the grocery stores get cleaned out.

I think I saw a line item for a Generator. I would like to add a few tid-bits if you are leaning that way. Don’t rush out after a large emergency and trying to get one (the unit or it and it installed). I would suggest a package that incorporates the off-the-grid craze ie solar and/or wind with the typical back-up power system. (Mainly for the Batteries)… IMO A proper system. First, it should be large enough to supply all of your electrical needs. (NOT WANTS). Second, it would be a multi-fuel; and multi-source system. If you just purchased an Electrical generator off the shelf. It has a really small fuel reservoir, and most runs on only one type of fuel. Gasoline.
This sounded vaguely like what a TENS unit does. I had one prescribed for back pain by a physical therapist several years ago. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator and is an electrotherapy device that emits tiny doses of electric current to promote pain relief. It never did much for me but it’s not quite the same as using radio waves.
Survival Straps® gear can help you survive whatever life throws at you. Our paracord gear is worn around the world as a fashion statement, but also as a symbol of strength, honor, and the greatness of American production. They are made in America from super strong military spec paracord which gives them a secondary purpose. In an emergency situation, unravel the bracelet to deploy the paracord to help get you out of a jam. If you do use it in an emergency situation, send us your story, and we will send you a new one, free of charge.
The bracelets are easy enough to make, according to Melissa Duke of Pleasant View, Tenn., who has gone into the paracord jewelry-making business full-time. Duke, 38, made her first bracelet at her son’s request last August, then another for her husband. One year and nearly 1,000 bracelets later, she has quit her medical office job and sells bracelets and key chains online at her Etsy shop, Knot Creations, and elsewhere.
Prepper gear should also include at least basic first aid supplies and medicine. Though the medicine you can stockpile could never be enough to remedy each and every situation, having a basic first aid kit and some standard medicine will typically get you through a great deal of difficult situations.

Didn’t know of Sawyer’s million-gallon filter! It looks awesome for home + camp use, but if I’m on the move I’d prefer a straw rather than fiddling with bags. So I can hydrate on the move in creeks and brooks. Definitely a plus to have one of each, though! I’ll see if I can get one to review.
Following a collapse, expect a lot of people in outlying towns to significantly increase the “hunting pressure” in adjacent wilderness areas within the first few days. That means much of the local wildlife is likely to flee for more remote areas due to this sudden increase in hunting pressure. Study your maps and consider starting your wilderness journey in a remote area less likely to have any human activity — which means you may have to go several more miles than you may have initially considered. But the payoff for traveling a few extra miles to start your push into the wilderness will likely be worth it — hunting is likely to be best in remote areas with little or no human activity.
– Mora knives are spectacular – look at them, in the event that you can’t find one, check out a local bait/tackle shop, chances are there is a knife just like it there – same sheath and all (I just found this out after owning a tom of Moras, and the steel is just as good, with a slightly thicker blade..)
The thought of something “disastrous” happening scares us all. However, the reality is, there is a chance that each of us could be involved in some kind of disaster or emergency. Services such as water, electric, gas, and telephones may be cut off. In the event of a large disaster, emergency personnel will be too busy helping those in need of immediate medical and rescue attention, and unable to assist you.
They need to figure out a better plan to get things out and to their customers. This is going to cost them their business if they don’t do something different than their current shipping. Or maybe it’s in their warehouse and the workers just don’t work but are packaging one shipment a day. Goodluck if you make a purchase from them, I hope you get your item in a reasonable amount of time.
Admonition – from a guy who represented a major water company. Two liter pop bottles are cheap because they are not designed to be on the shelf or stored for a long period of time. Buy the correct container although it costs more money. Do not use 5 gallon plastic recycled water containers. Chemicals that have migrated into the plastic can not be removed by washing. Use paint buckets with a “2” rating on the bottom that are new. They are rated as food grade. Not as good as the more expensive specific blue water containers, but they will be ok on a budget.
The leanest survival kits are stored in Altoids tins and the like, and they include just the bare backwoods essentials: matches, fire-starters, fishing line, a tiny compass, water purification tablets, a whistle, a small rescue mirror, and so on.

The good news is you have a lot of choices in survival lighters. You can go cheap with a standard BIC lighter, or you can go high-tech with a Tesla lighter. Or go with anything in-between like a zippo.

Survival Power: Binoculars are never truly appreciated until a situation that calls for binoculars presents itself. Good binoculars can both aid in hunting and also be essential for long distance navigation by land or by boat (if you’re in a canoe or kayak for example and paddling along a coastline).
I’m always very cautious about heavy duty survival necklaces and bracelets, which could hang up on something if you were falling, or get snagged underwater and hold you there. Imagine the headlines in the local paper, “Survival gear kills owner”. Dreadful irony. But the Survival Strap makers have thought that problem through, and come up with a smart solution. Each of their Straps includes a plastic, break-away pin which can replace the stainless steel pin holding the bracelet together. Screwing in the plastic pin will allow you to break free if you ever get hung up.

Hello! I would just like to add that I think that radiation pills, or Potassium Iodide pills, should be included on the list for prepping, and planning, just in case we go into a nuclear war. It may not help in the denser areas of radiation, but as its spreading throughout the country, it will prevent the heaviest symptoms.
So for families of Marine recruits who want to remind themselves of what their son or daughters are enduring on all our behalves, consider designing for yourselves a Survival Strap and wear it for each hour of The Crucible as a way of helping your loved one transition from recruit to Marine.

