Some survivalists will, no doubt, want to stay as far away from these items as possible, as most of them will over time become useless in a state of complete apocalyptic devastation. That being said, for short-term prepping emergencies, at the very least, these items are likely to come in quite handy, especially in our power/electricity driven world of today.

Virtually indestructible, the “SUMA” box is machined from a single block of aircraft grade 6061 aluminum, and its contents are secured by a rubber gasket and Velcro® straps. The SUMA container is strong enough for digging, and its Type III hard anodized aluminum allows for safe boiling and cooking. This is a small, lightweight, and extremely valuable kit that we hope you’ll never have to use. But should you or a loved one ever deploy it, you’ll be glad you chose what is, without a doubt, the best survival kit on the market.
If you’re a prepper, first aid books are a must-have, and general survival books are a very good idea. If you’re concentrating on wilderness survival, it would be beneficial to keep a few good foraging and plant biology books on you, ones that will let you know what’s edible in your region and what’s not: because you definitely don’t want to be nibbling on poison plants you thought were fine to eat in a survival/SHTF situation.
THIN, LIGHTWEIGHT, COMFORTABLE – At just two credit cards thick, our unique survival knife is great for survivalists, preppers and people with active lifestyles. It also fits comfortable in a wallet, purse, bug out bag or your pocket.
ENHANCED SAFETY – Along with an improved comfort grip, our folding knife has a locking design to prevent blade accidents when not in use, as well as a childproof mechanism to keep children from unlocking it and getting hurt.
Many outdoor enthusiasts love to agonize over what belongs in their survival kit. Here are the supplies that we think belong in a small pack for quick trips into the wilderness. Of course, a GPS unit and a satellite would be handy, but this collection is meant to be a cheap backup for times when those items are damaged or inaccessible.
Whether it’s a time around the corner or it’s simply today, if you’re a recreational hiker or hunter, a signal flare gun (and extra flares) can help you be found when others are searching for you. When you shop for an “Orion 12 Gauge HP Red Signal Kit” purchase a few flares as back-up.
Ordered tactical pen +3 on Oct 11,2016 and over a month now still nothing. Never recieved confirmation of order nor shipping info. I’ve emailed them again today regarding this so let’s see if I finally get a real reply instead of an automatic one.

– Mora knives are spectacular – look at them, in the event that you can’t find one, check out a local bait/tackle shop, chances are there is a knife just like it there – same sheath and all (I just found this out after owning a tom of Moras, and the steel is just as good, with a slightly thicker blade..)
– You mention a lighter, some sort of wind proof thing. They are cool, but they also take a special fluid to use, so you would have to carry that along on a forced hike, where as a standard old Bic will be good enough AND if the fluid does run out, you still have a bunch of sparks left from the flint in it. When I have people come to my bushcraft classes, they bring the strangest stuff, iron strikers and flint, bow drills… I break out my 59 cent Bic (in cammo though) and light my fire in about 10 seconds….

