A survival kit is something most hikers, hunters, and explorers will never break open. It will sit in the bottom of a backpack, potentially for years, encased in a waterproof vessel of some sort, lightweight and out of the way.

We’ve received a lot of reader questions asking us how to prep for diabetes over the years. How many? I couldn’t possibly count. It’s a lot, and not all from preppers who are themselves diabetics either. We get a number of concerned relat…
A Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device is only an effective tool for someone experienced in the basics of climbing. Climbing and descending by rope is not that difficult to learn and many cities have recreation centers and outfitters with indoor walls where you can be taught how to climb by an instructor. (To be more prepared for the wilderness, follow up with instruction on an actual rock face or cliff.)
There is an email address, [email protected], available for customers who need to issue a comment or complaint, as well as a traditional mailing address of 4330 Gaines Ranch Rd., Suite 120 Austin TX, 78735 and a phone number of 512-366-3332.
Unless you’re on the open prairie, if you’re crossing through the wilderness there’s a great chance you’re going to come to a cliff or ridge or canyon at some point. The drop before you may be only 20 yards at it’s shallowest point — but that’s a 60 foot drop. You can’t climb down that. Now you’re stuck.
More popularly known as paracord bracelets (because they’re made from the same material as military issued parachutes and equipment), these bands are more than just accessories. They’re actually cords that are woven together, which you can unravel and use partly whenever you need the cords to tie stuff up. Almost every single piece of the paracord bracelet is usable string – right to the small threads that are used to keep the end of the cords together. Use them to tie stuff, hang food, set up traps, and even as tinder to start fires.
Similarly, you can survive about three weeks without food. Again, that does not mean that you will be up and about throughout the three weeks. It just means that you can ‘survive’ and not die if you don’t eat food for three weeks.
If you’re struggling with the whole authority versus niche thing, this post on EmpireFlippers examines both and their pro’s and con’s and there’s a good video from Jill and Josh of ScrewTheNineToFive worth watching.
YouTube censorship has taken an ugly turn. Not long after the tech giant announced that their censorship agenda was because of overzealous new employees, Mike Adams (The Health Ranger) lost his entire channel consisting of 1700 videos.
When the sun hits the tarp, the air trapped inside the hole heats up, which in turn evaporates the moisture in the dirt. As that moisture rises, it will condense on the underside of the tarp and run down to the center—the lowest point. A cup or bowl on the floor of the hole right below this point will catch the pure, distilled water as it drips down—potentially saving your life.
I purchased 3 of these (one for each car glovebox)…its a handy little kit, but one of the flashlights didn’t work (no, not just the battery) and when I contacted the seller directly, I received no response…disappointing
1 the people or organizations creating these sites ‘albeit’ with a wealth of information – are making money from their knowledge and advertising which in turn allows them to procure what is needed for their family and friends, which they should be paid for there tim.
Venous bleeding will be dark red, and treatment mimicking that of arterial bleeding is called for. Capillary bleeding, such as a small scrape, is minor. So slap a Band-Aid (or handkerchief) on it and stop your whining.
His novels tend to be heavy on acronyms and technical jargon, while his non-fiction books concentrate on practical skills and tools. In the Acknowledgments note to his book Tools For Survival, Rawles credits David Brin, Algis Budrys, Tom Clancy, Bruce D. Clayton, Colonel Jeff Cooper, Frederick Forsyth, Pat Frank, Gordon Dickson, Friedrich Hayek, Henry Hazlitt, Ernest Hemingway, Dean Ing, Elmer Keith, Herbert W. McBride, Ludwig von Mises, Dr. Gary North, Arthur W. Pink, John Piper, Jerry Pournelle, Ayn Rand, Lew Rockwell, Murray Rothbard, George R. Stewart and Mel Tappan as influential to his writing. In his blog, Rawles also cites Robert A. Heinlein as an influence, and often quotes him.
Once you get a fire going, it is important to make provisions for the next one. You must make sure that the next fire that you start does not require the amount of work that was needed to start the first one. There are a couple of things that you can do to achieve it.
Rawles is the Senior Editor of SurvivalBlog.com, a blog on survival and preparedness topics. It has been described as the guiding light of the prepper movement and the grandaddy of survival blogs. He concentrates on encouraging family preparedness for many possible threats toward society. In his various writings, Rawles has warned about socio-economic collapse, pandemics, X-class solar flares taking down power grids, terrorist attacks, and food shortages.
Fernando “Ferfal” Aguirre is unique in the sense that he has lived it (and is still living it). Easily pulling in our number 8 spot, Surviving in Argentina is about one man’s experience in a post economic-collapsed country and how he has had to adapt to the challenges and changes that came about. His insights provide a great model whereby many North Americans (and Europeans) can prepare for an impending economic collapse on their own soil.
Over the past several years, the Remington group, or the group that owns Remington, haven’t had a very good track record with new firearms. As a matter of fact, it has been one failure after another, in my humble opinion. We had the Remington REM380, and it had a lot of problems. Then, there was the R51, and I’m not totally convinced they have worked out all the bugs in this one just yet. And Remington took over manufacturing Bushmaster AR-15 style rifles. I had an early Remington “Bushmaster”, and it wouldn’t group at 25 yards; it patterned like a shotgun, no matter what ammo was used. Then the grand ol’ 1911, that was one Remington used to make during WW2. The early, new model guns were a failure. They would shoot loose inside of a couple hundred rounds. I kid you not.
High power LED light (able to have batteries replaced, and carry an extra battery), white lens, with signaling capabilities. Strobe versions are available for some lights. Use lithium cells only, due to superior shelf life.

Like other portable water filters though it has it’s limits — a Lifestraw can’t filter salt (to filter salt water you’ll have to distil it) or heavy metals, chemicals or viruses. In a survival situation or urban disaster you’ll have to use your head. Avoid drinking from ground water sources in a populated area following severe flooding or a massive earthquake. This ground water can be contaminated with chemicals and sewage. You’ll want to move further out of the area to a water source that is less likely to be contaminated with chemicals and sewage before using your Lifestraw.
I’m always on a tight budget, so yes, much of my kit is recycled or repurposed. Always remember, you don’t have to go out and buy everything. Adapt, improvise, and overcome. The most beautiful trout I ever caught was caught on a fresh cut bit of bamboo about 4 feet long, dental floss, and improvised wooden fish hook with a beetle tied to it as bait. That beetle put up one hell of a fight. Dental floss is an excellent investment for bugging in or out. Besides the obvious use of dental hygeine, it’s very tough, cheap, compact and lightweight in it’s own little super convenient package, and can be used in application where a bit of string would serve better than 550 cord/paracord. Can even be used to close wounds in a pinch, multiple strands can be braided together for applications requiring more tensile strength when 550 cord is unavailable, and can be woven into a net. I used some braided strands in Afghanistan as an improvised bootlace to serve my needs until I got back to my patrol base where my spare laces were stowed.
I too am using Home Depot orange buckets. Very good sealing gasketed lids and the price is right. I contacted the manufacturer and they assured me they are not food grade. My bags and oxygen absorbers arrive tomorrow, and it begins…..