I don’t know if this has been shared or not, but Penicillin and Amoxicillin should be included in the list of medicines, along with cephalosporin (Keflex). All of these I believe can still be found over the counter as farming supplies. Be careful, however, as the dosage for humans will be majorly different than that on the label. I would suggest getting a dosage chart for each antibiotic.
With a bit of ingenuity you’ve built yourself a shelter that costs much less than a popular brand name tent and should be able to withstand more wear and tear and protect from rain and wind, even snow. In a time of collapse and evacuation, it also catches less attention than something bright blue or orange or yellow like a popular brand name tent.
Whether you want to get ready for a week in the woods, an overnight boat trip, or the zombie apocalypse, a survival kit is an essential tool. Filled with items to help you stay alive in dangerous and unexpected situations, they can make the difference between life and death. Wilderness survival kits include rope, bandages, flint to start fires, a compass, a survival knife, and more. Even the most well-planned hiking trips can go awry when the weather does not cooperate or someone gets hurt. Pack a survival kit in your backpack and be prepared for emergencies. When leaving for a fishing trip, include a survival kit with basic first-aid supplies, emergency blankets, and flares. Customize a kit for your car or home, or purchase emergency survival kits complete with emergency food supplies. Filled with glow sticks, waterproof matches, a whistle, and emergency food rations, it puts a fun twist on survival gear. Search the vast inventory of survival kits on eBay to find the one that is right for you.
Wilderness survival sometimes calls for being found — that includes in a time of collapse as well. Perhaps you’ve put together a camp in a remote location. There are couple of other sorts of people too, like one who spent their life searching for a sole purpose of their life (why do they exist here and bearing sort of such questions in their head), then there are others who sacrifice their life for others.
We use an outside shipping company to ship orders, and a credit card processing company to bill users for goods and services. These companies do not retain, share, store or use personally identifiable information for any secondary purposes beyond filling your order.
Medical emergencies are an even bigger deal than being lost. Your kit should contain items to deal with serious injuries — not just cuts and scrapes. Pack some Quick Clot or Celox to deal with serious bleeding, tweezers, a needle and thread, antibiotic cream, a bit of sunblock, and any special medications that you may need.
Besides the wind, water is the next major vulnerability of stick matches. But neither wind nor water are a match (pun intended) for these amazing matches. I routinely display UCO Stormproof matches to my survival students, striking the large matches and then dunking the burning match in a bowl of water. To the surprise of my onlookers, the match bursts into flame again after being lifted from the water. These matches come in a bomb-proof watertight container with replacement striker strips and even a bit of cotton to keep the matches from rattling around, and to serve as emergency tinder.
Forti continued, “In reality, a backpack full of camping gear is simply a large ‘survival kit’ designed for a comfortable and extended stay in the wilderness. A much smaller version of this might consist of a tobacco tin with relatively few items tightly packed in.”
FireLaces are one of those pieces of gear you can wear every day. These are shoelaces with mini Ferro rods at the ends. Just loop the striker into the laces, and you’re shoes become a survival tool in their own right.
For personnel who are flying over large bodies of water, in additional to wearing a survival suit over cold water, a survival kit may have additional items such as flotation vests, sea anchor, fishing nets, fishing equipment, fluorescent sea marking dye, pyrotechnical signals, a survival radio and/or radio-beacon, formerly a distress marker light replaced by a flashing strobe, formerly a seawater still[4] or chemical desalinator kit now replaced by a hand pumped reverse osmosis desalinator (MROD) for desalinating seawater, a raft repair kit, a paddle, a bailer and sponge, sunscreen, medical equipment, a whistle, a compass, and a sun shade hat.
Of course, every survivalist is different and has different needs. Thus, no two survival gear stockpiles or survival kits will look the same. Some will undoubtedly want to stay away from purchasing battery or electricity dependent gear, for instance, while others will want to go the hyper-minimalist route, only buying what they think they will really need (and perhaps be able to carry in a single backpack). Don’t feel pressured into extending your list of survival gear by buying something you don’t really think you’ll use. Instead, scan this list for items that you might have forgotten or think would really compliment your needs as a survivalist.
I agree with Mike in his statement that United Cutlery is a very substandard company. Also, the ONLY decent quality hollow handle survival knife that I’ve seen is made by Randall and costs several hundred dollars. I would never choose a hollow, storage handle knife for main line survival purposes. You are definitely best off purchasing a quality carbon steel blade by Ontario, Camillus, Becker, Cold Steel, Also, while some stainless steel alloys are excellent for knife blades, generally speaking they are subpar when compared to carbon steel. Rust is not an issue to those who know how to maintain a blade and good carbon steel has far superior edge holding ability.
These come in many flavors but most of them will do the jobs of a hatchet (obviously), pry tool, shovel, and wrench. We should look for any opportunity to remove high weight to volume ratio items such as steel tools to build the best survival kit, so being able to leave behind any of these is a good step. For more info check out our in depth reviews of the BEST survival tomahawks here.
A lot of people expect me carry a huge, Rambo-reminiscent survival knife, but in all truth, I’d rather be carrying a wood carving knife. Mora knives are my favorite wood carvers, since their laminated steel blades are strong, long wearing and razor sharp right out of the package. If you take the legendary Mora blade and add a quality spark rod handle insert from Light My Fire, you have the Swedish FireKnife.
Hellava list, Elise! Way too much for my brain to handle. 🙂 The Mora Companion goes with me in the woods as a neck knife and for finer bushcraft tasks. Though it’s not full tang, mine has taken a lot of abuse and keeps performing admirably. I plan on shaving with it in the bush one day.
A lot of gear you would need for a home emergency kit can come from your own camping supplies. You want a stove to cook on, sleeping bags to sleep in, etc. Yet, another name for one of these is a bug out bag. If you had to pick up and leave immediately, your home pack should have everything you need, ready to go out the door.