An idea on one area that I seem to run into a lot of contention from some people with: electronics. If you’re bugged in and can power them, good for you. If you’re mobile, ditch ’em (most of them). Batteries seem lightweight, but that two pounds of batteries become 40 pounds after 20 miles. Anything that can’t be charged or operated on solar or hand cranks, in my opinion, has no place in a back pack. And of the things that can, many are simply unnecessary. Chromebook for maps, manuals and documents? Get a good smart phone with high capacity storage or OTG storage capabilities with multiple flash drives. Half the weight, just as versatile, twice as mobile. Not to mention, easier to pack. If you’re planning on getting rescued, or if you’re at all interested in navigation, communication, or really any way of knowing what’s happening in the outside world after the shit hits the fan, you might be interested in adding a few of the survival gear items below to your stockpile. Though not every survivalist/prepper will be interested in staying connected if the SHTF, if this is important to you, make sure you have a way to do it! Survival gear isn’t just a necessity for adventurers in the deep wilderness. It’s an insurance policy in which every outdoor enthusiast should invest. By carrying the supplies to provide for your own needs, you’re ready in the event that you get caught in an emergency in the wild. And if that emergency never comes—you still have some cool and useful toys to enjoy. Before your next excursion, check out my favorite wilderness survival items—and consider whether they’re a good fit for your own needs. You have a freedom to choose your own purpose, and this pressure to choose can be viewed also as burden. When you feel you must find your purpose, you can look at your mind from distance and be conscious about it.
We covered Survival Knives generally in our Bug Out Bag Essentials post but they are so useful it is worth re-hashing here. Generally you are better off getting a solid, full tang knife from a trusted knifemaker such as Ontario, Camillus, Becker, or Gerber. Stay away from hollow handled survival knives if at all possible. The small amount of storage space will not make up for the overall inferior build quality. For more information on choosing a good knife for any outdoors situation, check out our comprehensive guide by CLICKING HERE.
Food in a bug-out vehicle include hundreds of pounds of wheat, rice, and beans, and enough honey, powdered milk, canned goods, bottled fruit, vitamins, dehydrated fruits and vegetables, salt, pepper, spices, and oil for several months. In addition, the kits often contain high-calorie energy bars, a cooking kit, utensils, liquid soap, and towels. The water supplies may include bottled water, filtering kit, bottles, collapsible water containers, and chlorine bleach for water purification. Food preparation and washing equipment may include items such as a grain grinder, a bread mixer, a strainer, a manual can opener, a steam canner with canning jars and O-rings, cutlery, knives, an electric 12-volt cooler icebox, kerosene lamps and heaters, kerosene or propane stoves, extra fuel, a clothes wringer, a foot-operated treadle sewing machine, and an electric hot plate (which would require an inverter to operate off a car battery).
The interesting thing about this Survival Life is it wasn’t created out of passion for the niche but instead because the Digital Marketer team saw an opportunity to create an authority site that had huge profit potential.
In order to really evaluate the strap, I decided I had to unravel one. It was hard to bring myself to do it because the wrist straps are so nice! Unraveling the paracord was not hard to do, but it wasn’t very fast. It took me more than a minute to get one wrist strap apart because it is woven so tightly. When I was finished, I had about 12 feet of paracord that could be very handy in an emergency.
Can’t believe I missed this comment! Just took a look at the stove and it looks great! Want to get my hands on one to test it out. Looks like it would do absolutely perfectly as a backup/emergency stove. Thanks so much for recommending it, Darlene!
Tips: Climbing and descending cliffs and slopes can be a very effective way to get yourself out of a dangerous area fast, get yourself passed otherwise impassible obstacles, or even get yourself to prime hunting grounds.
I don’t know if this has been shared or not, but Penicillin and Amoxicillin should be included in the list of medicines, along with cephalosporin (Keflex). All of these I believe can still be found over the counter as farming supplies. Be careful, however, as the dosage for humans will be majorly different than that on the label. I would suggest getting a dosage chart for each antibiotic.

I can appreciate the flexibility of the Sawyer system, nice tip about the gravity fed filter hack! I really do like the Lifestraw for casual rambling in the wilderness based on size and weight (check out my review). Thankfully in Canada fresh water is never really an issue! 😉
These are some excellent tips for sure! I will definitely be making separate B.O.B., home, car, etc. articles, but I wanted to have one that was just a huge list of kit people may have missed out on using with regards to just everything all at once. I know it’s a bit of a mess, but still hope it’s helpful to some to have the suggestions like this (a.k.a. all in one place). But yes! Definitely a good idea to have separation, which I will definitely do (eventually) with some new articles.

The problem with recommending a backpacking tent for survival is that good ones can be expensive; on top of that, tents are built for recreational use — not for long term use should you find yourself in a time of disaster and having to live off the land for possibly several weeks or even months.
The leanest survival kits are stored in Altoids tins and the like, and they include just the bare backwoods essentials: matches, fire-starters, fishing line, a tiny compass, water purification tablets, a whistle, a small rescue mirror, and so on.
Nobody knows when a disaster might strike, but being prepared beforehand can help your survive. Whether it is a natural disaster in your local area, such as a earthquake or hurricane, or a man-made disaster, such as a terrorist attack or fire, you need to have survival kits with the proper emergency supplies. Disasters can force you to evacuate your neighborhood, workplace or school or can confine you to your home. Having the right survival kits, first-aid kits and emergency supplies on hand ahead of time is like having a spare tire in the trunk of your car: You hope not to have a flat tire, but it’s nice to know that a spare tire is there, ready for use, and to keep you going. Emergency preparedness is essential in this day and age.
If your aim is not that great, maybe your patience is. Another way to catch your breakfast in the wilderness is to set up a trap. Use a section of your bracelet for triggers and snare nooses. Furthermore, the inner strands of the strap can be used as the string of a Paiute Deadfall.

