“The Existentialist’s Survival Guide is a remarkable book. We can’t think of another writer who so thoroughly understands Kierkegaard and his followers, presents their thought more accessibly than they themselves did, and—crucially— relates them concretely to the dark places in his own life, and ours.” — Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein, authors of Plato and a Platypus Walk Into A Bar, and Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates
It may sound a good idea just to keep traveling even after the sunset if you are not exhausted completely. However, it is one of the most dangerous things that you can do in the wild. Make sure that all your traveling can wait until the break of the dawn. Traveling through the wilderness in the dark is an open invitation to danger.
Indeed, if you’re lost or injured, the right gear can mean the difference between a comfortable night spent outdoors and a cold one. Items like a whistle or a signal mirror can alter fate to issue rescue instead of abandonment.
But to quote the wise men who have walked this fair earth in ages past, questionable advice is technically better than no advice—so here are ten unusual survival tips that could end up saving your life. And as a disclaimer, don’t actually try number three.
As much as you love hiking, it is doubtful you love the resulting blisters. If you cannot seem to win the blister war no matter how broken-in your hiking boots are, don’t fret. In early April 2009, shortly after its release, it was ranked number 6 in Amazon.com’s overall book sales rankings, but fell to number 33 a week later. By the end of the month it had fallen to number 98. The book’s initial popularity caught librarians unprepared because it was considered a niche title and had not been reviewed by the major book review publications. According to Library Journal, the topic struck a chord with a small but vociferous group of people concerned with survivalism who share a sense of societal anxiety associated with the economic recession. The journal went on to say that Patriots was reportedly originally conceived as a nonfiction guide. According to a number of Amazon.com reviewers, the novel will not win any literary prizes; its strength lies in its practical reassurances, focus on guns, and Christian ideology. Librarians then scrambled to purchase copies of the book to meet the unanticipated demand.
The power has gone out in your home, meaning the food in your fridge and freezer might be subject to spoilage. Most foods remain just fine so long as the outage does not last more than four hours and you are not constantly opening and shutting the appliance. If you are not sure what to keep and what to throw out followin… Continue Reading →

The question we must ask is this – Is Trump aware that his policies are creating a perfect distraction for those same banking elites? I believe we will know for certain the answer to that before 2018 is over.
Option one: Embrace it. Listen to the song all the way through, at full volume, ideally singing along. The idea is that by confronting your brain with the full version, your earworm will end when the song does.
One final thought to consider are the side effects. The toxicity and flavor of iodine can be a little problematic. The iodine tablets are generally not a good choice for pregnant women, anyone with thyroid issues, or shellfish allergies. Picky children are also notorious for failing to drink iodine-infused water, which could lead to dehydration and other serious repercussions in an already dicey emergency. The Katadyn product is chlorine-based, the flavor of which dissipates over the allotted 4-hour waiting period. That product is widely tolerated and tastes much better.
I am impressed with this little book. No book can tell you everything about every situation, but if you have even a little bit of resourcefulness in you, this book conveys a lot of useful information on a wide range of topics.Great book! You can always learn something new when it comes to survival training. It’s compact and travels with me everywhere.
Our number 6 goes out to Rourke’s Modern Survival Online, which aims to teach and inform the average person about how to prepare for difficult times ahead. Bring survival gear. Basic survival tools such as a knife, a fire steel (metal match), some matches (in a waterproof canister), some cord (550 paracord is best), a whistle, a space blanket, a signaling mirror, water purifying tablets, and a compass can mean the difference between life and death. Even if you are only out on a day hike, be sure to bring the essentials.
Shelter is often your most critical survival priority in the wild, so make sure you always have a way to get out of the elements. The SOL Emergency Bivvy is a sleeping bag-style of sack made from tear-resistant polyethylene with a high visibility orange color to assist your rescue, if needed. This bivvy reflects back 90 percent of your body heat to keep you warm in extreme cold. The bivvy will even help you stay dry in the rain with sealed seam edges. It even comes with a handy stuff sack for compact storage. All this, and it’s only 3.8-ounces. You’d be crazy not to take this with you.
No problem. In my case the teacher (Math & English, including grammar) was my grandfather. In my household “ain’t” was a four letter word, and improper verb tense was a minor crime. I have most of it ready to go except for some paragraph cleanup. Cut & paste from the original pdf, a little editing, a little Perl script for the tables, & viola. When complete I plan to send it to MD to do with what he wants. Perhaps a few of us can help turn it into a new improved & expanded edition.
In March 2011, Rawles formulated the American Redoubt movement. Rawles proposes five western states (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, eastern Oregon, and eastern Washington) as a safe haven for conservative Christians and Jews. The was endorsed by former Presidential candidate Chuck Baldwin, who had recently relocated his entire extended family to western Montana. One of its adherents, John Jacob Schmidt, started a weekly podcast called Radio Free Redoubt to help further the movement. There is no data to measure how many people have moved into the area in response to this plan.
I am doing a research project for school, and one of the things I’m doing is finding some of the survival items that might have been used by the ancient Greeks. Though a lot of the items listed here are modern, I found this website to be a huge help!
The US Army uses several basic survival kits, mainly for aviators, some of which are stored in carrying bags. Aviators in planes with ejection seats have survival kits in a vest and the seat pan, the survival vest worn by US helicopter crews also contains some basic survival items.
Be careful with the Home Depot lids….they are NOT as strong as sheetrock mud buckets or others. Won’t take a lot of beating before they crack……use a rubber mallet to avoid problems. I’m sure HD uses the minimum bid contractor, just like all their house brand stuff.
On cigarettes: the kinds in boxes wrapped in cellophane go stale fairly easily and quickly. Tobacco for cigarettes is sold in tin cans (size #5 I think) and often include rolling papers inside the can, but not filters. For many people, a non-filtered cigarette is better than no cigarette though. The tobacco stays fresher longer in a can (probably forever) and of course the can protects the tobacco better from the elements or from being squished than does cellophane.