There are two or three things I can tell you about the Survival Strap bracelets that are absolutely true from my perspective. First, they look good. They’re available in 50,000 customizable color combinations. Second, the stainless steel shackle is difficult to close. And third, I’ve been wearing it for almost a week and I’m sleeping a little longer every night. Well, I slept a little better for a few nights but now I’m back to my normal pattern of a few hours here or there.

n Duke relies on knot-tying author J.D. Lenzen’s online tutorials, “Tying It All Together,” on YouTube. Duke suggests starting with the “cobra knot,” called the Solomon Bar at Lenzen’s website, Fusion Knots. It’s the easiest and most popular knot, or weave, for these bracelets. Walchle, the Ticknor brothers and Duke use it, often in multiple colors, which make the weave “pop.”
After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other to last for at least 72 hours. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.
I ordered that item on Dec. 6/16 and have order # 5FR74DEN from Survivallife.com and sent them multiple e-mails which they have answered a few but the 2 they have not bothered. So here they are listed below.
I agree with you. 90% of the people who think they will survive from any list will be sorely mistaken. They will die. This list or any other list is a reference for people to think about. Without a doubt there are other items people will regret not having. Duplication of item is not wasteful, but resourceful. If something breaks or is lost then you have a backup. A list is just a list. Using the items on a list, repeatedly, will give ‘brain’ muscle memory. You can not go out and buy a gun, and expect to know how to use it if you have never practiced. I have been an avid backpacker for decades; often traveling alone in the back country. I know how to use my equipment very well. I don’t have to ‘think’ about how to use my equipment.
A miniature flashlight can be carried on you for use in any emergency or other required need. This Streamlight 73001 can be carried on a keychain, backpack or even a belt loop on your pants or a zipper on your jacket and there when you need it. It’s an extremely small flashlight with an LED light — meaning lots of run time — using small button cell batteries (and during a long term emergency, carrying an excess of these tiny batteries will not take up much space and only weigh a few ounces, if that.)
Of course, there are hundreds or thousands of survival gadgets kicking around on the camping market, so on the back of bringing you our essential outdoor survival guide, we thought we’d bring you a list of some of the best survival gadgets to help you get by in the wilderness.

I am a member of the emergency services. Although I haven’t had a need yet to use all of the items in the kit, I have found all of the items very well made, practical and durable. The kit takes up very little space in my kit bag, which is very important as there is limited space in it. I use the pen on a daily basis and have found it to be well balanced and well made. I carry it in my breast pocket at all times when on duty and it is comforting to know that if I have a need to break a car window in an emergency, I have the tool to do it instantaneously within reach. The torch is a good backup to the main torch that I carry on duty. It’s small size makes it easy to carry in my map pocket, so in the event that my primary torch fails, I have a reliable backup without taking up space on my duty belt. The card multitool is good quality and I actually carry it in my wallet. Again, it takes up very little space and is close at hand when I need it. The key ring torch is great for finding the keyhole in the door when I’m trying not to wake my wife by fumbling around looking for it when I come home from night shift. I have tested the striker and steel fire lighter and it works very well once the black paint coating has been scraped off. Although I haven’t needed to use the whistle, it certainly is loud and I’m sure could be heard from some distance. I’m somewhat old school, so I don’t have to rely on gps to find my way around. The compass is well made and the entire cost of the kit is less than what you’d pay for a similar ‘Silva’ or other brand compass. Overall I have found the kit to carry almost all of the items that you would need in a survival/emergency situation. The price of the kit pleased me the most. As I previously stated, many of the items in the kit, when bought singularly, cost more than the entire kit and as far as I can tell, there is no compromise or difference in the quality of the items. Overall I am very happy with the quality, practicality, size and most importantly the cost of the kit. I would recommend everyone to purchase one as you never know when the unexpected is going to happen.
This is the scenario most people should be preparing for and is the thought process behind our products. While it can be entertaining to envision zombies or a giant asteroid ending our world, our packs are made for real world basic human needs and much more likely scenarios.

Re: Tradeable Goods. I noticed Phil made the comment about gold being high priced. It seems to me that a significantly large number of people are not aware that gold coins come in sizes as small as 1/10th of an ounce (for about the cost of six silver dollars or so) or maybe they don’t consider a gold chain, the links of which can be taken off one at a time and traded with the right person.

For the last few weeks I’ve been testing out the Apple Watch Strap by Survival Straps which is made with a mix of paracord and high quality stainless steel. While there are lots of cheap Apple Watch band options on the market, Survival Straps’ deliberate approach with custom craftsmanship and quality materials makes this product worth looking at.
A multi-tool shouldn’t be viewed as a knife with a bunch of other stuff attached. In fact, if you’re really after a survival knife, you should get one separate to a multi-tool, a straight-edged, fixed knife which is far more reliable in crucial situations than one designed to fold away.

Survival Power: Portable water filters do not remove chemicals and so none are a complete solution to water. Outside of a city following a collapse local water sources may be contaminated with any number of chemicals as industrial run-off leeches into ground water, making this water unsafe to drink, even with a water filter. In a wilderness setting though, a Lifestraw should do just fine for you, and be a real life saver.

I received my H.R. Richter multi tool today and was pretty disappointed with the size of the tool, it was no bigger than my index finger. Yhe saw on the end of one of the blades looked as if it was only good for cutting tooth picks, and the blade was only big enough to gut a chipmunk. Sorry but for twenty dollars and five dollars for shipping and handling, I’m pretty disappointed.
If you’re planning on getting rescued, or if you’re at all interested in navigation, communication, or really any way of knowing what’s happening in the outside world after the shit hits the fan, you might be interested in adding a few of the survival gear items below to your stockpile. Though not every survivalist/prepper will be interested in staying connected if the SHTF, if this is important to you, make sure you have a way to do it!
Looking for a “no-cook,” “no-fuss” survival food with a long life and reasonable taste? The UST 5-Year Emergency Food Ration Bar may be just the thing. I love shortbread cookies, and these remind me of apple cinnamon oatmeal and shortbread combined. Each pack has 2,400 calories in total, which can be broken into six 400-calorie cubes for rationing purposes. These are perfect for a survival kit stashed in your car or at work, and a good fit for the outdoors, too. If you’re not a shortbread fan, these crumbly cakes might not be your favorite, but they are packed with vitamins and minerals. Bon appétit!