Thanks Jacques, I suspect that a lot of people don’t consider comms to be that important but it will determine your route to safety as well as the next step you can make without incurring extreme risk. Not to mention the ability to be rescued in a Katrina-like situation. Thanks for dropping by!
Emergency food bars, preferably products with 2,400 or 3,600 calories and contain no coconut or tropical oils to which many people may have an allergic reaction, in addition to non-perishable food which does not require cooking or refrigeration

It is good to have a few of these as they have many, many uses and are very light and small. Plastic bags can be used to carry water, keep clothes and fire starting kits dry, store food, and organize small items.
A bit of a luxury item in a survival scenario but drinking water out of your hands is not convenient. Plus, if you happen to have coffee, soup, or freeze-dried meals you’ll need a bowl or cup to eat these meals.
On a budget European trip with his wife, Tim Leatherman found he never had the right tools for quick fixes from roadside breakdowns to faulty hotel plumbing. Because what he needed didn’t exist, he returned to the United States to build the multi-tool he wanted. Eight years and many rejections later, he finally had a tool he was proud of. And in 1983 with the first order of 500, the Leatherman Tool Group, Inc. was born.
In addition, the kits may contain typical individual “survival kit” items, such as nylon tarps, extra clothes and coats, blankets, sleeping bags, matches or other fire starting equipment, a compass and maps, flashlights, toilet paper, soap, a pocket knife and bowie knife, a fishing kit, a portable camping stove, a power inverter, backpack, paper and pencil, a signaling mirror, whistle, cable saw, bleach, insect repellent, magnifying glass, rope and nylon cord, pulleys, and a pistol and ammunition.

If you’re not already on “team headlamp,” let’s get one thing straight. The headlamp is to an outdoors person as the internet is to shopping. Once you’ve seen firsthand just how easy and effective it is, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it. Headlamps give you light right where your gaze falls, and they leave both hands free to work. Olympia’s Explorer (EX) Series of headlamps has been designed with outdoor junkies in mind: This series gives us lamps with great features that don’t cost a fortune. This tough aluminum body headlamp casts out a scorching 550 lumens, and it’s perfect for chasing down a blood trail after dark, cooking in camp, or working under the hood of your truck. The Cree XM-L LED bulb delivers a beam of light that can reach out 135 meters, and it has five lighting modes, including a distress strobe. It’s even waterproof down to one meter.

From life-saving moments to saving-the-day in their own special way, people have found multi-uses for their favorite multi-tool. Over the years, we’ve received thousands of real people’s stories from across the globe and have come to call them “Tool Tales.”
n Duke relies on knot-tying author J.D. Lenzen’s online tutorials, “Tying It All Together,” on YouTube. Duke suggests starting with the “cobra knot,” called the Solomon Bar at Lenzen’s website, Fusion Knots. It’s the easiest and most popular knot, or weave, for these bracelets. Walchle, the Ticknor brothers and Duke use it, often in multiple colors, which make the weave “pop.”
The wrist straps come in a variety of weaves and colors, all of which can be manufactured to your particular specifications. You can even choose to have an aluminum dog tag woven into the bracelet for ID purposes or just for style. Why would we carry gold? I can understand the importance of silver because it it $20 an ingot and can be used for trade and barter. Gold is a whopping $1,250 a coin, and no one in a SHTF crisis is going to have change for a purchase.

It began more than seven years ago with a broken watchband, which Walchle fixed using paracord. The woven band got him some attention in his hometown of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., so he started making watchbands, then bracelets, and selling them on eBay.
There’s also plenty of cheap, yet high quality survival gear that’s a great price whether or not it’s on sale. If you’re interested, take a look at what we think the best bang-for-buck survival gear products are at the $5, $10, $15, $20, & $25 price points.
Anything with both the words “multi” and “tool” in it is worth having a look at. There are a great many options for multitools – focus on weight and practicality when looking. Are you going to really NEED the one with the allen key and corkscrew? Stick to the basics of a straight blade, saw, and can opener (like this one here) and add what few other options you see fit. Some bonus items that are rarely thought about are a magnifying glass and USB stick. These come on some multitools and can be used to start fires and store important family records, respectively. If you want to learn more about choosing the right multitool for survival, you can check out our article here.
Hunting and fishing may be more trouble than they are worth. You may burn more calories in search of prey than you would gain from eating their flesh. Save yourself from some agony by packing a few snacks.
The bottom line? The Katadyn Micropur tablets cost more and take longer to work, but are widely tolerated in water. Potable Aqua’s iodine tablets are cheaper, last longer, and work faster, but they do taste funny. Take your pick.