On October 12th, Brandon worked a 12 hour dispatcher shift on a busy home college football game and was waiting for me to also get off work.  He went to spend some time with the guys at the firehouse. Shortly after arriving they were dispatched to a house fire along with another company. Brandon and his partner, Joey, were upstairs of the two story house when they lost all radio transmission and water to their hoses. For 15 minutes they were trapped upstairs with the house engulfed in flames,  as the fire got hotter and was making its way up the stairs. They tried several alternate escapes without any success. As the fire got warmer Brando, said he thought to himself, “Erik, is going to kill me if something happens.” That’s when he felt his wrist getting warmer and remembered he had his survival bracelet on. He unraveled it and attached it to a bar and jammed it into the window jam and prayed that it held and jumped out the two story window with it, as did his partner. Brandon and Joey both made it, with minor bumps and bruises and aches and pains, but that’s far less than what could have happened if he hadn’t had that survival strap. Brandon is forever grateful that he had his bracelet and says that I saved two people’s lives that day just with that one gift that I came across online while shopping. I may have bought the bracelet, but if it wasn’t for the survival strap and its durability and great product I wouldn’t be on here telling you this Survival  Story. We are forever grateful for your product, and I plan on buying more of these and giving them to the other firefighters at the Citizens as Christmas gifts. It’s a small gesture but comes with a big reward, because someday it could save one of them as well when equipment fails. In the world of firefighting they say, “Let no man’s ghost return to say his training let him down.”
I was out on a dive trip, and my watchband was about to break. I dug out some paracord out of my dive box and tied the watch to my wrist. I made the first watch band and fastened it with a marine-grade stainless steel shackle, and then people started commenting on it. It hit me that it was a neat application, and I had actually read an article about how Navy Seals used to stow paracord on themselves during battles in Vietnam, so that’s how we started marketing it as survival gear.
One of the top survival priorities in an emergency is to find and disinfect enough drinking water. Two of my favorite water disinfection tablets are Katadyn’s Micropur tablets, and Potable Aqua’s Iodine tablets. While these two products use different chemicals, they are both more than 99 percent effective against waterborne pathogens. So while they both are highly effective, you should still weigh the pros and cons of each.
The only drawback is the multi charges for the enrollment fees. Each one you buy in automatically opts you in for more. so having a program that checks on the multi enrollment fees would be nice. Thank you again and keep up the great offers!
A signal mirror can serve two vital survival purposes. First, a mirror can signal help to a rescue plan or helicopter. Using the power of the sun to shine a glare towards a rescue team is an excellent way to gain attention.
Survival Power: Snare placement can be a key factor to whether or not you catch anything; your ability to know where to set snares relies on you learning and practicing basic trapping skills for capturing small game. Baiting traps with common game foods like nuts, seeds, and berries (and artificial baits) can help boost your snaring success.
People use our straps for all different kinds of things. We’re about helping people, and we especially like to support our armed forces. So far, we’ve donated about $445,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project, and our goal is to get to $1 million by Christmas time. Our customers buy our care packages and send them overseas, and we usually match their donation so that all the guys in the unit can be outfitted with a Survival Strap. Overall, about 10 percent of our net is donated. We started the replacement program, because we would get letters from customers telling us that they were in a situation where they could have used their strap, but they loved it too much to destroy it, so we started the initiative that if you send us your story, we’ll send a new Survival Strap for free.

It could be a good idea if you have an interest in starting a preppers website but do you have any interest in this niche as you’ll probably struggle otherwise. I agree with Mike in his statement that United Cutlery is a very substandard company. Also, the ONLY decent quality hollow handle survival knife that I’ve seen is made by Randall and costs hundred dollars. I would never choose a hollow, storage handle knife for main line survival purposes. You are definitely best off purchasing a quality carbon steel blade by Ontario, Camillus, Becker, Cold Steel, etc. Also, while some stainless steel alloys are excellent for knife blades, generally speaking they are subpar when compared to carbon steel. Rust is not an issue to those who know how to maintain a blade and good carbon steel has far superior edge holding ability.
The Survival Straps website is excellent, and there is far more information on the site than I can convey in this short column. The wrist straps are just the tip of the Survival Straps product line, which includes lanyards, key chains, watch straps, belts, and even dog collars. Wrist strap prices start at $24.95, and go up based upon the options selected.
Not only could this prove key for your cooking and drinking needs, it could also prove an essential part of any first aid kit, heating water to sterilise for use in treating injuries. Unless you’re on the open prairie, if you’re crossing through the wilderness there’s a great chance you’re going to come to a cliff or ridge or canyon at some point. The drop before you may be only 20 yards at it’s shallowest point — but that’s a 60 foot drop. You can’t climb down that. Now you’re stuck.

Yet the stories that customers post to the Survival Straps website provide testimony to their utility. Walchle’s favorite story is that of a U.S. soldier in Iraq named “James” who says he staunched a bleeding leg wound with his bracelet.
A lot has been said on the web by hunters, hikers, and wilderness officers on the effectiveness air horns have had to scare off bears, specifically grizzly bears. The “official data” is that an air horn may or may not work. After hearing what multiple people have had to say with varying credentials, my conclusion is that an air horn might be effective to scare off a grizzly bear 80-90% of the time. People who have used it caution others to hold the horn down so that it makes a long, continued noise. Bear hearing is more sensitive than a human’s and that could be one reason why grizzlies have run at the sound of an air horn. Sometimes it may not work for you though — equipment failure may occur unexpectedly (we don’t live in a perfect world) or maybe a bear is simply too hungry or too angry. For these scenarios, have a back up plan.

A Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device is only an effective tool for someone experienced in the basics of climbing. Climbing and descending by rope is not that difficult to learn and many cities have recreation centers and outfitters with indoor walls where you can be taught how to climb by an instructor. (To be more prepared for the wilderness, follow up with instruction on an actual rock face or cliff.)
NOTE — A micro torch relies on fuel; when your fuel runs out, you have no more flame. You need back-up fuel (butane in this case) if you want several month’s use in an extended survival situation. One thing to note: A canister of butane is cheap and just one can go a long ways and is also easy to use). Consider both back-up butane and even a back up torch in case of rare equipment failure (or to even use as a bartering item; there’s a good chance someone else is going to want one after they see how easy it is to start a fire).

I purchased this kit because I wanted a different color other than black. I purchased from Overstock because it was cheaper than other stores. I am pleased with the purchase and would recommend. It comes in handy for my husband and mother.
In arctic or alpine areas, survival kits may have additional cold weather clothing (winter hats and gloves), sleeping bags, chemical “hand warmer” packets, sun glasses/snow goggles, snowshoes, a collapsible shovel, a snare wire for small animals, a frying pan, a camp stove, camp stove fuel, a space blanket, matches, a whistle, a compass, tinder, medical equipment, a flint strike, a wire saw, extra socks and a tent designed for arctic use.
CR123 batteries pack a lot of power in a small package, and the lithium ones have a shelf life of 10 years, which is why they’re up on the list. You can also purchase rechargeable ones (here, for example) that you can charge with your solar panel array. At the end of the day, 3.7 V will always be a lot more versatile than 1.2 V batteries because you can always lower current (make it dimmer), you can’t increase it (make it brighter). 900 lumens to the face is an extreme force multiplier.

I ordered the free knife knowing going in that is was just a lure to get you to buy something else. When I saw the offer for a second free knife, I knew that is was a catch. If you bother to read anything else, it tells you that you are also going to be in their club and there was a monthly fee. I clicked on “no thanks” and got my free knife with no problems, and it is good for what it is.
Or do you save yourself several hours and just rappel down the cliff with a rope, harness and belay device? The “Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device” is priced at $99. It takes climbing and descending with a rope to a new level — it’s billed as making climbing easier and safer. If you can see how useful climbing and descending with a rope can be in a survival situation, get yourself one of these belay devices as well as some instruction in climbing and rope setting.
One tool I keep in all my survival bags is a small folding brush saw. I originally bought one at my local hardware store for de-limbing some small trees on my property line. I found that for cutting brush, limbs, even small trees it’s quicker requires less effort and is much quieter than any bladed tool I have. It’s also inexpensive, lightweight and fits easily in the side pocket of any backpack I own.

If you go with tarp, buy yourself three or four measuring 10×12 or a bit larger. With a few tarps you can build yourself a small shelter that is sealed and insect proof, nearly as well as a tent. With some duct tape (to tape tarp edges) or a heavy duty sewing needle and thread you can stitch together a shelter made of tarp in no time.
Instead, Forti’s gear stresses rescue and from the elements. His No. 1 piece of survival gear is a knife, specifically something large like a machete. “A good knife can be a survival kit unto itself,” he said.
Advertising – companies paying money to advertise. A sign of a healthy market if people are willing to spend to gain customers. Influential People & Big Names – well known people in the niche, big brands, niche stores with lots of followers, big name bloggers, people with huge social media followers and so on.
Tip: An air horn can also be used as a signaling system, alerting people who may be hunting or fishing to return to camp. Be sure to have a few re-fill cans, if you want long term use — air horns have a limited life span.
I understand it’s not the same business model as TIWIB, but the numbers just don’t add up in my head. Even with 270k email subscriptions, you’d have to blasting out promotions every single day, and have incredibly high conversion rates to make 1 million a month. The fact that this website is being used as a proof of concept to their marketing skills just adds to my suspicions.
Hey, Todd! Yeah it’s a crazy list for sure. Took forever to compile! Definitely don’t expect anyone to look up every single item recommendation, I’d expect people to just check the items they have off the list and then maybe look at some recommendations for items they don’t have or don’t have much experience with.

Six years later, Walchle and his growing group of craftsmen have built a reputation among adventurers and soldiers alike, with their product starring in some pretty incredible survival stories, including drowning rescues and saving soldiers on the battlefield. Now overseeing nearly 70 employees, Walchle and his wife, Melissa can’t believe what their “small, home-based business” has turned into.
Nobody knows when a disaster might strike, but being prepared beforehand can help your survive. Whether it is a natural disaster in your local area, such as a earthquake or hurricane, or a man-made disaster, such as a terrorist attack or fire, you need to have survival kits with the proper emergency supplies. Disasters can force you to evacuate your neighborhood, workplace or school or can confine you to your home. Having the right survival kits, first-aid kits and emergency supplies on hand ahead of time is like having a spare tire in the trunk of your car: You hope not to have a flat tire, but it’s nice to know that a spare tire is there, ready for use, and to keep you going. Emergency preparedness is essential in this day and age.
I also contacted the Navy Seal Foundation to verify whether they had hooked up Walchle with the “scientist guy,” but the woman who responded seemed to have difficulty understanding what I was talking about. She knew nothing. That was understandable. I’d been on the phone all morning and knew about as much as she did.
Given that our Survival Straps are made from several feet of super-strong military spec paracord, there’s a lot of survival power that you can pack into one paracord bracelet. But it does take a bit of know-how to suddenly become the McGyver of Survival Straps. The good news? Once you acquire the know-how provided in this article, you’ll be ready to shelter yourself, feed yourself, and keep your most valuable items out of harm’s way. And when it comes to Survival Straps, that’s just the tip of the survival iceburg.

We are so glad that our gear played a part in saving these heroic firefighters while they were out protecting our country and citizens. We are so grateful for all that they have done and continue to do for our safety!
The good news is you have a lot of choices in survival lighters. You can go cheap with a standard BIC lighter, or you can go high-tech with a Tesla lighter. Or go with anything in-between like a zippo.
A bit of a luxury item in a survival scenario but drinking water out of your hands is not convenient. Plus, if you happen to have coffee, soup, or freeze-dried meals you’ll need a bowl or cup to eat these meals.
Good article but it’s missing survival hygiene products on the list. I can recommend shower-in-a-bag kits, soap bars, shampoo bars (yes they exist) and dental floss (useful for many things). I would not recommend deodorant with fragrance since it can scare away animals, and make it difficult for you to hide from attackers. Also another good trick I have is to carry handkerchief sized towels instead of bigger towels for purposes of drying yourself, because it saves space and if the towel gets too wet, just squeeze out the water and continue 🙂 hope this helps
With periodic malfunctions in several store-bought compasses, including polarity issues, you want a compass you can count on. Learn proper care for a compass and how to protect polarity, as well as how it’s actually used in the field. Navigation is an essential survival skill; along with fire and water procurement and shelter building, navigating with a compass is a skill taught in Special Forces survival training as well as local survival schools in most areas.
Most ultralight emergency shelters allow condensation to build up inside as you get warm, leaving your clothes soaking wet. With the Escape Bivvy, condensation is no longer an issue. The proprietary fabric lets moisture escape as it keeps rain, snow and wind out, while reflecting your body heat back to you. Imported. Opened dimensions: 84″L x 36″W.
Weight: 8.5 oz.
Marine grade 316 stainless steel is used for the closure and is guaranteed to never rust or break. You can choose either a clevis pin or screw pin for the closure and Survival Straps also includes a break-away pin.
Each day I practiced what Rumi suggested. I learned how to ‘welcome and entertain’ my managers’ rudeness. I treated her ‘honorably’ with respect in our meetings; all the ‘sorrows’… the insults, rules and meanness she aimed at me I was able to endure because I knew in my heart I was a success and not a failure. The picture of some ‘new delight’ waiting for me in my next job kept me focused and strong.