Tips: Bring along an extra “stuff sack”, like you’d carry a sleeping bag in, and use it to carry your tarp shelter when it’s time to break camp and move to a new location. Roll up your tarp and then cinch it tight with paracord or rope. Have a few stakes with you to use as ground anchors for your tent.
If your aim is not that great, maybe your patience is. Another way to catch your breakfast in the wilderness is to set up a trap. Use a section of your bracelet for triggers and snare nooses. Furthermore, the inner strands of the strap can be used as the string of a Paiute Deadfall.
To survive a natural or man made event either at home or away. This could be a hurricane, earthquake, tornado damage, a vehicle break down, even just a snowstorm that makes the roads unpassable. In many places, if there’s some bad weather on the way, the grocery stores get cleaned out.
Any clue as to how much this would all weigh, should one have to carry the items on thier backs? This is a fairly large list, and some of the items could be this, OR this, OR this… A few things to add or coment about:
When you’re preparing for a SHTF scenario, the first thing that comes to mind is stockpiling water and food. Getting yourself some food insurance is a basic reflex, acquired in millions of years of evolution….
Whether you’re working around the house, cutting rope for your campsite, splicing electrical wires in the garage, or slicing up vegetables, our small, but effective folding pocket knife will get the job done right.
If you wade through a cold river (rivers are common in many wilderness areas), or find yourself suddenly in the rain and need to get a fire going quickly — get this fire going using a micro torch. You can even cook, right from the torch.

High quality, durable blade. Very convenient and discreet. Fits in any credit card slot. This knife is for when you need to do something in a pinch, not heavy duty work. Very pleased with my purchase!
If you go with tarp, buy yourself three or four measuring 10×12 or a bit larger. With a few tarps you can build yourself a small shelter that is sealed and insect proof, nearly as well as a tent. With some duct tape (to tape tarp edges) or a heavy duty sewing needle and thread you can stitch together a shelter made of tarp in no time.

It may not help in the denser areas of radiation, but as its spreading throughout the country, it will prevent the heaviest symptoms.

What was once used as a practical method to carry supplementary cord by soldiers and firefighters, paracord bracelets are now being used by countless outdoor adventurers. By using different parts of the strap to create improvised equipment for food, shelter, and emergency situations, a 550 cord can be the difference between life and death.

I think survival means different things to different people. Sure, there is basic survival – will you live or die – but once those basic needs are met, survival can become something entirely different. The survival of your mental wellbeing and happiness can mean the difference between “merely surviving” and LIVING. I think we all have our unique and individual purpose in life, which is the element that makes life worth surviving. Once you can pinpoint exactly what the purpose is for you, you’ll know how each and every element of your life (your house, your family, your romantic relationships, your career) honor your highest purpose. I like to call this our “over-arching goal” and it’s our main focus when we design our lives. For example, mine is Happiness Creation. Everything I do in my life supports this goal, and if it doesn’t – I know it’s time for a change. If you need help figuring out what your over-arching goal might be, I’ve written about it more in-depth here: The Science to Designing a Supported & Purposeful Life.
I ordered 8 items on 7/16 & 7/17/15 & waited 21 business days without result (they charged my credit cards & I paid for the goods the day they were ordered). I called on 8/18/15 asking where my orders were. I was advised that had a tracking number (never provided) but that the items were sold out. I asked when they’d be available without result. I demanded a refund which they agreed to provide. To my dismay, however, I discovered I had been charged $19.95 twice .unknowingly. I await the credit to my credit card. I was offended by the practice this firm engages in of unknowingly charging its customers $19.95 per order received without ever disclosing the fact that it will be doing so and without the customer’s knowledge or permission. This is a deceptive, offensive & unethical practice which honest merchants do not engage in. Accordingly, BE WARNED THAT YOU”LL BE CHARGED IMPROPERLY & YOU WILL NOT BE ADVISED OF SUCH CHARGES. OTHER REVIEWS MANIFEST THE FACT THAT THIS IS THIS MERCHANTS REGULAR CONDUCT. BEWARE!!!!!
– Bates Light series are nice, like putting your foot in a baby seal, but if you have high arches, get some good support – they also run narrow… Try on before you buy. – Bates also need very minimal break in time – IF you can afford them, always go with Danner brand combat boots – the USMC RAT boot is the tank of footware, they are pricy (all mine are issued 🙂 ) but well worth the cost.
Let’s face it: This is a survival knife for a worst case scenario and you find yourself living in a lawless land and need a serious knife for self defense. The US Marine KA-BAR is designed for combat — and proven in combat — and carried by many U.S. Marines into past wars. Please note: This isn’t a survival knife for a weekend recreationist; a forest service official or fish and game warden will possibly confiscate it if they know you’re carrying it, so be sure to check local laws before simply packing one into the wilderness on your next backpacking trip. The good news about carrying this for a worst case survival scenario? Not only is it a knife proven in combat but something you can also use to gut big game or filet a squirrel, possum, trout, salmon or any other critter that you’re willing to eat to survive. (If this KA-BAR is a bit too military for your tastes go with a good folding knife like this Kershaw as a more civilian option and one you might buy for your teen kids as well.)