The communications equipment may include a multi-band receiver/scanner, a citizens band (CB) radio, portable “walkie-talkies” with rechargeable batteries, and a portable battery-powered television. The power supplies may include a diesel or gasoline generator with a one-month fuel supply, auto battery and charger, extension cord, flashlights, rechargeable batteries (with recharger), an electric multi meter, and a test light. Defense items include a revolver, semi-automatic pistol, rifle, shotgun, ammunition, mace or pepper spray, and a large knife such as a KA-BAR or a bowie knife.
NOTE — A “micro torch” isn’t a tool commonly touted by survivalists. But we live in the modern age — there’s no reason we can’t use modern tools. The Special Forces use a number of modern tools, as do professional explorers who climb the highest peaks, sail the largest oceans, and others who dive to the ocean floor. Besides — do you really want to count on a primitive bow drill or flint and steel coming through for you in an emergency? REMEMBER — this is an emergency we’re talking about. High winds. Heavy rain. Flooding. Etc.
ThinkGeek provides tools for the tactical advantage. Whether your idea of “enjoying the outdoors” is your own backyard or escaping off the grid, we have just the right supplies to help you prep for an emergency situation (zombie apocalypse) or a weekend spent enjoying your patio with neighbors.
It’s the same with quite a bit of the gear on this list as well. Sure it’s helpful to have a firesteel, but if you don’t know how to make sparks from it, it’ll be rendered practically useless. You’ll want to at least test out a lot of the gear you have to make sure you’ll know how to use it when you need to, and you’ll also want to use the gear enough so you’re sure it won’t break on you when you need it the most.

In common words, the goal of human existence is to scramble for power and wealth.  Human society is just a stage for race, or competition. To the losers, competition is very cruel. Competition causes a lot of stress, so not everyone likes competition. If you give up, others, including your parents, will look down on you, and tell you that you are useless. Therefore, every one of us born in this society is forced to take part in the competition. Why is human society a stage for competition? Because human beings have needs. The first need is oxygen, and then the needs for food, water, clothes, housing and transportation are followed. All these things are not free, have limited supply, except oxygen. Nobody can survive without food, water, clothes and house, so, people feel unsafe, and then they desire for all these. This desire is limitless. Even if someone has gathered enough wealth for the rest of his life, he still wants to collect more for his children, even his grandchildren. The result of limited resources plus limitless desires is competition.

Interesting list, but I don’t see a knife sharpener. Lansky and Smith both make pocket size models for short term field use by those who can’t free hand a whet stone. Spyderco and Lansky also make systems more suitable for long term use. There are others as well, some quite pricy. Might be a good review topic.

Sure, you could cook up your pot of survival stew over the campfire like a caveman, but come on folks. We’ve put people into space! Don’t you think it’s time we use space-age technology to make outdoor cooking easier? Jetboil is the Cadillac of camp stoves. It’s super quick to boil, lightweight, and very well engineered. The blended fuel can burn well, even in extreme cold, and the best part is, this stove is very thrifty with fuel use. You may be able to cook dozens of meals on the smallest size of fuel canister. These stoves are very efficient, easy to operate, and clean. The gear even nests for compact storage.
I ordered the Richter 15 knife (paid shipping cost only) and surprisingly, it arrived in just a few days! I like that! When I opened it up, it was slower than I anticipated and it didn’t fully open. To me, no big deal because of the price & it’s a sharp, sturdy knife. Then I saw the Richter30 advertised with an additional 25% off! I clicked the button, another & the back button & quickly made a huge mess of my bank account! I called the company and the gal was awesome.
They obviously sell things they don’t even have in stock, or maybe that how they buy their stock; you buy from them and then they order from someone else? That would explain a lot of this crap, but someone needs to be held accountable for this. It shouldn’t be a hit or miss on getting an item you have already paid for in a reasonable amount of time. Three weeks should be the latest you get anything through the mail, and that’s if it is shipped from China, not 3 states over. It’s a 12-hour drive from my home in Alabama to Austin, Texas. I know for a fact because I used to make that drive when I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and had to drive through Austin, which was about 45 minutes away to get there.
Is there no point going into the niche if you have competition from everyone buying that WSO and SurvivalLife who you can never really compete with. Probably even if you had the budget, which I def. don’t. I merely have enough to get a site up and buy that WSO but if that’s a waste then I’m scared.
One such person said that the purpose of life was ‘to love and be loved’. At first I thought it to be naive and stupid and did not even give it a second thought. Then I wondered about why an educated person would put forward such a simplistic and spiritually motivated reason among a  set of extremely logical and convincing reasons given by others. It was then I started thinking about this seemingly illogical purpose of life.
In survival and SHTF situations, you’ll want to make sure to defend yourself and your family against both other people and animals. There are a variety of ways which you can do this, although of course some work better than others. Certainly look into attaining a firearm if this is legally permissible in your locality, and if you ever consider you may like to have it as a backup option. If you are interested in firearms, make sure to learn about them and train with them prior to an emergency situation. You can’t expect to be good with a firearm your first time shooting.
A survival kit is something most hikers, hunters, and explorers will never break open. It will sit in the bottom of a backpack, potentially for years, encased in a waterproof vessel of some sort, lightweight and out of the way.

Disclaimer: Just in case it’s not obvious I’m not claiming that if you copy this model or create a similar site you’ll make a million dollars a month. You might make $0. It just an example of what is possible.
Very interesting post on this authority blog. But the blog design is very uninspiring and boring looking. I wonder how they manage to do that. They certainly do have a lot of shares for example the blog post that was posted about 5 days ago has over 300 shares which seems to be driving the traffic. But all in all the content they have is very good and impressive.
I am sorry to say this but your tent is worthless. A true survivalist would have a 4 season tent. One used on expeditions to alaska or antartic summer. You have to survivor a winter in Minnisota, Michigan, Maine or other very cold area. Most tents bought at stores like walmart will only last one or two years of constant use. So unless you have put out big bucks for a UV protected tent and stove heater, your dead in winter.
I prefer the Eton FR 350 radio over the Ambient Weather Emergency Radio. The problem is that neither radio can really take the beating of a survival situation, and the price of the FR 350 has become ridiculous since they were discontinued. We have a money-making market available for anyone who can produce an emergency radio that uses alternative power sources and is built to withstand a real crisis.

Other small kits are wearable and built into everyday carry survival bracelets or belts. Most often these are paracord bracelets with tools woven inside. Several tools such as firestarter, buckles, whistles and compass are on the exterior of the gear and smaller tools are woven inside the jewelry or belt and only accessible by taking the bracelet apart.
If you can’t believe in God, one thing is sure – you are given limited time to live on this planet, too little to solve how life and everything were created. You received a chance to live. Are you glad? Do you know how to use your time?
I really appreciate the thoroughness of this article, but I have to call you out on the survival knife choice. United Cutlery makes stainless steel p.o.s knives. I own that very model shown and the blade wiggles badly in the handle. This is because it has no tang to speak of to accommodate a hollow handle.
In July 2013, I purchased the wide Survival Bracelet with the stainless screw pin closure for my boyfriend’s birthday. Brandon is a firefighter with the Citizens Fire Department in Lock Haven, PA. Brandon is a former Fire Chief of the Bald Eagle Fire Company. He is currently a volunteer fireman at Citizens on his spare time and a part time driver with the department when needed. Brandon and I started dating 7 months ago, and I was and still am very clueless about the world of “firefighting.” When Brandon moved from Bald Eagle to Lock Haven with my children and me, he was very hesitant to join another company because he knew how demanding the firehouse is and how dangerous it can be. Knowing his passion and love for it, I gave him my full support to go and do what he loves and was born to do. Two months into being with the Citizens he has excelled from a volunteer firefighter to a paid driver as well as being a full time dispatcher with 911 and a part time dispatcher with Penn State University. He saves many lives day in and day out, and I’m forever thankful for the survival strap to have saved his life.
If you’re interested in grabbing some inexpensive survival gear from outdoor retailers like Cabella’s, REI, and Patagonia, take a look at our massive list of knife & outdoor retailers’ sale, deal, & clearance pages! All the best outdoor gear discount pages to visit linked to on one page.
Hollow handle knives are a gimmick, and the paltry amount of gear that they hold cannot make up for their weak construction. Don’t bet your life on a Rambo wannabe blade. Get something that you can rely on with your life.
I like what it has for the price, this kit has the essentials for a family facing an emergency situation ~ including a few things I might not have though of. I like the fact that there is room in the bags to add personal items like shoes or clothes. When the kit arrived, one of the pieces was damaged, and the company was incredibly responsive in sending a replacement, I was most happy with the service.
According to the Survival Life website, membership to the Lamplighter society provides an easy, practical way of obtaining information related to survival preparedness, without having to spend years of trial and error. With this in mind, membership is claimed to provide the following benefits:
If you are lost and food is not something you can access by swiping your credit card, unravel your bracelet to create a bow and arrow which you can use to hunt furry little creatures. By using a sharp knife and a flexible yet hardy twig, you can build your own bow. For arrows, gather many pieces of tree shoots and scavenge for bird feathers.
It’s a massive list for those who’d like to check their own self-made kits off in comparison to something comprehensive – to see if there’s anything they’ve missed that they may have wanted to take if only they’d remembered it.

As Survival Straps mentions in the owner’s manual, a brand new paracord strap will be quite rigid and stiff at first and will soften up over time with use. With the initial strap rigidity and the shackle style closure, it can be a bit tricky to put on this strap at first.
There is so much you can do with a tarp, it is a multitool all in itself. Besides the obvious of keeping gear dry and being used as a shelter, they can also be used for signaling and be easily turned into a stretcher to carry injured party members.

Here’s a poem by the 13th century poet and scholar Rumi that I go right to whenever I need help to stabilize myself and feel good. It always makes me smile. Rumi describes life as like a ‘guest house’ where all kinds of things come and go and how we always have the choice to welcome it all, no matter what happens, and not to be a helpless victim. What does it say to you?