Many generators can be bought to run on Diesel, and LPG, and Propane. While others have yet other flex fuel capabilities. Do your Research. The brand and its capabilities. The typical generator package has a motor, a generator and an electrical panel. The motor can be gas. It can be Diesel… steam etc. The generator part is nearly an electrical that is motor spun. Forgetting the electrical mumbo jumbo and setting it aside. The generator part is not really a high tech part. That said, it is better to get a generator that is designed for just that purpose. (Unless you are an Electrical Engineer of note do not DIY this) The electrical sensors and panel, and parts are where the electrical design engineer gets his say. And earns his pay… or not?
These are often overlooked but are highly versatile. In addition to its intended use, a sanitary pad can be used as a bandage, it can be shredded and used as tinder, and it can be used to filter sediment from water.
If you’re ever in a life-and-death survival situation, then securing a source of food is going to be one of your top priorities. You can hunt, sure, and you can gather berries (provided you know how to gather actual edible berries), but nothing is going to keep you going quite like trapping an animal. For that purpose, you can use a paracord snare trap. The trap is easy to learn and as low-budget as low-budget gets, yet it’s surprisingly effective.

The day I quit I went through the company shaking hands and saying good-bye to all 30 of my colleagues letting them know why I resigned. Then I walked four blocks up Fifth Avenue and started my new, even more inspiring job.
Each day I practiced what Rumi suggested. learned how to ‘welcome and entertain’ my managers’ rudeness. I treated her ‘honorably’ with respect in our meetings; all the ‘sorrows’… the insults, rules and meanness she aimed at me I was able to endure because I knew in my heart I was a success and not a failure. The picture of some ‘new delight’ waiting for me in my next job kept me focused and strong.
However I think that the question you wished to ask was what is the purpose of OUR life. We had one such kind of discussion in our classroom. Many of us had different opinions and perspectives and each one was trying to prove his/ her own most logical. Some said that life had no particular purpose, others said that it is just a cycle of nature- living and dying so on and so forth.

In survival and SHTF situations, you’ll want to make sure to defend yourself and your family against both other people and animals. There are a variety of ways which you can do this, although of course some work better than others. Certainly look into attaining a firearm if this is legally permissible in your locality, and if you ever consider you may like to have it as a backup option. If you are interested in firearms, make sure to learn about them and train with them prior to an emergency situation. You can’t expect to be good with a firearm your first time shooting.

NOTE — A micro torch relies on fuel; when your fuel runs out, you have no more flame. You need back-up fuel (butane in this case) if you want several month’s use in an extended survival situation. One thing to note: A canister of butane is cheap and just one can go a long ways and is also easy to use). Consider both back-up butane and even a back up torch in case of rare equipment failure (or to even use as a bartering item; there’s a good chance someone else is going to want one after they see how easy it is to start a fire).

I can’t afford a personal locator beacon. I had to settle for a lifejacket strobe light that can be seen even in the daylight. It runs on 2 AA rechargeable batteries. Amazon has several different kinds available.
I recieved the very first order I placed there, which was a less than $3 transaction for the Hybeam Micro and I had it within 2 weeks. I’ve also ordered the Hybeam Mini, Hybeam Poplamp, Hoffman Richter Reaper, and ordered them all within 3 days of September the 25th, 26th, and 27th. It doesn’t even have to be extreme cold, but if you carry them on your body or put them next to your body for a short period of time they will warm enough to be quite usable. Walmart carries a brand than I can’t think of the name of at the moment, looks almost identical to a bic, is every bit as reliable as one but cost half the price of less. Stay away from scripto and those like it.
These are absolutely excellent points about different ways of generating energy and how important storing the energy you have is! I actually think you put it wonderfully. You’re 110% correct, having all your eggs in one basket is never as good as having multiple forms of energy. Always great to have 2 or 3 backups, certainly. And storing generated energy is obviously equally as important as generating it.
I don’t think Ryan bought Survival Life. Not from what I’ve read anyway. Sure, you could cook up your pot of survival stew over the campfire like a caveman, but come on folks. We’ve put people into space! Don’t you think it’s time we use space-age technology to make outdoor cooking easier? Jetboil is the Cadillac of camp stoves. It’s super quick to boil, lightweight, and very well engineered. The blended fuel can burn well, even in extreme cold, and the best part is, this stove is very thrifty with fuel use. You may be able to cook dozens of meals on the smallest size of fuel canister. These stoves are very efficient, easy to operate, and clean. The gear even nests for compact storage.

Thank you for this, it’s great. We’re going to be putting together a first aid/medical kit list sometime in the future, and I’ll definitely take that first list into account when we get around to posting that. It’ll be really helpful.
Since age, disease, bad roads, steep hikes and bad habits have pretty much ravaged my body over the years, I perked up when I learned that the bracelet could make me feel better. However, I’m partial toward western medicine and scientific evidence, so I was skeptical of the miraculous claims. I made phone calls: to Sacramento, to Buffalo, to Phoenix, to Florida. The more phone calls I made to find out how these bracelets are supposed to work, the less I knew.

Laser pointer for signaling aircraft (red is color of distress, but green color is higher power and will be seen farther), with lithium cells, in double waterproof plastic pouch (pointers of high power are a theoretical hazard to eyes of low-flying pilots at night)
One of the things a person will learn in U.S. Special Forces survival training is that squirrels, rabbits, and other small mammals can make a quick meal. In the wilderness, all you need to know is how to read the ground around you and recognize areas that small mammals are likely to travel. Then set up a number of small, simple traps around the area (dead falls, snares, etc) and simply wait for traps to spring.

Medical emergencies are an even bigger deal than being lost. Your kit should contain items to deal with serious injuries — not just cuts and scrapes. Pack some Quick Clot or Celox to deal with serious bleeding, tweezers, a needle and thread, antibiotic cream, a bit of sunblock, and any special medications that you may need.
A commercial option for people who choose to take the minimalist route is the Pocket Survival Pak from Survive Outdoors Longer (SOL). This gift is one that my husband has purchased for co-workers or others on several occasions, and it is always appreciated. The knife really is sharp.. It is super convenient to be able to pull out a knife from your wallet whenever you need. We’ve used it while organizing the garage, opening packages, and a variety of other activities. The knife fits in your wallet as is the size of a credit card. It isn’t bulky. My husband has owned his for two years and still finds it sharp and useful. I am sure we will give this gift again in the future.
I was out on a dive trip, and my watchband was about to break. I dug out some paracord out of my dive box and tied the watch to my wrist. I made the first watch band and fastened it with a marine-grade stainless steel shackle, and then people started commenting on it. It hit me that it was a neat application, and I had actually read an article about how Navy Seals used to stow paracord on themselves during battles in Vietnam, so that’s how we started marketing it as survival gear.
It does what it’s supposed to…no more and no less. It’s an emergency knife that can be carried discreetly in your wallet until you need it. It seems sharp enough and once the handle is folded stays in place so you don’t have to worry about cutting yourself. It’s not heavy-duty and not as easy as a regular pocket knife, but it’ll do well enough in a pinch.
Astronauts are provided with survival kits due to the difficulty of predicting where a spacecraft will land on its return to earth, especially in the case of an equipment failure. In early US space flights, the kit was optimised for survival at sea; the one provided for John Glenn on the first American space flight in Friendship 7 contained “a life raft, pocket knife, signaling mirror, shark repellent, seawater desalting tablets, sunscreen, soap, first aid kit, and other items”.[5] A survival kit was provided for the Apollo program which was “…designed to provide a 48-hour postlanding (water or land) survival capability for three crewmen between 40 degrees North and South latitudes”.[6] It contained “a survival radio, a survival light assembly, desalter kits, a machete, sunglasses, water cans, sun lotion, a blanket, a pocket knife, netting and foam pads”.[7]
Ah – I must’ve missed that part, my apologies. 1 million in SALES is definitely viable, if they are selling/promoting expensive products. Though still to my point, if you are using this website as a proof of concept for your marketing business – as they are – they should be transparent and disclose what operating costs were.