This gift is one that my husband has purchased for co-workers or others on several occasions, and it is always appreciated. The knife really is sharp.. It is super convenient to be able to pull out a knife from your wallet whenever you need. We’ve used it while hiking, organizing the garage, opening packages, and a variety of other activities. The knife fits in your wallet as is the size of a credit card. It isn’t bulky. My husband has owned his for two years and still finds it sharp and useful. I am sure we will give this gift again in the future.
This is the most comprehensive survival kit in the three-kit VIVE series. It is designed to be both an urban survival kit, as well as handling wilderness survival for greater than 72 hours. This kit has components selected for longer duration use and designed for one more…
I agree with you. 90% of the people who think they will survive from any list will be sorely mistaken. They will die. This list or any other list a reference for people to think about.
I think you’re a little short on security. I wouldn’t dream of bugging out or trying to survive post-TEOTWAWKI without a good handgun (or two) in 9mm Parabellum, a rifle in 5.56/223 Remington (whether AR or otherwise), and at least a 308 bolt action for longer range/harder hits.
To survive a natural or man made event either at home or away. This could be a hurricane, earthquake, tornado damage, a vehicle break down, even just a snowstorm that makes the roads unpassable. In many places, if there’s some bad weather on the way, the grocery stores get cleaned out.
I was curious to know how anybody can store radio waves in a bracelet (or anything else), but Walchle was unable to be much help. Very hush hush, he implied. The Department of Defense is testing this technology and the bracelets for military applications. Who in the DOD specifically? And where? He could not tell me because of security issues. “Maybe I can get a letter from them just acknowledging they’re looking into it,” he said.
These are absolutely excellent points about different ways of generating energy and how important storing the energy you have is! I actually think you put it wonderfully. You’re 110% correct, having all your eggs in one basket is never as good as having multiple forms of energy. Always great to have 2 or 3 backups, certainly. And storing generated energy is obviously equally as important as generating it.
The study of how people control one another in order to gain indirect control over things is called politics. The study of how people make use of the control over things to indirectly control other people is called economics. American psychologist Abraham Maslow says that there are seven levels of human need, namely, (1) food, water, (2) safety, (3) belongingness, love, (4) esteem, (5) curiosity, (6) beauty, symmetry, and (7) self-actualization. Only after man’s lower level of needs have been satisfied, will he recognize the need at the next higher level. Maslow believes that the highest desire of man is to “self-actualize”. In my opinion, though, the meaning of self-actualization is not clear enough. Instead, I believe that  the ultimate goal for human existence is to control everything that exists, meaning the entire universe. Things will become “beautiful” after they are controlled. For example, people think that today’s life is more beautiful than yesterday’s because they have greater control over life today than they had yesterday. Otherwise, they would not say so. Curiosity is only a means to achieve the end, that is, control. One has to understand a thing before controlling it. Only when the structure of atom is understood can atomic power be controlled. As a result of the natural course of evolution, human beings have only two eyes and ten fingers. By the same token, the human desire to control and be curious is the result of evolution that has been going on for millions of years. Those ape-men that lacked the desire to know and control had died out long time ago. The so-called esteem in real terms is the desire to do well in everything and outperform others. People compete and compare with one another to see who can control more. This is the primary motivation force behind human social development. Social animals are “social” and live together because they are linked by a common force. The force that links the Earth and the Moon is called gravity, and the force that links social animals together is belongingness and love, an inherited instinct of social animals. Adults do not have to teach kids to make friends with other kids because it is in their instinct. Without friends, people will feel lonely. Among social animals, there is mutual attraction (belongingness and love) as well as repelling force (hatred) in competition for control. In other words, people co-operate and compete with one another. Co-operation increases the chance of survival for people as a group while competition and selfishness increase the chance of survival for individuals. Both forces are necessary and are results of the natural course of evolution over the years. Sometimes, though, competition can also increase the chance of survival for a group. A typical example would be two male deer competing for a herd of female deer. In the end, only the stronger male deer has the chance of mating therefore their offspring will have a better chance of survival.

It could be a good idea if you have an interest in starting a preppers website but do you have any interest in this niche as you’ll probably struggle otherwise. Plus it will be difficult to create content with authority if you know nothing about it and the people in this niche will see that right away.
We’ve discussed survival firearms many times on this site (survival guns/survival rifles). And while there is no such thing as one single “best” survival gun, there’s a lot to think about and consider.
So answering your question – yes, life is a survival for all but not its purpose. Survival is just a part of your life and it depends how big pie it could be of your cake of life. If you choose to be happy like the first sort of people I have described above, life would be less of survival and suffering and would be more beautiful and pleasurable. Have a beautiful purpose in life then life’s purpose wouldn’t be survival.
Another form of fire-starting because you can never have too many. If you currently have regular matches in with your survival gear, you making a mistake. If regular matches get wet, they are worthless.
Very comprehensive list, the first one I’ve seen a Personal Location Beacon on. I will comment on one aspect, communication, my family is scattered all over the country and I’m sure (hopefully) they will all want to know I’m OK. We have one member of the family as a contact for all of us to call on our cell phones. Local communication lines will be jammed, internet will be down. The next goal will be to remain safe for the first 3 days, but communication is #1. Good article! A lot of knowledge here.
– Life has many lessons to be learned from. We all run into pain, misfortunes, challenges, obstacles, stress, insults, unhappiness but dig into yourself and climb out of the dark hole any way you can. Things do change. The hard times do make you stronger and wiser and hopefully kinder too. You’ll heal and grow and very often, out of the pain, comes something so much better… more wonderful and… surprising.

They don’t even send an email to apologize or anything to tell you what’s going on unless you contact them 1st. Maybe they hope you forget about ordering anything after so long? I have noticed in the other reviews they all had the same complaints about slow shipping, like they only ship out on Christmas day or something. My wife has already chewed me out for buying the items, so I would much rather have had the items than the money back since I’ve already paid for them (twice).

I believe that human society is like a race. People are born athletes participating in a race, not physical but intellectual. Human life is just like a marathon race. Physical marathon race has a finishing line whereas intellectual marathon race will never end. Instead, human life has a direction or goal, and the goal is called “control…”. In this world, anything other than human a thing (including animals). The ultimate desire for human is to exercise the greatest possible control over the other human and things around him. Control on human is “power”, and control on things is “wealth”. Power is measured by positions and ranks whereas wealth is measured by money terms. With the control on human comes indirectly some control on things, such as politicians using their power to gain materialistic benefits. Likewise, with the control over things comes indirectly some control over human, such as rich people hiring other people to work for and serve them. Politicians also have direct control over things, such as government-owned enterprises and assets. Nevertheless, this kind of control is not absolute and politicians cannot blatantly take the things under control as their own assets. On the contrary, the assets of a capitalist are entirely privately owned and the capitalist has absolute control over them.
After mine softened up a bit and with a little practice, I found it wasn’t much harder than putting on Apple’s Sport Band. One trick that made it easier for me was putting the clevis pin through one side of the shackle, then using one hand to line up the other side while pulling both straps together with the other hand.