For the amount this costs, it’s almost a crime to go up the hills without one. The thing lasts for 12,000 strikes, is approved by the International Survival Instructors Association, and let’s face it, is just pure genius. A must-have for any adventurer.
If you’re struggling with the whole authority versus niche thing, this post on EmpireFlippers examines both and their pro’s and con’s and there’s a good video from Jill and Josh of ScrewTheNineToFive worth watching.
The transportation items may include bicycles with off-road tires and suspension, emergency tools and spare auto parts (e.g., fuses, fan belts, light bulbs, head light, tire pump, etc.), and an inflatable raft with paddles.
But you shouldn’t put this intel advantage in the hands of electricity or battery technology. Instead, get a hand crank radio so you can generate your own power on demand. Crank for a few minutes, and you’ll be able to tune into any available intel being broadcast over the radio waves.
More Than Just Surviving is a survival blog that concentrates on wilderness survival, preparedness, and gear. Run by a two-person husband and wife team, Thomas & Elise Xavier, this blog’s mission is to offer a down to earth resource for both survivalists and preppers alike.
A multi-tool shouldn’t be viewed as a knife with a bunch of other stuff attached. In fact, if you’re really after a survival knife, you should get one separate to a multi-tool, a straight-edged, fixed knife which is far more reliable in crucial situations than one designed to fold away.
Whether it’s hikes in the woods, long drives, or strolling downtown D.C., It goes everywhere with me. The quality of every item including the case is simply outstanding and I would highly recommend this purchase to anyone.
On firemaking you covered several useful items. Here’s an idea on the magnifying glass… ever see those older model, big screen, rear projection TVs on the side of the road, at the dump, or in the “free” or “curb alert” ads? Excellent source of compact, VERY powerful magnifying glasses. There’s three in each one. Scrap the screen, find the housings in the bottom, pull them out and crack them open. The housings are tubular and designed like camera lenses with multiple plastic lenses near the ends, but in the middle there lies a high quality glass lens. Not the most durable as they scratch fairly easily, but they’ll start a fire even with pretty extensive scratches. I made some felt lined leather cases for mine, but simply kept them wrapped in a swatch of old flannel shirt and secured with a hairband until I made the cases.
The events of September 11th, Hurricane Katrina and the devastating Tsunami in Indonesia and surrounding areas have affected us all physically, emotionally and spiritually. Therefore, preparation for all types of disasters MUST be a fact of life. Why leave it up to fate and take the chance that you and your loved ones suffer needlessly during and after a disaster?
A bit of a luxury item in a survival scenario but drinking water out of your hands is not convenient. Plus, if you happen to have coffee, soup, or freeze-dried meals you’ll need a bowl or cup to eat these meals.
Sure, if survival was the sole purpose of life, why would nature evolve intelligent life forms. Bacteria or algae or other such primitive life forms survive just fine. I think that  intelligent beings have more chances of surviving against the unpredictable changes in nature unlike primitive life forms which are specifically adapted to a particular environment.
Keeping your food, perishables, and other valuables off the ground isn’t just a sure way to ensure their safety, but it will help stave off moisture and insects as well. Find a solid branch that can bear the weight of your supplies and then rig a simple paracord knot (in a bind, even a shoe-tie knot will suffice). Tie the paracord around your bag, cooler, or storage kit—don’t be afraid to tie it more than once to ensure security—and voila! You now have a method of keeping your food away from the animals. When you need to move, simply untie the paracord, pack it up again, and move along.

If your aim is not that great, maybe your patience is. Another way to catch your breakfast in the wilderness is to set up a trap. Use a section of your bracelet for triggers and snare nooses. Furthermore, the inner strands of the strap can be used as the string of a Paiute Deadfall.
When you’re preparing for SHTF scenario, the first thing that comes to mind is stockpiling water and food. Getting yourself some food insurance is a basic reflex, acquired in millions of years of evolution….

We’ve discussed survival firearms many times on this site (survival guns/survival rifles). And while there is no such thing as one single “best” survival gun, there’s a lot to think about and consider.

Surprisingly she became ‘a guide’ for me because she showed me how I didn’t want to be – a cold and unkind human being. I was grateful to her for this and even found some compassion and understanding for her.

There are two or three things I can tell you about the Survival Strap bracelets that are absolutely true from my perspective. First, they look good. They’re available in 50,000 customizable color combinations. Second, the stainless steel shackle is difficult to close. And third, I’ve been wearing it for almost a week and I’m sleeping a little longer every night. Well, I slept a little better for a few nights but now I’m back to my normal pattern of a few hours here or there.
The second we got an air gun, Thomas immediately figured it would be absolutely perfect for a SHTF scenario. You could score some small game fairly easily, even in the city. There’s always squirrels and birds, and sometimes even rabbits to be had.
The study of how people control one another in order to gain indirect control over things is called politics. The study of how people make use of the control over things to indirectly control other people is called economics. American psychologist Abraham Maslow says that there are seven levels of human need, namely, (1) food, water, (2) safety, (3) belongingness, love, (4) esteem, (5) curiosity, (6) beauty, symmetry, and (7) self-actualization. Only after man’s lower level of needs have been satisfied, will he recognize the need at the next higher level. Maslow believes that the highest desire of man is to “self-actualize”. In my opinion, though, the meaning of self-actualization is not clear enough. Instead, I believe that  the ultimate goal for human existence is to control everything that exists, meaning the entire universe. Things will become “beautiful” after they are controlled. For example, people think that today’s life is more beautiful than yesterday’s because they have greater control over life today than they had yesterday. Otherwise, they would not say so. Curiosity is only a means to achieve the end, that is, control. One has to understand a thing before controlling it. Only when the structure of atom is understood can atomic power be controlled. As a result of the natural course of evolution, human beings have only two eyes and ten fingers. By the same token, the human desire to control and be curious is the result of evolution that has been going on for millions of years. Those ape-men that lacked the desire to know and control had died out long time ago. The so-called esteem in real terms is the desire to do well in everything and outperform others. People compete and compare with one another to see who can control more. This is the primary motivation force behind human social development. Social animals are “social” and live together because they are linked by a common force. The force that links the Earth and the Moon is called gravity, and the force that links social animals together is belongingness and love, an inherited instinct of social animals. Adults do not have to teach kids to make friends with other kids because it is in their instinct. Without friends, people will feel lonely. Among social animals, there is mutual attraction (belongingness and love) as well as repelling force (hatred) in competition for control. In other words, people co-operate and compete with one another. Co-operation increases the chance of survival for people as a group while competition and selfishness increase the chance of survival for individuals. Both forces are necessary and are results of the natural course of evolution over the years. Sometimes, though, competition can also increase the chance of survival for a group. A typical example would be two male deer competing for a herd of female deer. In the end, only the stronger male deer has the chance of mating therefore their offspring will have a better chance of survival.

In a situation where there is a moderate to severe societal collapse, such as extensive civil unrest or major natural disaster (Katrina situation maybe?), and you have to scavenge for supplies, possibly with lesser regard to law; look at the billboards! Many of them are topped with solar panels about 3’X3′. And you’ll KNOW they also have the wiring and battery packs on board.
Tip: Also purchase roadside flares and keep on hand for an emergency calling for a fast fire. Flame-producing hand held roadside flares like Orion Safety Flares are different than the ones above and not fired from a gun. Carry these in your vehicle and take a couple on your next hiking trip packed safely in a waterproof container — these can be used to start a fire in wet conditions also, with very little work.
I read once where a water tower was used to store water. Alas, this homeowner was thinking out of the box. The location was very remote. And being frail he dreaded trying to carry heavy deep cycle batteries.
People use our straps for all different kinds of things. We’re about helping people, and we especially like to support our armed forces. So far, we’ve donated about $445,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project, and our goal is to get to $1 million by Christmas time. Our customers buy our care packages and send them overseas, and we usually match their donation so that all the guys in the unit can be outfitted with a Survival Strap. Overall, about 10 percent of our net is donated. We started the replacement program, because we would get letters from customers telling us that they were in a situation where they could have used their strap, but they loved it too much to destroy it, so we started the initiative that if you send us your story, we’ll send a new Survival Strap for free.
As soon as the sun sets, getting a fire going is very important whether you have something for dinner or not. Aside from keeping you warm, fire can be the only thing standing between you and a starving predator.
